There will be 6 divisions next year instead of 4. The division winners in each conference are automatically seeded 1-2-3, then 5 wildcards. Already I see problems for this with the NBA's fixed brackets in the playoffs.
You're going to get a pretty darn strong #4 seed in each conference each year. Meanwhile, you are probably going to get a weak #3 seed winning it's division. In the second round, the winner of the 1st/8th series always plays the winner of 4th/5th, and the winner of 2nd/7th always plays the winner of 3rd/6th. This means you are going to get the conference's top team playing the best wildcard team (or 2nd best) every year. Meanwhile the 2nd place team gets to beat up on a weak division winner.
The setup in the NHL is similar to what the NBA is adopting...BUT... in the NHL the brackets are not fixed. The highest-surviving team gets the lowest. So if a #7 seed pulls off an upset in the NHL, they face #1 next. But if a #7 pulls off an upset in the NBA, they will have a MUCH easier ride, getting the winner of 3 vs 6, if you follow me.
