NBC Severs Ties With Journalist Arnett

By DAVID BAUDER, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK - NBC fired journalist Peter Arnett on Monday, saying it was wrong for him to give an interview with state-run Iraqi TV in which he said the American-led coalition's initial plan for the war had failed because of Iraq (news - web sites)'s resistance. Arnett called the interview a "misjudgment" and apologized.

Arnett, on NBC's "Today" show on Monday, said he was sorry for his statement but added "I said over the weekend what we all know about the war."

"I want to apologize to the American people for clearly making a misjudgment," the New Zealand-born Arnett said. He said he would try to leave Baghdad now, joking "there's a small island in the South Pacific that I've inhabited that I'll try to swim to."

NBC defended him Sunday, saying he had given the interview as a professional courtesy and that his remarks were analytical in nature. But by Monday morning the network switched course and, after Arnett spoke with NBC News President Neal Shapiro, said it would no longer work with Arnett.

"It was wrong for Mr. Arnett to grant an interview to state-controlled Iraqi TV, especially at a time of war," NBC spokeswoman Allison Gollust said. "And it was wrong for him to discuss his personal observations and opinions in that interview."

Arnett, who won a Pulitzer Prize reporting in Vietnam for The Associated Press, gained much of his prominence from covering the 1991 Gulf War (news - web sites) for CNN. One of the few American television reporters left in Baghdad, his reports were frequently aired on NBC and its cable sisters, MSNBC and CNBC.

Leaving a second network under a cloud may mark the end of his TV career. Arnett was the on-air reporter of the 1998 CNN report that accused American forces of using sarin nerve gas on a Laotian village in 1970 to kill U.S. defectors. Two CNN employees were sacked and Arnett was reprimanded over the report, which the station later retracted. Arnett left the network when his contract was not renewed.

In the Iraqi TV interview, broadcast Sunday by Iraq's satellite television station and monitored by The Associated Press in Egypt, Arnett said his Iraqi friends tell him there is a growing sense of nationalism and resistance to what the United States and Britain are doing.

He said the United States is reappraising the battlefield and delaying the war, maybe for a week, "and rewriting the war plan. The first war plan has failed because of Iraqi resistance. Now they are trying to write another war plan."

"Clearly, the American war plans misjudged the determination of the Iraqi forces," Arnett said.

Arnett said it is clear that within the United States there is growing opposition to the war and a growing challenge to President Bush (news - web sites) about the war's conduct.

"Our reports about civilian casualties here, about the resistance of the Iraqi forces, are going back to the United States," he said. "It helps those who oppose the war when you challenge the policy to develop their arguments."

At a briefing Sunday in Qatar, Gen. Tommy Franks ticked off major achievements of the war campaign, including the advance of troops to within 60 miles of Baghdad. But he found himself answering questions about whether he had enough troops to do the job and denying that coalition forces were stalled.

A Republican congresswoman, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, told Fox News Channel on Sunday that Arnett's remarks were "Kafkaesque" and "just crazy."

"Let's hope that he's being coerced," Ros-Lehtinen said.

The first Bush administration was unhappy with Arnett's reporting on the Gulf War in 1991 for CNN, suggesting he had become a conveyor of propaganda. ARnett was denounced for reporting that the allies had bombed a baby milk factory in Baghdad when the military said it was a biological weapons plant.

Arnett went to Iraq this year not as an NBC News reporter but as an employee of the MSNBC show "National Geographic (news - web sites) Explorer." When other NBC reporters left Baghdad for safety reasons, the network began airing his reports. NBC said Monday he wouldn't be reporting for "National Geographic Explorer," either.

The Iraqi TV interview was broadcast in English and translated by a uniformed Iraqi anchor. NBC said Arnett gave the interview when asked shortly after he attended an Iraqi government briefing.

In the April 5 issue of TV Guide, Arnett said he felt he had found redemption reporting on the current war.

"I was furious with (CNN founder) Ted Turner and (then-CNN chairman) Tom Johnson when they threw me to the wolves after I made them billions risking my life to cover the first Gulf War," Arnett told TV Guide.

"Now (Turner and Johnson) are gone, the Iraqis have thrown the CNN crew out of Baghdad, and I'm still here," he said. "Any satisfaction in that? Ha, ha, ha, ha."

He said the Iraqis allowed him to stay in Baghdad because they respect him and "see me as a fellow warrior.

He said the United States is reappraising the battlefield and delaying the war, maybe for a week, "and rewriting the war plan. The first war plan has failed because of Iraqi resistance. Now they are trying to write another war plan."

True. Sentiments echoed by Gen. Wallace.

"Clearly, the American war plans misjudged the determination of the Iraqi forces," Arnett said.

True. Again, see EVERYTHING Rumsfeld said leading up to this war, and Wallace's recent remarks.

