interesting read i found :

The Dogs continue to bark in PAC 10 football action. The Dogs cashed three out of four two weeks ago and all but one game last week. Only Washington State was able to hold form and prove the oddsmakers correct in their triumph at Stanford as a favorite. Oregon and Arizona State won out right as dogs while Washington and Usc won but did not overcome the posted number and failed to cash the money. Looking inside this week?s match ups the favorites look enticing. Let?s dive in?

The Ducks continue their flight towards another PAC 10 conference title and remain undefeated after slipping past the Bruins at UCLA last week 31-30. Oregon will host the Sun Devils who bounced back off a SU loss to overcome Dennis Erickson?s troops at home last week. ASU was installed as a home dog and overcame the Beavers. USC had to come from behind to overcome the furious Bears who sprinted to a 21-3 lead in the first half of their game this past Saturday. USC eventually corralled the Bears and went to win 30-28. Washington escaped the Wildcats for the second year in a row at home winning 32-28 and Washington State never looked back after the opening kickoff in their travels to the Farm. The Cougars kept Stanford scoreless until late in the second half of the game. This week, the pre-season favorites, USC and Washington hook up in LA this week; Arizona will try to take advantage of a defenseless Stanford club at the Farm. UCLA will get their chance to tackle new HC Tedford who has resurrected the Bears of Cal. Both Washington State and Oregon State have the week off.

PAC 10 Numbers:

The PAC 10 will play all conference match ups again this week. Year to date, the PAC 10 is 26-10 SU and 19-14-1 ATS in non-conference action this year. When installed as Favs they are 15-11-1 ATS as a conference and now 8-5 ATS overall away. One non-conference match up remains on the Pac 10 schedule in ?02. Southern Cal will host Notre Dame on 11/30 to close out their regular season campaign.

The Pac10 Games On Tap

Washington @ SOUTHERN CAL
USC by 1

This has been a competitive series of late with Washington holding a slight edge in the win-loss column. Usc trails 3-4-1 SU in the last eight match ups but has won two of the last three meetings at this venue. Usc holds an edge in the ATS ledger cashing five of the last eight meetings. Washington is 1-3 ATS in the series as a favorite and 2-2 ATS when installed as a dog. The Huskies escaped the Wildcats last week winning 32-28. Washington barely escaped Arizona last year at home winning 31-28. The Huskies are 5-1 ATS in the first of two away games. They were able to win 27-24 over the Trojans last year at home. Usc needed a strong second half effort from their defense to allow them a chance to outlast the talented Bears last week. And that is indeed what they received when the defense held the Bears to only seven second half points last week. Usc trailed 17-21 at the half and mustered 13-second half points to keep their PAC 10 title hopes alive in ?02. The Trojans held the ball for nearly more than 17 minutes vs. the Bears last week. Usc needs a win here to control their destiny down the stretch. It will be a stretch to pencil in the W just yet, as Washington has displayed patterns of playing to the level of their competition in recent years. The Trojans are also disappointing in the role of playing at home before taking to the road for two or more away tussles failing in seven of eight tries S?93. Usc has been noted to be thin in the secondary and it showed last week. Even though both teams appear to very talented, the edge may lie with the Huskies who appear to be playing more consistent football of late. This game goes down to the wire.

Arizona @ STANFORD
Arizona by 6

Although the Wildcats are a far cry when comparing the talent between them and Washington State, still the Cardinal?s are a rebuilding program. Arizona has shown resiliency this football season. They have beaten Utah and North Texas, both bowlers last year and played tough against Washington last week after losing handily to the Ducks at home two weeks ago. Arizona has taken six of eight meetings in this series and has won four straight at the Farm. The Wildcats are also 4-0 ATS at this venue in those previous four meetings. Stanford should maintain some respect and enter this game as the favorite. Looking inside the numbers, Stanford committed 11 penalties, threw two interceptions and held the ball for almost nine minuets more than the Cougars. They held Washington State to 70 yards rushing and posted 308 yards of offense for themselves. It is important to put the ball in the end zone and keep the opponent from scoring if a win is the result of the contest. Stanford has been able to generate 18 points in their last two games prior to 114 in their first three games of the season. And those foes were B College, San Jose State and Arizona State. When playing on the road Arizona has been focused in the role of a revenging squad cashing nine of the last ten efforts. The Wildcats are now 10-2 ATS as conference road dogs and 11-4 ATS as road dogs overall S?98. The Cardinal has enjoyed playing games before facing the Bruins of late. Stanford is 4-0 ATS last four in that role. Stanford may stink the Farm up again this week noting they are 1-7 ATS in game six of the season last eight years. The Cardinal?s have lost four in a row twice in the last five seasons and look for them to make it three in the past six years.

