NFL Preview - Indianapolis (13-0) at Jacksonville (7-6)

Apart from a shot at going 16-0, a milestone that the Indianapolis Colts insist they don't care about, Jim Caldwell's team will have absolutely nothing at stake when it travels to meet the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night.

And yet, according to Caldwell, the Colts will be proceeding as if Thursday's contest against their AFC South rival is indeed meaningful.

"We're going to approach the 14th game as we did 1 to 13," said Caldwell in his Monday press conference. "We're going to go out and play just as we have done the previous 13.

"The only thing that will deter anyone from playing time is health issues."

Indeed, there is sufficient reason to believe that the team, which sewed up homefield advantage throughout the AFC portion of the playoffs and also established an NFL record with its 22nd consecutive regular season win last Sunday, will have significant interest in getting to 14-0 at all costs.

First, the Jaguars have given the Colts some trouble through the years, and beating them this week would likely mean Indianapolis wouldn't have to see the Jags in a sudden-death situation in January.

The last four games in the series have been settled by just 14 points, including Indy's 14-12 home win in Week 1. Prior to that stretch, in a game late in the 2006 season, the Jaguars rocked the Colts by a 44-17 margin before Indianapolis subsequently embarked on a run toward a Super Bowl title.

From a matchup standpoint, the one man the Colts and all of their fans most fear getting injured - quarterback Peyton Manning - isn't likely to be touched on Thursday night. The Jaguars are dead last in the league in sacks with 14, and the notoriously quick-firing Manning has been sacked an NFL-low 10 times all year.

Additionally, it's probably a bit too early to call off the dogs and begin thinking about the postseason, lest Indy get stale before they next play an important game again in mid-January.

None of the logic suggesting that the Colts will be motivated to win the game will be music to the Jaguars' ears, as Jacksonville is in desperate need of a victory that will further its playoff prospects.

The Jags suffered a frustrating 14-10 home defeat at the hands of the Miami Dolphins last Sunday, as David Garrard completed just 11-of-26 passes for 139 yards with no touchdowns and three sacks absorbed. Jacksonville could muster just 10 first-downs all day.

Jacksonville continues to hang onto the second of two wild card spots in the AFC, edging out similarly 7-6 Baltimore, Miami, and the New York Jets based on a stronger record (6-3) against conference opponents as Week 15 commences.

A victory will help the Jags remain in the driver's seat entering a two-game road stretch that will have Jack Del Rio's squad concluding its regular season at the Patriots (12/27) and Browns (1/3).

SERIES HISTORY

The Colts hold a 13-4 edge in the regular season series with Jacksonville, including the aforementioned 14-12 victory when the teams met at Lucas Oil Stadium in Week 1. The clubs embarked on an unconventional split of last year's home-and-home, with Indy coming up a 23-21 home loser when the teams met in Week 3, and returning the favor with a 28-25 win at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium in Week 16. The Colts are 2-0 in Jacksonville since suffering a 44-17 loss there in 2006.

Del Rio is 4-9 against the Colts as a head coach, while Indianapolis' Caldwell is 1-0 against both Del Rio and the Jaguars as a head coach.

WHEN THE COLTS HAVE THE BALL

Though Indianapolis comes to town averaging 27.6 points per game, and ranking No. 1 in the NFL in passing offense (296.4 yards per game), the Colts were able to finish off only two drives for scores when they met Jacksonville back in Week 1. Manning (3905 passing yards, 29 TD, 14 INT) threw for 301 yards on 28-of-38 passing in that contest, but the Colts missed on a pair of fourth-down conversions, turned the ball over twice including a Manning INT and Joseph Addai fumble, and missed a field goal to limit their scoring output. If nothing else, Manning might want to erase the memory of an uncharacteristically shaky performance against the Broncos last week, when he completed just 20-of-42 passes for 220 yards and offset his four touchdown passes, including three to tight end Dallas Clark (82 receptions, 8 TD), with a season-high three interceptions. Austin Collie (45 receptions, 4 TD) caught Manning's other TD, but top wideouts Reggie Wayne (87 receptions, 9 TD) and Pierre Garcon (50 receptions, 6 TD) had a quiet day with just six combined catches. Addai (729 rushing yards, 48 receptions, 12 TD), who also had a touchdown in the Week 1 victory over the Jags, led the Colts with 67 rushing yards and 49 receiving yards last week.

