Bring on the Madness: West Coast Conference

By Brian Gabrielle

The 17th annual West Coast College Basketball Conference Tournament tips off at The Jenny Craig Pavilion in beautiful San Diego, California late Friday night. ESPN will pick up the event beginning with the semi-final round this Sunday. The winner advances to the NCAA's.

What'll be interesting here is if anybody can knock off the 4 time defending champion Gonzaga Bulldogs. John Stockton's old school is once again an overwhelming favorite in this event and there will be many bubble teams rooting for the Zags to capture their 5th straight and not force the selection committee to "waste" an at large bid on this conference. The Zags have won 10 straight conference tourney games and 4 straight titles but will have to do so this season without the services of Dan Dickau.

The number one seed has only won this event twice in the last 11 years, so the West Coast is no stranger to upsets - weird considering the top 2 seeds advance all the way to the semi's automatically.

Gonzaga won this tournament 3 times as an underdog and will be attempting to win it as chalk now two years in a row.

They've played in the final game 7 times in the last 8 years.

GONZAGA ML anyone....???

Bring on the Madness: Colonial Conference

By Brian Gabrielle

The 21st annual Colonial Conference Tournament tips off at 12:00 noon EST at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Virginia. Comcast will cover the event with ESPN2 broadcasting the championship game on Monday March 10. The winner advances to the NCAA's.

Both of last seasons finalists will get a first round bye as UNC-Wilmington and Virginia Commonwealth finished 1-2 and won't take the court until Saturday. First round byes in this event are commonplace, as the top 6 seeds automatically advance to the second round with the bottom 4 seeds posturing for the right to play David & Goliath. The tournament has a history of favoring top seeds, with the #1 seed winning the event in 5 of the last 8 seasons.

UNC-Wilmington's 21 wins in this tournament is the most by any active conference member and they enter as a strong favorite again this season led by 6'4" guard Brett Blizzard, who has been the MVP in this tournament 2 of the last 3 years. The Seahawks have been in the final 3 consecutive years.

There should be no surprises here on Friday, but an interesting underdog in the event is Old Dominion. The Monarchs were just 9-9 in conference play but they won both games over UNC-Wilmington, beat Drexel on the road and held George Mason to just 46 points. They are far from consistent but can beat anyone in this conference on any day and aren't overly influenced by their environment.

Bring on the Madness: Sun Belt Conference

By Brian Gabrielle

They'll "Diddle" around in the Sun Belt. E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green, Kentucky is the site for the 27th annual Sun Belt Conference Basketball Tournament. The championship game is being broadcast by ESPN on Tuesday March 11 and the winner of that game advances to the NCAA tournament.

An interesting scheduling note on this event is that the #1 seeds could be potentially eliminated on Saturday before the #2 seeds or the 3 seed Southern Alabama ever take the court on Sunday.

That said, the two top seeds in the event have reached the final in both of the last two seasons, with the East seed #1 Western Kentucky defeated the West seed #1 Louisiana-Lafayette to advance.

We have exactly the same top two seeds this season but something has to give.

You see, history will need to re-write itself if it is to repeat itself in 203. The host team has not won this event since the merge of the Sun Belt and American South conferences in 1992. This year the host, #1 seed and defending champion of this conference is Western Kentucky, meaning, something has to give. Western Kentucky also holds the best record of any active conference team with a 24-16 ledger in this tournament. They enter this event having won 9 straight and have suffered just two conferences losses, both on the road, including a narrow road loss at Middle Tennessee State back on January 4th.