Arnett said it is clear that within the United States there is growing opposition to the war and a growing challenge to President Bush (news - web sites) about the war's conduct.

Not so true, I'd say. Still, there's no quoted material here, so we're getting this reporter's opinions.

"Our reports about civilian casualties here, about the resistance of the Iraqi forces, are going back to the United States," he said. "It helps those who oppose the war when you challenge the policy to develop their arguments."

True.

But, f.uck it, right boys? Let's fry his f.uckin' ass for treason. He's obviously trying to overthrow the American Government by stating true facts.

Oh yeah, but you Iraqi citizens who we're bringing freedom to. . . you won't be tried for treason if you speak out against your government or military. No, we're bringing you the freedom to question your government. You'll have freedom of the press even if we crucify our members of the press for saying what they want. You'll be fine though.

Hey like I said in other thread. Just make it fair. Fox should get rid of the liar Oli North. And CBS the old over the hill Rather. Talking about Fox you should have heard the blone this moring makeing like she knows something about war. I very very seldom say things like this. But she is one dumb bitch. The two guys at least have either been informed better. Or are smart enough to becarefull what they say.

Get your head out of your :moon: Shrimp:::

He made those "TRUE" comments to the ENEMY under no coercion, KNOWINGLY to be used by the enemy for propaganda , that IS TREASON::

He should've shut his YAP and ASKED Questions , not give his uninformed assessment of the WAR to the ENEMY, he is holed up in a hotel room yet HE KNOWS that the US Military is REWRITING the War Plan etc etc....:: He doesn't know Jack-Shit::

"The enemy we're fighting is different from the enemy we war-gamed against because of these paramilitary forces. We knew they were here, but we did not know how they would fight," (Lt. General) Wallace said during a visit Thursday to a command post of the 101st Airborne.

Did that mean the war would run longer than expected? "It's beginning to look that way," he said.

In other words, exactly what Arnett said.

So, why not fry his ass for treason too? Looks like Arnett was just about as informed as this guy was.

A Lt. Gen making these comments is so much more destructive than some reporter making them. So, what do we do? Fry him for treason, too?

I bet the Iraqis are hoping they are liberated so that they can speak their mind just like Arnett.

Peter Arnett, appeared on Iraqi television to state that (a) the original coalition war plan has failed due, I guess, to the brilliance of the Iraqi fighters, and, (b) that Iraq is treating journalists graciously. Note, please, that several journalists have been killed, all American cable and network journalists have been kicked out of Baghdad, and two Israeli and one Portuguese journalist are now being held by Saddam?s goons. One detained journalist is reported to have been beaten.

Arnett also brags that his reports about Iraqi resistance and civilian casualties in Baghdad are helping to encourage the anti-war movement in America. Arnett told the Iraqis "Our reports about civilian casualties here, about the resistance of the Iraqi forces, are going back to the United States. It helps those who oppose the war when you challenge the policy to develop their arguments." We know that Saddam's game plan is to kill the American will to fight. To destroy our will through stories about civilian causalities and American war dead. It sounds to me like Peter Arnett is actually bragging about his success in helping Saddam with his game plan.

Arnett has somewhat of a history for this type of thing. He was the one who announced that the allies had bombed a "baby milk factory" in Gulf War I. He was also the on-air reporter in a 1998 CNN report that accused American forces of using sarin gas in Laos during the Vietnam war in an attempt to kill American defectors. That report was later retracted by CNN. Following that incident Arnett found employment elsewhere.

Amazing. Peter Arnett was working for National Geographic Magazine in Iraq to do some reports for MSNBC. When NBC correspondents got the boot Arnett stepped in. It's easy to see why he hasn't been kicked out of Iraq with the rest of the network and cable reporters. After all ... he's doing a great job! For them!

At last report NBC has cut ties with Arnett. What a shame.

Peter Arnett, Jane Fonda with a really bad comb-over.

First off::Wallace did not say the Militarys "first war plan has FAILED and the Plan has FAILED due to IRAQI RESISTANCE" in a State Run ENEMY INTERVIEW thereby producing a picture that promotes more resistance:::

Nobody can predict any guerrilla TACTICS, that's WHY they ARE called Guerrilla TACTICS::

Who the hell honestly thinks anybody can PREDICT any WAR Play by Play, they try and simulate but until game time Practice is still only practice:::

Hell we get 10-15 killed during a 9 day Deer hunting season for God sake, and they wear Blaze Orange and are NOT trying to KILL each other:::

Nice APOLOGY ARNETT::Just trying to save your Career and:moon:

We will killed about 45000 on our roads this year. Not sure if that makes it ok to kill some more in Iraq or not. But ever life has meaning.

