If the Democrats are dumb enough to block funding for these additional troops, then they have no hope as a party. Period.

Kick and scream all you want about sending them, but do not block funds.

30 years after our last miserable, useless adventure in Vietnam and we still hear how we were *this* close (after 13 years of war) to winning. If that damn democratic congress hadn't cut funds.

Let the people who started and prosecuted this war, own this war.

I guess Bush had Maliki on a 3 hour tele-conference a few days ago and I just have to assume, and hope, that he explained very explicitly that he needed to step up in a huge way because once these 20,000 additional troops are sent, the clock is ticking rapidly.

Stepping up does NOT include ordering checkpoints and roadbloscks removed as we're looking for a kidnapped soldier in Sadr city.

Maliki is going to have to make a big decision, sooner than later, about what to do about his buddy Al-Sadr.

I have to believe that even his staunchest supporters(dwindling, but a few still around) in Congress and in his party regarding Iraq will see this 'surge' as W's last chance. If for no other reason than that their political lives very well way hang in the balance in how they react to Iraq.

They already saw many of their comrades fall on this same sword.

good post kosar...

i have said from the begining that there weren't enough troops at the start of the war. now basing my knowledge on just what i have read, i don't think 20,000 is nearly enough. troops have to be sent to the border areas of iran & syria to block the thugs coming in from those countries. to me that's the biggest part of fixing the problem. after sealing off the borders, they then should proclaim marshall law & shoot anybody that violates this law.they also have to take down al sada(sp ?)...from a nobody they have let him become an important player...

this is exactly why it is too dangerous to vote these buffoons in power

they will do anything and everything to win political points regardless with what is going on in the world and will hang our military out to dry if it means more votes

the situation is not as we would like it and we need to secure the oil fields and stabilize the region plain and simple and these democrats need to do what they can to do that regardless of what they thought about the war (when many of them voted for it when thinking it was politically expedient)

if there is no stability, the worldwide economy tanks

So why didn't your Republican hero's do it in the 4 years they had complete control over the war? You really are piece of work blaming the Democrats for the failure of Bush's War when he had everything he wanted given to him. It was Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld telling us we didn't need more troops. Or were they only saying that to try to save the election?

Look for the US body count to go up

Look for the US body count to go up

Bush ain't going to lose any body parts. The troops are just Texas deathrow inmates to him. Vietnam had 550,000 troops at one time and still loss. Iraq, which is bigger, is going to have 160,000 troops. This guy is a dummy and should be in jail. How many have to die before troops come home? 4,000- 5,000-7,000 or 10,000. It doesn't matter, it's all the same to Bush. Escalation of the war will not work.

An additional 20,000 troops doesn't mean much when the current 140,000 troops have been stuck in a quagmire for the last four years.

A 15% increase isn't going to change anything....

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush was upset after watching the video of Saddam Hussein's execution.

Bush found the taunting of Hussein as he stood on the gallows with a noose around his neck disturbing, the officials said.

See Bush does have a heart. He was upset over the video.

I hate to be the one to say this but

Muqtada al-Sadr, the radical Shiite cleric whose father is believed to have been murdered by Hussein's regime is going to be the next leader of Iraq once we leave.

He will wait us out and then murder whoever is in power and takeover. There is no reason why he shouldnt have already been caught and in prison.

No way 20k more troops work. Bush trying to get through 2 yrs and let someone else worry about it. Go home to Austin and retire in peace.

Just catching Hannity and Newt show on FOX. Both of course are kissing right wing ass. And of course say this is the answer. After 3.5 years they just found out 20000 more of our best will get it done. Give me a break. Maybe if who ever plan this piss poor operation 4 yeas ago would have did it right from the start. Like 50000 more. Were dealing with idiots. And there some in both parties.

Agree with all of that.

If Maliki chooses to side with us and attempts to disarm the Al-sadr militia, then he will be killed by Al-Sadr forces. No question.

He will NEVER openly take on Al-Sadr because he knows he would die.

But the Al-Sadr forces are who are driving the mass executions in Baghdad. And of course the resultant Sunni retaliations. 20,000 troops will make no difference. Our whole military would make no difference.

The execution is a minor thing, in the scheme of things, yet of course that is botched as well, by Iraqi's practically, but by the US by proxy.

he is no dummy. 20 thousand does one thing and its nothing its just stay the course. Now we need more money which is more to steal. face it not one of us will still be alive before every troop comes home from Iraq. Now that we are gonna steal the oil you need someone to guard it. You need people to guard the bases which should have never been built. their will be killings the next 2000 years just because of this. these people hold grudges and you can't blame them. to think these two groups are just gonna shake hands and forget about everything is foolish. Zacarwi won starting the Civil war and Bush Cheney and his buddies win because they get two more years of war profiteering. I never saw a guy so sure he was right but wont send his daughters into the fight. Be nice if he at least sent Barney for a few days.

I think that general that disapproved of sending more troops is named Abizaid. Bush didn't like what he had to say. Abizaid steps aside.
