NFL ............ 2-1 ........... + $ 187.00

College NCAA ....... 4-1 ... +$ 1,592.00

Have not played many games so far this year, but I have been watching alot of football. Both College and NFL.

Still hard to stomach that South Carolina game losing for me in the last play of the game. Should have bought that extra 1/2 point.

Folks in Atlanta got all excited about how the Facons got back in their own special place with Turner running the ball and just a grind it out type game.

Problem is they were doing it against the Carolina Panthers with a rookie QB and one of the worst teams in the NFL.

Falcons play like shit on the road.

Falcons secondary will be in big time trouble in this game.

Oh yeh but Ray Edwards is a beast against Detroit :142smilie

Julio Jones still not playing with his hammy .

Detroit has no running back now with Best out.

Dont worry they wont need one in this game.

Detroit aint losing two in a row in front of the home folks. Players rally around coach for last weeks handshake crap. Brought the team closer in my opinion.

man the Falcons suck

"Niners have ruined several fantasy seasons," Five Ring Circus mused, exhibiting the swagger a 5-1 record affords a fan. "Maybe Sando can keep a running total of RBs knocked out for significant period: Arian Foster, Felix Jones, LeGarrette Blount, Jahvid Best."

To be sure, San Francisco and Seattle run defenses have done the NFC West proud this season. The 49ers rank second in rushing yards allowed per game. The Seahawks rank first in yards per carry allowed.

Back to the claim about the 49ers knocking out running backs.

Foster tweaked a hamstring against the 49ers during preseason, and some fans insist a hit by the 49ers' Patrick Willis played a role. I'm not certain of that, but play-by-play records show Willis tackling Foster on what turned out to be his final play in the game.

The Cowboys' Jones suffered a separated shoulder when Willis and fellow linebacker NaVorro Bowman tackled him in Week 2. Willis made the primary tackle, with Bowman landing on Jones as the running back went to the ground.

Tampa Bay's Blount suffered a leg injury against the 49ers in Week 5. He came up limping after taking a big hit to the legs from free safety Dashon Goldson following a 29-yard reception midway through the third quarter. He did not touch the ball again during that game.

Best suffered a concussion against the 49ers last week. I'm not sure when.

For the regular season, the 49ers have injured three of their six opponents' starting backs. Next up: Peyton Hillis and the Cleveland Browns in Week 8. Hillis has missed one game already. He missed practice Thursday with a hamstring injury. If he plays in Week 7, he'll have to get through Seattle's run defense before facing the 49ers.

Update: Hey, great minds think alike. Nice job by Cam Inman writing about this earlier Thursday. Thanks for the heads up, Cam!

.....................................................................

Atlanta might watch what San Fran did on defense vs Detroit. But thats about all .

If you have seen the Falcons try to play defense against the better teams, then you can see clearly
what will befall the Falcons secondary come Sunday

On the remaining seven drives, not counting the one-play kneel down to end the first half, the Falcons totaled just 111 yards of offense. Ryan was 10-for-22 for 87 yards. The Falcons had five punts, four came after just three plays, and two interceptions the remainder of the game.

?Nothing we tried in the second half worked very well at all,? Falcons coach Mike Smith said.

As Smith noted in his post-game press conference, the Falcons had a first down on their opening drive on the third quarter. Their next first down didn?t come until the fourth quarter, on an unnecessary roughness call on the Packers? A.J. Hawk.

?We couldn?t convert first downs,? Smith said. ?? You?ve got to be more efficient, more effective moving the football especially against a football team like the Green Bay Packers that has such a potent offense.?

Keeping the Packers off the field was the script. And it was working early.

?It was clear they wanted to limit the possessions in the game and let their offense run the clock down,? Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said.

Penalties were an issue for the Falcons offense.

In the second quarter, leading 14-3, offensive lineman Tyson Clabo was called for holding which negated a 47-yard completion to Harry Douglas. Clabo was called for illegal use of the hands that stalled the first drive of the second half. Julio Jones was called on an illegal formation penalty on the first play on the next drive. An unsportsmanlike conduct call on White halted the third drive.

With the Falcons offense not able to sustain drives and keep possession of the football, the Packers reeled of 25 straight points.

In addition to the penalties, Smith insisted the Falcons failures were a matter of execution. He bristled at the notion that the play-calling was an issue for the decline in production.

?It?s my responsibility that the plays that are going in give our players the best opportunity to succeed and I?ll take full responsibility for that,? Smith said. ?No one else.?:142smilie :142smilie :scared

FLOWERY BRANCH ? Falcons starting left tackle Sam Baker (lower back injury) returned to practice and was listed as questionable for Sunday?s game with the Detroit Lions.

