Will update record later . . . it?s bad
Michael Floyd isn?t a receiver that can be replaced and the ND offense is certainly worse without him than with him, but the last 3 recruiting classes have been stockpiling great wide receivers. His replacement will likely be Kumara who doesn?t have the speed to get deep as easily as Floyd, but is 6?5? and will present matchup problems, Parris who reminds everyone of Shark mostly because he?s tall and white instead of any real skills is dependable or frosh Shaquille Evans who Weis has wanted to get in the game more because he?s been deserving (however, if he came back to the ball on the last offensive play against Michigan, they?d be 3-0). I?m not even counting in two sophomores who were also recruiting ?gets? because they haven?t seen the field. I honestly think that 3-deep in the 3-wide is still as good of receivers as Purdue has seen except for Oregon?s Jamere Holland. Floyd and Tate were also out in the spring, so Clausen has extensive experience with all these guys. The downfall of the passing game last year started when Floyd went out, but it had a lot to do with not having a running game to fall back on which isn?t the case this year.
What struck me about the Purdue game last week isn?t that a MAC school came in and won, it was that they physically dominated the Boilers. You?ll always have a Miami(OH) or Central or Western chuck the ball 50 times and present some matchup problems, but rarely will you see a MAC team call as many dive plays and be successful. They?ve got problems in their defense which was supposed to be somewhat of a strength and while they?ll have success up the middle on ND, I think the DB problems that they had last week are somewhat of an aberration. I didn?t play ND last week because I know how the Michigan loss affected the fan base and I thought it would be even worse on the kids. They played strong against Nevada and Michigan and they?re the same guys from last year that were solid, so I?m putting more credence on what I saw for 14 games than what I saw from one. The only real downgrade from last year is at Middle Linebacker and it?s not much of a dropoff.
I?m expecting both offenses to perform fairly well and expecting a few negative plays (maybe a blitz can finally get home) from Purdue?s offense to be the difference, but I don?t think that Purdue will be able to keep up with the pace.
Boiler Down, bitches!!!
Notre Dame -6.5 (-120) 2 units
Another supposed strength was the Northwestern defense, but they?ve been decimated in the defensive backfield, but the weakness in QB and receivers hasn?t come to fruition either. As much as Minny wants to be a running team, they?ve got too much of a matchup advantage to work the ground this week.
NW/Minny Over 48.5