The war will be delayed for a week?????

are you kidding me????

looks to me like the war effort is alive and well!!!!

We have Baghdad surrounded after 11 days.....and yes Iraqi's ARE welcoming our troops -- at least those who are FREE to do so...

The "Elite" Republican guard is turning out to be a joke....WE control the airspace, airports, highways and byways, etc. of Iraq ALL IN A LITTLE OVER A WEEK!!!!!....the only tactic these peopel have is deceptive homicide missions...which we are going to adapt to and now shoot first....

the only thing these homicide/terrorist things do will be to cause innocent civilian casualities as we will now have to fire upon any suspicious looking car/person....

Saddam Hussein has ignored the rules of war which are based upon protecting civilians....now that he has ignored them, he will inflict even more punishment upon his people....yet another reason we need to get this animal and his cronies out of power

seems to me like we are running a very quick war.....i think a month to take over a country or so is very very quick....dont know if there is precedent for a quicker war.....we are winning and the liberal press is doing everything it can to report otherwise....then Arnett goes over there and directly give Hussein more resolve....

one thing about "freedom".....last i checked you can't aid and abet the enemy which is exactly what Mr. Hanssen did with the Ruskies and is what Arnett did with the Iraqi's.....now it is time for both of them to pay the piper......we do not tolerate Benedict Arnold and your freedom DOES NOT extend to the point where it starts to take American lives.....and clearly that is what Arnett has done

I agree as to the war it's going good. I do believe thou many in pentagon even thought it might go better. Remember after just 4/5 days we were only 90 miles away from baghdad. Had no choice but to hold up for supplies and secure that supply route. that took a few days. That and there was way more trouble with Basrah then expected. Still is. Now we almost deplete all our cruise missles. That is surprising to me. Have to be firing more then first thoguht needed. So when I see how fast we went in first 4/5 days. Puts my perdiction of Baghdad all ours in 20 days in trouble. I got 5 bucks rideing on that so time to get going.
By the way are we not in the twelve day. By bud said I only have 8 days left for Saddam to lose power. Either Die or leave.

Do think some of you guys are going a bit too far here, but thought you might be interested in this (The Daily Mirror is Britains biggest/2nd biggest? Tabloid paper and is left-wing)
"
HOME OF THE FREE: ARNETT JOINS MIRROR Apr 1 2003

THE reporter sacked by American TV for telling the truth about the war is joining the Daily Mirror.

Veteran newsman Peter Arnett was axed by NBC yesterday accused of being a Saddam stooge. He told state-run Iraqi TV the conflict was not going to plan because of fierce resistance and said his Baghdad reports "help those who oppose war".

He joins the Mirror on the day it was revealed that 8,700 bombs have rained down on Iraq in 12 days, including 3,000 missiles over the weekend.

After his sacking, Pulitzer Prize winner Arnett said: "I report the truth of what is happening here in Baghdad and will not apologise for it. I have always admired your newspaper and am proud to be working for it."

The New Zealand-born journalist was vilified across the US for an interview in which he said: "The first war plan has failed because of Iraqi resistance. Now they are trying to write another war plan. Clearly, thewar planners misjudged the determination of the Iraqi forces. In my TV commentaries I'd tell the Americans about the Iraqi forces and their willingness to fight.

"President Bush says he is concerned about the Iraqi people. But if Iraqi people are dying in numbers, then American policy will be challenged very strongly."

Arnett, 68, added that there was growing opposition about the conduct of the war.

He said: "Our reports about civilian casualties here, about the resistance of the Iraqi forces, are going back to the US. It helps those who oppose the war when you challenge the policy."

On Sunday, NBC praised the reporter for risking his life to deliver news from Baghdad.

The station said of the Iraqi TV interview: "He answered their questions out of professional courtesy. He saw it as purely analysis."

But the furious White House said Arnett spoke from "a point of complete ignorance".

They day after backing him, NBC cut him loose.

Yesterday Arnett said on NBC: "I want to apologise to the American people. It was clearly a misjudgment talking to Iraqi TV.

"I'm not anti-war. I said what we all know about this war. But I've created a firestorm and for that I'm sorry."

Asked about his future, he joked: "There's a small island in the South Pacific I'll try to swim to. I'll leave."

Arnett was one of the few TV journalists in Baghdad. He said: "The Iraqis let me stay because they see me as a fellow warrior. They know I might not agree with them. But I've got their respect."

The reporter, the first Western journalist to interview Osama bin Laden and the last to interview Saddam Hussein, was accused of peddling pro-Iraqi propaganda while covering the 1991 Gulf War.

But he gained much of his prominence for reporting the last conflict with Iraq for CNN.

His Pulitzer Prize came for reporting in Vietnam in 1966 for the Associated Press."

...lights blue touch paper + stands back....