Baker did not practice on Wednesday and Thursday.

Cornerback Christopher Owens (concussion) was declared out for the Lions? game. Wide receiver Julio Jones did not practice, but was declared doubtful.

If Baker is not ready to play, Will Svitek would get the start. :scared

John Abraham (groin), Todd McClure (knee) and Garrett Reynolds (ankle) were limited in practice and listed as questionable for the game.

James Sanders (hamstring), Jonathan Babineaux (knee), Tony Gonzalez (elbow) and Roddy White (knee) all fully participated in practice and were listed as probable
.........................................................................

Will Grimes who is 5' 10" with heels, be able to cover Calvin Johnson ? Johnson is 6'5" with a vertical leap of 45 ? .

That means Stafford can throw it 10 ft high and have a good chance of Calvin J making the reception.

Maybe Dunta Stunta Robinson, who the Falcons paid 30 million for from Houston, would be a better choice to guard Calvin :scared :142smilie

Who is going to take on Pettigew across the middle ?

oh shit.

Now here comes Suh up the middle, who will take Bakers place, the Falcons Number 1 pick a few years back, when the going gets tough.

Will Svitek

Meanwhile, Coach Mike Smith is playing some kind of girls game with the injury list. He thinks the girls at Detroit will arrange their defense as if Julio J was going to play, when the reality is everyone knows he won?t. If he does, he will be out 6 weeks repulling it.

Falcons Coach is losing it.

Coach Smith - Matty Ice , Turner the burner seems to have lost a step or two. He is getting stuffed and he is all we got.

Listen , Can you run for the first down behind left tackle on this play ?

Ryan - Uh Coach , Baker is out. Willy Stivek is in there and he has been flopping like a fawking fish the whole game.

Coach - OK well can you quick kick it out of bounds on third down to catch the Detroit defense off guard ?

Ryan - Uh sure Coach, but there is 3 minutes left in the game, and we are behind by 10 points.

Coach Smith - Yeh OK . lets try a field goal then.

Ryan - Uhhh Coach we are on our own 28 yard line

Coach - Well do you any other smart fawking ideas
Mr Brainiac ?

Ryan - Maybe you should ask Arthur , he is standing right behind you.

Coach Smith - Gulp........

The Lions have finally put it together in 2011. They have a talented young quarterback in Matthew Stafford, a cohesive offensive line, one of the best receivers in the NFL in Calvin Johnson, an extremely potent front four and underrated pieces in the secondary. They are, in short, a complete team with a lot of dangerous weapons. That's why they're 5-1.

Can the Falcons shut down Megatron?

Calvin Johnson is the most dangerous receiver in the NFL, in my opinion. He's unquestionably among the elite. With his combination of size, speed and unsettling, almost robotic calm, he's a force of nature. In the red zone, he's probably the best pass catcher in the entire league.:00hour

With Stafford's cannon arm, the deep ball becomes a danger. With his solid accuracy and Megatron's ability to reel in passes in entirely different cities, the short passes become a problem. The Lions have a solid second receiver in Nate Burleson, a dynamic young slot guy in Titus Young and a talented, bruising tight end in Brandon Pettigrew. Those guys can burn you to an extent, but it's Johnson who is most dangerous. :0008

The Falcons can't afford to fool around with him. Whether they're putting Brent Grimes or Dunta Robinson on him, they should be constantly double-teaming. That means getting Thomas DeCoud down there, it means cheating a nickel back over on long routes and it means that every guy in the secondary knows where Megatron is at all times. It only takes one beautiful spiral pass to Johnson to break the game open, and the Falcons know it.

Question 1: Will Michael Turner run all over the place?

Probably. :142smilie

The Falcons have to know that Turner is doing better on outside runs than the infamous up-the-gut forays Mike Mularkey so often sends him on, and they have to know that the Lions are a lot stouter in the middle than they are on the edges. They also have to know that overall, the Lions are no great shakes against the run.

So they'll turn to Turner again. The Burner was an absolute monster against a feeble Panthers run defense, and the Lions are not considerably better. The best move for the Falcons will be to turn him loose, let him run 25 times and quietly augment the ground game with a controlled passing attack.

Question 2: How will the Falcons' offensive line hold up?

This is a question because of the Lions' frightening pass rush ability. With Cliff Avril off the edge, Ndamokung Suh and Nick Fairley in the middle and a cast of underappreciated talent in the front seven, they'll be a real challenge for the Falcons.

