With the Phillies getting clubbed (again) by the Cubs tonight, my attention was free to shift elsewhere. I settled on MVP odds. I did a little poking around and here is what I found.

Since 2000, there have been 11 MVPs (McNair and Peyton shared in'03) and 8 of those have been QBs. The three running backs posted record-breaking seasons to best the QBs. So that tells me that unless there is a freakishly good RB season this year, a QB will take home the trophy. That narrows the list down somewhat. And by the way, the league does not consider 2,006 rush yards, 16 total TDs, and 2,509 rush & receiving yards, only the MOST ALL-TIME...., a freakishly good year. Ask Chris Johnson.

The top QBs:
Manning +500
Brees +550
Brady +1000
Rodgers +1400
Favre +1500
Romo +1600
Rivers +1700
McNabb +2000
Eli +2200
Flacco +2200
Schaub +2200

I think we can rule out McNabb, Eli, and Schaub out of the picture. Schaub has a great shot at Offensive Player of the year, much like Brees last season.

Favre is out too. Consider this. Favre finished with his highest yardage and TDs in over a decade. He threw a career-low 7INTs, almost half of his previous best 13. He was the engine behind a team that lost in OT of the NFC Championship to the Super Bowl Champs. Yet he received just 1 first place vote.

In order for Flacco to win, the Ravens would have to make a Super Bowl appearance (not out of the question) and he would have to be the driving force. Not likely. Nobody was giving Ben Roethlisberger MVP-love when the Steelers won in 04-05.

Manning has won the last two seasons and even all the popsicle slurpers in the media will not award Peyton with a third straight MVP, will they?

Brees and New Orleans were a fantastic story last year. Their run to the Super Bowl was a great thing enjoyed by fans of every team save Indianapolis. I'll repeat. Brees and New Orleans were a fantastic story LAST YEAR.

That leaves Rodgers, Brady, Rivers, and Romo. New England was completely undressed by Baltimore in the playoffs and I think that is more of what we will see this year. Rodgers is the "IT BOY". He is ready for his time as a media darling, The Packers are favored to follow up on last year's playoff run and Rodgers has markedly improved from year to year. The same can be said of Romo. His team finally took a step in the right direction last year late in the season. A dangerous team if they play to their potential. The window has been open for Rivers and San Diego for some time. Even the best teams have limited time on the top. The Colts are so unique in their ability to make the playoffs every year which speaks to their constant in both leadership positions.

Already played Rodgers, added Romo.

Let me start by saying I like your breakdown but would add this.

I think most voters thought the Saints were a gimmick offense of sorts who put up big numbers but would flame out. Winning the Super Bowl gives much more reason for Brees to win MVP this year with a repeat performance regular season.

I think the voters would have no issue giving Manning a 3rd straight if he performs. He is just too well liked.

On the plays:
Like the shot on Rodgers, but not feeling Romo and I am a huge Cowboy fan. Guy makes too many mistakes and they will continue to pound the ground with their backs.
