I don't follow baseball as closely as foots or hoops, so I really don't know. However, I remember watching ESPN a few weeks before the season started and one of the analysts, I don't remember which one, said the Nats would not only be the worst team in baseball but they would be one of the worst teams of the last 15-20 years. I know these "experts" are full of crap 99% of the time but I'm beginning to wonder if he was on to something.

Looking at their roster the only pitcher I like is Patterson. Maybe they have some good young guys that I'm not familiar with, but I think pitching will be a problem area for them. Furthermore, their lineup doesn't exactly scare you. Guys like Kearns and Zimmerman are alright but they don't have a good top to bottom lineup. Defensively I don't really know how they will fare, but having Young at 1B should prove to be an adventure.

One thing I will say on their behalf is that they absolutely raped the M's in the Vidro/Snelling deal. When he's healthy Snelling is one of the best young hitters in baseball. Vidro's best years are long behind him in my opinion.

So long story long... what are your guys' thoughts on this team? Are they better than they appear to be? Will they be good fade material this year?

They will be 200+ dogs soon unless Patterson is starting.

They are by far the worse team in baseball, usually Frank Robinson would be able to keep them competitive not sure Manny Acta can do it.

It s a little too early to call them the worst in baseball. They will not be good, however there are still some other teams that will be in the running for that title. The thing that the Nats do have is money and plenty of it and if they start spending they will be ahead of some of these other clubs...but yoru right they have a lot to improve on....

I went under 75 1/2 last yr. on them and won and
went under 68 again this yr. We shall see, they
aren't as bad as the Tigers 5 yrs ago who looked like they might not win 42 games at one point, and look how they turned it around in 4-5 yrs.

Scoop what teams are even remotely close to being this bad?
Florida, Tampa, KC.

I honestly can not think of any team that is close to this bad. Outside of Patterson you basically have four unknown starters.

Always Look on the Bright Side of Life: Official theme song of the 2007 Washington Nationals

It's only the second game of the 2007 season, but the Nationals announcers have already fully embraced the fact that they will be calling the games of the worst team in baseball. As evidenced by their Silver Lining Style of gamecalling. A few gems from today's broadcast:

You can't even tell the difference between his fastball and his change-up!

Translation: He has zero life on his fastball. The speed on his fastball is so slow that the difference between it and the change-up is not apparent. This is well demonstrated by the five runs the Marlins put up in the first two innnings.

Dmitri Young hit over .300 for four straight years. He just knows how to hit.

Translation: He hasn't been a productive or healthy hitter for years. No one really wanted him, which is why he ended up on the Nationals. The last time he hit .300 was six years ago.

Yesterday, Dontrelle Willis did it. And today Scott Olsen is showing his ability to get men out. These young Marlins starters are showing veteran savvy.

Translation: Can we hit anyone? Who the hell are we trotting out there every night? Kory Casto is hitting second in the second game of the year. Who the hell is this guy? I've never heard of him and I'm calling the damn games for the team. Brian Schneider is batting sixth. You know who the Yankees have batting sixth? Hideki Matsui. We have the catcher who walloped four home runs last season.

This is a team who runs promotions for its "star players" between innings. The second most frequent one I've seen is for Jon Rauch. 18 holds! He had 18 holds last season. All bow at the altar of Rauch and his incredible ability to get a couple of guys out without the game on the line.

:mj07: :mj07: :mj07: The only question I have is if Dmitri Young hasn't hit .300 for 6 years, how on earth did he not get scooped up by the M's? Those kind of numbers should warrant a 4 year, 56 million dollar deal to Bill Bavasi. :142smilie

Florida? The Nats wish they were in the same class as the Marlins! Yes, Washington is the worst team in baseball. Zimmerman is a great player, but you can have the rest of them. I predict Washington will lose at least 125 games.

i totally agree, they're awful, they "may have some good players you haven't heard of" but that doesn't win games. they'll lose 105+

I should clarify my post when I said the Nats are not the worst team in baseball. They do have that tag, but what I meant was it is too early to deem any team in baseball the worst team just based off two games.

I firmly believe other teams can be just as bad...:)