UCLA @ CALIFORNIA
CALIFORNIA by 4

This is an intriguing contest. The Bears and Bruins enter the game off heartbreaking losses last week. UCLA battled undefeated Oregon to the final stages of the game last week only to come up short by one point. Cal led Southern Cal 21-3 in the second quarter of their game only to come up short by two points. The Bears are now 5-2 ATS on the season and have won seven of the last ten meetings against the number in this series. The teams have split the SU results at 5-5. Cal has enjoyed the home field advantage cashing four of the last five meetings. The Bears are also on a 2-0 run and have taken five of the last seven as dogs. Unlikely UCLA will be installed as road favorite in this contest. HC Tedford has made the most of his 16 returning starters and turned QB Boller into a promising prospect. The Bears are 6-3 ATS at home before playing two away and 0-1 ATS this year. Cal has cashed four of five contests when playing before facing the Beavers of Oregon State. The dog in this series has cashed five of the last six and needless to say Cal has been the dog in the last five meetings. It was ?96 the last time Cal was favored in this series. UCLA must take better care of the football after tossing three interceptions to the Ducks last week. The Bruins posted more than 400 yards of offense and 100 of them via the running game. UCLA cannot make the same mistakes against an offensively talented Bear club this week. The Bruins are 3-7 ATS away vs. a foe off SU & ATS loss but they are 3-1 ATS when playing on the road before facing the Cardinal of Stanford. UCLA is also 4-0-1 ATS in their last roles as an underdog when playing away from Los Angeles. Note the Bruins have thrashed opponents this year who were losing teams last year and those clubs being Oklahoma State, San Diego State and Oregon State. Cal and Arizona are the only remaining teams with a losing record from last year on their schedule. Cal has the weapons to stay in the game with Ucla who has shown vulnerability this season against top-notch coaches. Colorado has stopped UCLA, and this past week Oregon got in front of them and they needed a furious come back to over Colorado State to open the season. UCLA slips in this game and Cal wins the money to improve to 6-2 ATS this year in a thrilling contest.

Arizona State @ OREGON
OREGON by 8

Talk about dominance! The Ducks have been able to avoid the eclipse of the Sun Devils in this series. ASU has fallen short in seven of the last ten meetings SU in this series. Looking back at the register, ASU has dropped five of six SU at Eugene including three in a row. In fact, ASU has lost only one game by less than 10 points excluding their SU victory here back in ?95 by 11 as 13-point pup. That blemish for Oregon occurred in HC Mike Bellotti?s debut and fans should not expect that type of outcome this Saturday. Keep in mind ASU has cashed five of the last seven against the money in this series but they are only 2-4 ATS of late here. The Ducks have cashed two of the last three meetings vs. the number and based on their leaky performance last week look for HC Bellotti to make some adjustments against the potent Sun Devils. The Ducks have allowed four of their last five opponents to reach the 100-yard plateau in rushing. The perseverance of Oregon is still flying high. Oregon has won at least five games in the last five seasons by less than 8 points. This Sun Devil squad can move the football. In their last four games ASU has averaged 335 yards through the air and in five of their last six games they have rushed the ball for more than 100 yards. The Devils have been devilish to the oddsmakers as well in game eight of their campaign the last 14 seasons. They are 12-2 ATS and looking for more this week. ASU enters the game with quadruple revenge and brings enough talent to the field to surprise the Ducks who have Southern Cal on deck. Entering the season the Ducks were 1-4 ATS as DD favorites vs. an opponent off a SU win. ASU played a gutsy game last week holding Oregon State to just 9 rushing yards. There were a lot of mistakes in the game; five interceptions and two fumbles combined which led to a low scoring affair. ASU has the tools to put numbers on the board and Oregon has slipped in the consistent dominant role. The Ducks have flipped their ATS result in every game except one allowing Fresno State and UCLA to give them scares in ?02. If ASU can take care of the football this week, they have enough motivation to bring their A game to the field this week. Oregon has been dominant, but remember they have the tenacity of winning close games along the way.

intersting to read things in hindsight....wish i had found this article earlier....oh well....