Jacksonville enters Week 15 ranked just 20th in NFL total defense (346.5 yards per game), and has experienced the aforementioned struggles in the pass- rushing department, but has also exhibited a bend-but-don't-break ability that has kept the team in games. The Jags forced three turnovers against the Dolphins to keep things interesting a week ago, with rookie cornerback Derek Cox (58 tackles, 3 INT) coming up with an interception and cornerback Tyron Brackenridge (30 tackles) and safety Gerald Alexander (39 tackles, 2 INT) both credited with a pair of forced fumbles. Another rookie, defensive tackle Terrance Knighton (35 tackles, 1.5 sacks), had one of the recoveries but was also part of a group that allowed 46 ground yards to the Fins. Linebacker Justin Durant (80 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT) posted seven tackles in the loss, one week after winning NFL Defensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts in a win over the Texans. Cox notched his first career interception off of Manning in Week 1, while since-injured end Reggie Hayward had the lone sack of the QB. Among active players, DT John Henderson (26 tackles) leads the club in sacks with three. Jaguars cornerback Rashean Mathis (26 tackles, 3 INT), who has missed the last four games with a groin problem, remains a question mark for Thursday.

WHEN THE JAGUARS HAVE THE BALL

If the Jaguars wish to notch their eighth win on Thursday, they will require a better offensive performance than the one they posted against Indy in Week 1, when the team finished with just 228 total yards and 12 first-downs. Top offensive weapon Maurice Jones-Drew played well in that game, rushing 21 times for 97 yards and scoring the team's lone touchdown, but Garrard (2987 passing yards, 10 TD, 6 INT, 267 rushing yards) was just 14-of-28 for 122 yards without a touchdown or turnover. Since that time, Jones-Drew (1136 rushing yards, 14 TD, 44 receptions) has continued along a path that will likely land him in the Pro Bowl, while Garrard has found chemistry with targets such as Mike Sims- Walker (53 receptions, 6 TD) and tight end Marcedes Lewis (28 receptions, 2 TD). Wideout Torry Holt (46 receptions), who led the Jags with 47 receiving yards in the first meeting with Indy, also paced the club with 71 yards on two catches against Miami. Jones-Drew was held to 59 yards on 18 carries in the contest, his fourth straight game under 100 yards. The Jaguars are a middle-of- the-road 15th in NFL total offense (341.3 yards per game) as Week 15 begins.

If Caldwell seeks to sit some players for precautionary reasons on Thursday night, a bulk of them will probably come on the defensive side of the ball. Indy listed ends Dwight Freeney (abdomen) and Robert Mathis (quadriceps) on their Tuesday injury report, as well as cornerback Jerraud Powers (hamstring) and safety Antoine Bethea (foot), and among the team's starters, it is these figures that seem least likely to play on Thursday. Freeney (22 tackles, 11.5 sacks) had the team's lone sack of Garrard in Week 1, and the absence of him and Mathis (37 tackles, 9.5 sacks) would make life much easier for the quarterback. On the back end, a possibly depleted secondary will be trying to wash away the residue of last week's performance by Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall, who set a single-game NFL record with 21 receptions totaling 200 yards. Veteran corners Kelvin Hayden (27 tackles, 1 INT) and Tim Jennings (49 tackles, 2 INT) should see a great deal of action on Thursday, with safety support from Melvin Bullitt (74 tackles). Raheem Brock (24 tackles, 3.5 sacks), who had a sack last week, could be the team's best pass rusher if Freeney and Mathis are absent. The run-stopping group attempting to slow Jones-Drew, which ranks 17th in the league (110.4 yards per game), is led by linebacker Gary Brackett (84 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT) and tackles Daniel Muir (44 tackles) and Eric Foster (26 tackles).

FANTASY FOCUS

Here comes the dark side of selecting steady fantasy players like Manning, Addai, Wayne, and Clark in the draft. Although Caldwell claims the Colts will use their top personnel and play the game to win, there's just no guarantee. Moreover, if there is a big lead in this contest on either side, the motivation to use any and all of the above players will be lessened. So, while also noting that Indy put up only 14 points the last time these teams met, you'd be well-advised to use other options if you have them.

On the Jacksonville side, players like Jones-Drew and Sims-Walker remain solid plays, and if you own them, you'll be rooting for Caldwell to call off the dogs early. Even though the Colts could feature backups at some point in this contest, the Jaguars defense remains a risky play.

OVERALL ANALYSIS

OK, Jim Caldwell, we'll choose to believe you until you give us a reason not to. If the Colts indeed function as if this is a meaningful game, they're clearly a better team than the Jaguars, though Jacksonville should be fired up for this one no matter what, and has a history of playing Indianapolis tough. Jones-Drew should get enough done on the ground to keep the Jags in it, and though not the healthiest group, the Jacksonville defense has seen Indianapolis enough not to be too surprised by Manning's exploits. The guess here is that the game comes down to a couple of late possessions, and that Manning makes one more big play than Garrard when it matters. And if backup QB Curtis Painter enters this contest at any point before the fourth quarter, all bets are off on the above assessment.

