Vandy's Gray to face USA teammate in California
Two of college baseball?s elite right-handed pitchers are slated to throw Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles.
It just so happens that sophomores Sonny Gray of Vanderbilt and Gerrit Cole of UCLA are also former teammates with the 2009 USA Baseball National Team.
The Commodores (4-0) visit the No. 23 Bruins (4-0) at 8 p.m. Friday in the first of three games for Coach Tim Corbin?s team in the Dodgertown Classic. Vanderbilt travels to USC at 8:30 p.m. Saturday and meets Oklahoma State at noon Sunday at Dodger Stadium.
But the first matchup should be the best, at least in terms of pitching.
?We are going to face maybe the best right-hander in the country,? Corbin said. ?I?m going to tell Sonny that, too.?
Cole and Gray combined forces on Team USA last summer and were equally stellar. Gray went 3-1 with a 0.75 ERA, striking out 27 over 24 innings in eight appearances (two starts). Cole was 4-0 with a 1.06 ERA, striking out 46 over 34 innings in six outings (five starts).
Cole was named to the World Baseball Challenge All-Tournament Team for the championed Americans, who finished the summer with a 19-5 mark. Gray has already committed to the 2010 USA Baseball National Team.
Cole, an imposing 6-4, 220-pound California native, turned down the New York Yankees after being taken 28th overall in the first round of the 2008 MLB amateur draft. As a freshman at UCLA, he posted a 3.49 ERA in 85 innings with 104 strikeouts.
Gray (5-11, 195), who made it known he would not turn pro after graduating from Smyrna High, was still drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 27th round in 2008. Gray had a 5-1 record and 4.30 ERA as a freshman, striking out 72 in 58.2 innings.
?It?s going to be very tough competition,? Corbin said. ?You?re playing on someone else?s yard. You?re playing at UCLA and USC, and that?s great experience for us really to play two West Coast teams.
?I?m just looking forward to another trip, getting off our yard. Maybe getting in an uncomfortable position, which is good for the kids.?Vandy crushed Niagara last weekend by a combined 46-5 over three games, with Gray going eight shutout innings in the opener.
It was considerably closer on Tuesday night as the Commodores outlasted Austin Peay 2-1 in 11 innings in freezing temperatures at Hawkins Field.
Senior catcher Andrew Giobbi, whose two-out single off Austin Peay closer Zach Gerler plated Bryan Johns for the walk-off win, said he?s been eyeing this California trip for a long time. Vanderbilt departs Nashville at 5 a.m. Thursday.
?I think we?re pretty well prepared going in,? Giobbi said. ?The Japan (exhibition) trip (in November) was obviously a big indication of what we can do against good competition.
?Just getting out here and playing and seeing live pitching and other arms and other uniforms, I think we?re very well prepared. We?ve got our work cut out for us. We?ve got our work cut out for us starting Friday.?
