I just got my Sony TV connected to my Samsung DSS reciever using a S-Video Cable . I'm not too pleased with the quality of the picture. The onscreen programing is better in certain modes but the text that is broadcasted is horrible and almost unreadable. The picture quality is not good at all.

Does anyone have a solution for this?

The DVD player using the composite cables looks great.

I was hoping the digital satellite signal would look much better.

Did anyone else have this issue and if so is there a solution?

Thanks for your help.

Why are you using S-Video? I use component cables for my tivo->tv in my opinion you get a much better picture, S-Video is not nearly as good.

Tell me more about the tv/age? What kind of TV is it tube or projection? Is it new? I have Directv as well with a projection tv and no the text quality is not as good as a tube tv for obvious reasons. You may need to get in there and refocus and calibrate the guns, I do it about every month.

If your plasma tv is HDTV (which the Sony is) you will need a set top HD Decoder box/tune in addition. Some tvs now have the tuner built in, but I dont think that model does. You can either buy a tuner off the shelf at Best Buy, or some cable companies like Cox rent them out. You will also need a cable company that is broadcasting a digital signal, some companies are doing both regular cable and digital cable and they charge more for digital - some may not be doing digital cable at all. But digital cable does not by itself = hdtv. Digital cable just means that with the addition of that extra box you can receive the 1080i HD signal.

TV question.

TV question.

Ace,

I'm using S-Video because my DirecTV receiver only has S-video and RCA (or Componant).

When you say you are using "component" are you really meaning composite? Because S-video is far better than RCA or Componant.

The order of quality goes like this:
Worse to Best
Coax
Component
S-Video
Composite
DVI

My TV is brand new Sony KP-51WS510 and I'm using the best connections possible.

I appreciate anyones help.

So do you think that a better reciever with RGB would be the answer?

What I have now isn't very good.

I work for a cable company here in Chicago. To get your HDTV service you would have to have your local cable company or in your case Direct TV come out and bring you the convter box for you. I do get alot of complaints though that Direct TV's HDTV has been a preety crappy signal. Really the best cable/connector to get would be a BNC cable, but they are a little expensive. They thing is if you buy another reciever, it could make the signal even worse. Using more components for your cable and stuff ,you will start to detieriate the signal. But like I said before the only thing you need, is a HDTV converter box to recieve those channels, and Direct TV should of supplied you with that. You shouldn't have to go out and buy anything else

When you say Directv "should have" supplied you with the HD set top box, thats just not true at all. They dont just give away HD tuners, and I dont know of any cable companies that give you a free HD tuner either. They already give away the regular tuners, HD boxes are expensive. And they will send it to you or you can use an off the shelf product. No need for them to hand deliver it to you. They do have a fairly good deal running though on their site where they will sell you the box for $350 or so, install the 3rd prong on your dish and run the extra wire. And I have seen some stunning DTV HD signals, so dont listen to the cable guy he obvoiusly holds some bias here.... ;) ;)