Working in the team's favor is the fact that the line has stiffened up in recent weeks, allowing only two sacks over the last two weeks. Working in the Lions' favor is that they have perhaps the best defensive tackles in the league, talent that the Falcons haven't really had to deal with. It may not matter if Sam Baker can hold back Cliff Avril if a gimpy Todd McClure and a still-learning Garrett Reynolds can't do the job against Suh.

Question 3: Speaking of the passing game, how well will it do?

It's no coincidence that the three smaller questions are all about the Falcons' offense. The Lions will have difficulty running against a stout Falcons defense, especially without Jahvid Best. We know their defense is weak against the run and strong against the pass. And if the Falcons can't pass at all, the Lions can key in on Turner.

The biggest question, ironically, might be how Roddy White will fare against Chris Houston. He's no one's idea of a shutdown cornerback, of course, but White's struggled mightily this season at times and Houston is capable of giving him fits.

Sports Journal / somewhere is space

....................................................................

The Falcons secondary can triple team Megatron and still be incapable of holding this player down.

This is going to get embarressing.

Turner gets stopped too many times for 2 yds going up the middle.

Last week they ran him outside but that was against the Panthers.

Lets face it. Turner is 30 years old now and is not the Super Star running back anymore.

I have seen Turner get stopped by 5'10" 180 lb safetys in the backfield this year.

Detroit needs to double up on Roddy with his bad knee , and rush the snot out of Ryan.

If the Falcons give the ball to Turner 25 + times in this game, they are fawked.

According to the New York Life Protection Index, the Falcons have allowed a combined 61 quarterback sacks, hurries and knockdowns. That's a lot.

Especially considering they are about to face an angry and pissed off Lions front line.

One more on Ryan, as we go ESPN Next Level:

Ryan has thrown five of his picks and been sacked 13 times when facing four or fewer rushers. No team has pass-rushed four or fewer this year more than the Lions, who do it on 83.3 percent of all opponent drop-backs. And Detroit does it with no loss of pressure.

This gives the lions extra players to guard the passing lanes.

Wow thats alot of getting knocked around
for Matty Ice

Maybe there?s no such thing as a Week 6 Must Win in the NFL, but this was taking on that look. After three quarters the touted-for-the-Super-Bowl Falcons trailed Carolina, which had won three of its past 19 games, and seemed transfixed by the rookie Cam Newton.

?We really needed to step up the intensity,? said defensive lineman Corey Peters, whose one-handed snatch of a Newton screen finally broke the Camster?s spell. ?He was able to stand back there way too long.?:scared

Lose this game and the Falcons would be 2-4. Lose in Detroit next week, 2-5. Lose to Indianapolis after the bye ? that won?t happen, so 3-5. Lose to New Orleans here on Nov. 10 and it?s 3-6 and desperation time.

And besides: If you can?t beat Carolina at your place, who can you beat?:0008

Moot point now. The Falcons played their best fourth quarter of 2011 ? admittedly, that?s not the stiffest of competitions ? and won by two touchdowns.

The Falcons didn?t take out any frustrations on one of the NFL?s worst aggregations. They spent most of the day getting more frustrated. After Carolina converted a particularly egregious third down ? the Panthers were 8-of-10 on those through three quarters ? head coach Mike Smith could be seen shouting and waving his playcard in the general direction of defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder. (It?s possible Smitty could have been yelling at someone in the booth.

Only in the fourth quarter did VanGorder begin to urn ? uh, earn ? his salary, and even the much-maligned offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey ? we should change his nickname from Double M to Quadruple M ? did the business. The Falcons ran Michael Turner at Carolina, and this bit of Mularkey was dipped in acuity: Carolina entered with the league?s sixth-worst run defense.

Smith spoke afterward of getting ?back on track? and ?finding our DNA [meaning the running game],? but we can?t know if this was the usual happy talk or an actual corner turned. This was, after all, Carolina.:142smilie

After six games the 2011 Falcons have managed few gains and consolidated none. Their week-by-week worksheet: Loss, win, loss, win, loss, win.

About that DNA: Turner rushed for 139 yards on 27 carries, but it?s unclear how that might square with the Falcons? vision of becoming more ?explosive.? Julio Jones didn?t play due to an injury. Roddy White caught two passes for 21 yards, Tony Gonzalez three for 29. Only Ryan?s terrific throw-while-getting-rocked to Harry Douglas inside the final 10 minutes could be considered a vital downfield connection, and it spawned the go-ahead touchdown.

In sum, the Falcons have spent six weeks making us wonder just how good they are. They haven?t beaten anybody who?s above .500. They entered Sunday?s game 19th in total offense and 24th in total defense. (And got outgained by 43 yards by Carolina.) We?ve seen little to make us believe this is a playoff team, let alone a champion-in-waiting.
