Black bear kills Utah boy

Associated Press

June 18, 2007 at 6:57 PM EDT

AMERICAN FORK, Utah ? An 11-year-old boy was dragged screaming from his family's tent and killed by a black bear during a Father's Day outing in the Utah wilderness.

The boy, his mother, stepfather and a 6-year-old brother were sleeping in a large tent Sunday night in American Fork Canyon, about 50 kilometres southeast of Salt Lake City, when the stepfather heard a scream.

The boy and his sleeping bag were gone. His body was found about 350 metres away, said Lt. Dennis Harris of the Utah County sheriff's office. His identity was not released.

Authorities said the bear, a male possibly 120 kilos, probably was the same one that was snooping around a different tent in the same area before dawn Sunday.

Wildlife officers shot a black bear Monday and flew its remains out of the Wasatch Mountains for tests to confirm that it was responsible for the fatal mauling. The officers used 26 dogs to track the bear's scent, shooting and wounding him. The creature wandered around wounded until officers shot and killed him several hours later, said Lt. Scott White of the state wildlife agency.

Authorities said the death was Utah's first fatal attack on a human by a black bear. It follows reports of several bear sightings during spring and occurred just hours after other people in the same primitive campsite likely encountered the same animal.

I was disgusted about the boy being eaten, but the real horror of the story was the bear being wounded then walking around for several hours. Truth be told, we venture further and further into these wild animal's territory and then expect not to be attacked... I wouldn't be surprised if they had food of some sort in their tent and didn't know the proper way to prepare for wilderness camping.

Still feel bad for the family - it's horrible, just saying...

I always want a clean kill too, but that bear needed to be killed. I don't know how you can compare the absolute tragedy of a a boy being dragged away alive and screaming from his family and subsequently eaten to a bear that's alive with a gsw?

I do agree with your stance though that when you're in the domain of a wild animal, you can get hurt.

It holds 14 and I always have more. and 20rounds from a .45 would demolish a bear !!

Considering you would be shaking like a leaf, and would likely miss with 3 of the 14, you would hit this 265 lb bear with 11 shots from your .45. That is NOT going to demolish him.

You would be bear food....:nono:

I agree the bear needed to be killed, but now the bear is stumbling around for hours alive and screaming...maybe he had a family too?

Don't get me wrong - it is horrific for the family and the boy, but I'm sure animals feel pain and have feelings for one another as well. That's all.

It is my unfortunate fate perhaps to sympathize with animals on a very deep level. Although again I have no problem with hunters like yourself...I just could never be one.

Overall, just a sad story...

Why did the bear need to be killed? Just to see if he was the one that ate the boy?

Do we hunt down every shark that bites a human? Leave the fukcing bears alone and maybe they wont eat you! Go out in the middle of the forest and camp and then kill the bear?

If a bear killed my son I would devote the rest of my life bear hunting !!! They probably figured if the bear killed one person it would keep hunting humans.

Bears don't normally drag kids out of their tents. Maybe he was sick? Do you want him killing another kid? That's why. Can children help it if their parents are idiots? They are innocent here and don't deserve a fate such as this.

Hippo, be thankful you didn't see a thread jack posted yesterday that traumatized a few of us. Not sure you would have recovered. I think it messed him up to. Most disturbing thing i have witnessed on the net just yet. I know i still think about it and i only watched about 40 seconds of it.
