Kansas City area for who knows how long....
the family got the niece a fancy SLR like this one around your price, after she decided to move up into the world of amazingly better pictures beyond the smartphone/$300 point-and-shoot camera.

The only thing I would pay extra for is wifi on the camera if ya wanna upload pictures to the internet right away.

or a waterproof camera, if you doing lots of stuff outdoors with kids or at the beach (waterproof is also sandproof).

Thanks Terry, looks great. Read a lot of reviews on this one and have yet to see a negative one (for the money at least).

Scott- would love a go-pro for personal use, but this ones for mamma.

Nikon D5200

Nikon D5200

I bought this one about a week ago off of ebay and got it with a full kit, 2 memory cards, and a scope. I have got to tell you this is bad ass:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/191006121005?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Also, bought a more powerful scope as well:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/141344447051?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

I'm sure this will be all I need for a while. It was ranked as the number one camera at CNet as well for entry level dSLR.

http://www.cnet.com/topics/cameras/best-digital-cameras/

I'm really impressed with it so far and plan on taking a photographer class in my free time. I wanted to keep it under $1,000 and talked to a few of my friends who were photographers before making any purchase.

Good luck in your search!!

Thanks Kneifl.......

I found this comparing the one you bought and the one Terry suggested.... http://snapsort.com/compare/Nikon-D3200-vs-Nikon-D5200

Couple of questions. I know the 18-55 can get things twice as close, what are the practical purposes for a "soccer mom" to have the 55-300 lens you bought? I ask to try and figure out if I need to get her one. Also did you have any other brands/models that were a close 2nd? I dont mind spending more if it's needed, but I would rather not spend an extra 2-3 hundred for accessories/hardware that she will never need/use. Thanks man

I'm sure either one would be good and suit a soccer mom's needs. I bought the scope and the kit primarily because I want to take pictures of Landscapes. My brother-in-law is a professional photographer and does a lot of internet marketing in the Czech republic. He has a wicked good camera and many scopes. He said with the scopes he has he can take great landscape photos and make the pictures look very good. I have a pic he took of Prague overlooking the Charles Bridge in my office and I really like it, it's professional grade and when I went to have it framed the people at the framing shop were in love with the pic saying that it was immaculate. I got the kit for less than $600 so this would probably be a pretty good bet if you want to spend a tad more. I don't think you need the extra scope though. I know I will only get this one extra scope and it suits my needs just fine. I just wanted to get it because I may take a photography class, I'm sort of looking at this like a hobby. Also, I think it will come in handy for my wife's real estate business which allows me to write this off at the end of the year. As for other brands that I looked at some were Nikons and some were Canons, and for this type of camera I was told a Nikon would be my best bet. Some of my professional photographer friends raved about this one too so it made it an easy decision. I looked at the Nikon D610 for a while but figured it was way too much camera for me and it was very expensive. However, Canon makes some fine cameras as well. I'm sure you won't go wrong with what you decide to purchase. Good luck buddy!
