Going out there in August for the first time since my Dad took me when I was 18. I'm 31 now :scared Going with my biatch, Mom, Dad, Aunt, Uncle, Cousin. So the question is we are in a toss up where to stay. On the strip or not? The Orleans and The Excalibur are the two choices. My parents are in their late 50s and my Mom loves the Orleans because she says it is safe. I have no idea but they are basically leaving it up to me. My cousin is my age and voted strip but I want them to be comfortable. HELP!!
I dont really care because I will be playing poker all the time.

'Safe' has nothing to do with anything as they're both safe. Orleans has a decent poker room and I don't think Excaliiber even has one, since that's your priority. That said, Orleans is well off the strip and although Excaliber is on the far south side of the strip, it still is much more convenient to go to other casinos, as I assume everybody would want to do.

Orleans is a very average locals casino(as far as accomodations go) and Excal will have a ton of kids running around.

Out of those two choices, I *guess* I would choose Excal for everbody else and Orleans for you since you will be in the poker room 24/7, as you say.

Thanks Kosar. I doubt my place to play will be The Orleans so that wont really factor in, going to play all over. I would assume off the strip would be safer, is that not the case?

darlin', i'll give you the same type of advice i just gave GRAVY..... going to vegas in August means STAY wherever you want to gamble, cuz you sure as hell ain't gonna want to go outside the confines of a single casino for long ;)

GEEZ, whatever happened to the October and March rule for Vegas vacations? :(

That's correct, sir. Gets quite hot. However, people make fun of people saying it's not as bad because it's a dry heat, but it's true. 114 in Vegas was MUCH less unpleasant to deal with than 100 in Houston or Dallas was. At least for me.

just read jack's recent post, throw in a few by fletch, and YES, it IS that freakin' hot ;)

BUT IT'S A DRY HEAT .... MY ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a dry heat when it's 120 in August still sucks, and you want to stay right inside the casino you're staying, so keep that in mind while booking a room!!

(also keep in mind that i wish i was there with you ;) )

NP Agent,

If that's the situation(your poker intentions of going all over), then Excaliber would win in a landslide. No, that's not the case(safer off the strip). The strip is as safe as it gets. I'm not sure where your mom is getting that from. Less wild or crowded? Sure. But not more safe at the Orleans.

And the Excaliber is probably the least 'wild' place out there on the strip.

I imagine the prices are pretty simiilar between those two places. I would go to Excal.

Annie,

It's brutal out there in the summer, but if you go from cab to hotel to cab to hotel, it's not prohibitive. I grew up in the midwest and obviously have lived in Florida for a while, but it's just as bad up there(midwest) or here when compared to Las Vegas' weather for three months or so.

That said, if you plan to walk the 2 mile long strip, checking things out, then you need to go in the time frame that you mentioned.

You mean me in particular or you just wish you were in Vegas?? :)
Yes Kosar I think my Mom is probably relating calmer and all that to safer. Plus she likes the fact they make you show your room key to get on the elevator? Sounds like the Ex might be the deal. The prices are very similar. Im hopin to get comped :)

I wouldn't be too worried about safety on the strip. Stay at Excalibur since it's closer to all the major casinos. Cabs are everywhere and you can get to most place from Excalibur for under 10 bucks. It's hard to walk outside for more than 10 minutes in the heat right now.

ummm...would either *YES*, or *BOTH* be an appropriate answere her? )

Matt, i would take 95 degrees over 120 degrees anytime in the midwest (and we have had brutal weather in eastern Iowa so far this summer, but at least the humidity has died down for the John Deere Classic) we won't see green grass again until next year with the total lack of precip.

Agent, you gotta remember, the *I* states (indiana, illinois, iowa) have a cost of living like no other states north of alabama ;)

$10 for a 3 block cab ride is nothing in vegas, up here it feeds a family of 4 at Micky D's ;)

how close are you to Valpo? we will be there in 2 weeks. :D

I'm about 2 1/2 from Valpo although I used to live in Chesterton which is about 15 minutes and I can guarantee I have a few illegitimate kids out there from the old Ben Willies days. That used to be a hell of a club. What you doing there?

maybe those kids you speak of have attended the place we will be sleeping ;)

we're going there for a family reunion (it's my ex's family, but i'm the one that makes it possible for the kids to stay in contact with their extended family)

my ex's aunt is very much into education in indiana, and had a pre-school/daycare building right at her house.

i depends on if my daughters ball team makes it to the final round of tourney as to when we will be heading in.. if they play for the championship on that friday, we won't head in till the 23rd. if not, we will spend the 22nd at great america,, and drive to valpo when it closes. hope to find time to spend at the dunes on saturday (which didn't work out the past 2 years) :(

anyone in the general vicinity with teen/pre-teen kids that want to spend a day at Great America/Hurricaine Harbor... MAIL ME!!!!!

Personally i wouldn't stay at excalibur, but thats cause they pissed me off, but my buddy stayed at sahara and golden nugget which is downtown but has a good poker room. Excalibur is all low limit on poker manly $1/2 and they have a $100 no limit buyin table, if u wanna play higher stakes u have to go to the luxor or mandalay bay.

Luxor has daily tourneys I think around $50, and i know golden nugget has daily tourneys.