Predicted Outcome: Colts 23, Jaguars 20.

December 15, 2009

With homefield advantage throughout the playoffs already locked up thanks to its 13-0 start, Indianapolis (13-0 straight up, 9-3-1 against the spread) will come to Alltel Stadium to face division-rival Jacksonville by the St. John?s River on Thursday night.

Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened the Colts as 6 ?-point favorites with a total of 46 ?. As of Tuesday, most books were refraining from releasing a number out of fear that Indy may rest starters like quarterback Peyton Manning.

Jim Caldwell?s team stayed perfect this past week and won its 22nd straight regular-season game by beating Denver 28-16 as a 6 ?-point home favorite. The Colts raced out to a 21-0 lead before giving up 16 unanswered points that put the Broncos in position to collect a backdoor cover. However, Manning led a 14-play, 80-yard drive that was capped by a one-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Clark with 2:25 left, allowing Indy backers to cash tickets.

Jacksonville (7-6 SU, 5-8 ATS) would be in the playoffs if the season ended today. Jack Del Rio?s team currently owns the tiebreaker over three other AFC squads ? the Jets, Dolphins and Ravens ? for the final slot in the jumbled-up AFC wild-card mix.

The Jags had won four of their last five games before dropping a 14-10 decision to Miami this past Sunday as 2 ?-point home favorites. The ?Fins dominated with a huge edge in first downs (22-10) and total offense (354-217), as the combination of Chad Henne and Ricky Williams outplayed David Garrard and Maurice Jones-Drew.

Garrard completed only 11-of-26 throws for 139 yards with zero TDs or interceptions. Jones-Drew rushed 18 times for 59 yards and one touchdown. Trailing by four with 1:26 left and the Jags facing a fourth-and-three from Miami?s 46, Garrard was stuffed on a quarterback draw.

The biggest question for gamblers in this game is the effort Caldwell?s bunch will put forth. Will Indy wait until next week to rest starters? Might Manning be yanked in favor of rookie Curtis Painter in the second half? Does DE Dwight Freeney get the night off?

If Caldwell?s stance on Monday doesn?t change, bettors should look for a 100-percent effort from the Colts. Caldwell told the Associated Press, "We're going to approach the 14th game exactly like we did one through 13. We've got a great rhythm in terms of our preparation and we're going to go out and play it just like we have done the previous 13."

Manning is enjoying another MVP-caliber campaign, completing 68.1 percent of his passes for 3,905 yards with a 29/14 touchdown-interception ratio. Wayne is Pro-Bowl bound again, hauling in 87 receptions for 1,078 yards and nine touchdowns. Clark has 82 catches for 902 yards and eight TDs.

Jones-Drew has rushed for 1,136 yards and 14 touchdowns, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. He also has 44 catches for 303 yards. Garrard has connected on 60.7 percent of his attempts for 2,987 yards with a 10/6 TD-INT ratio. Mike Sims-Walker has become Garrard?s favorite target, bringing down 53 receptions for 758 yards and six TDs.

Jacksonville has been a home underdog twice this season, winning outright over Tennessee and Houston in both instances. However, the Jags are just 2-5 ATS at home despite winning five of their seven games. After hosting the Colts, Del Rio?s team will finish the regular season with road games at New England (12/27) and at Cleveland (1/3).

Indy owns an incredible 6-0 record both SU and ATS on the road this year.

When these teams met on Sept. 13 in Indy, the Colts collected a 14-12 win but the Jags covered as 6 ?-point road underdogs. Jones-Drew ran for 97 yards and one touchdown, while Manning threw for 301 yards, including a 35-yard scoring strike to Reggie Wayne for a 14-6 lead midway through the third quarter.

Early in the final stanza, Jones-Drew responded with a seven-yard scamper to paydirt, but the Jags? two-point conversion failed when the UCLA product was stuffed on a running play out of the Wildcat formation.

The ?under? has cashed in four consecutive Jacksonville games. For the season, the Jags have seen the ?under? go 7-6 overall, but the ?over? is 4-3 in their home games.

The ?under? is 7-6 overall for the Colts, 3-3 in their road assignments.

The NFL Network will have television coverage for Thursday?s 8:20 p.m. Eastern kickoff.

--The ?over? is 3-1 in the last four Jags-Colts? head-to-head meetings. The Jags are 3-1 ATS in those four encounters.

--Jacksonville was missing a pair of starters ? DT John Henderson and CB Rashean Mathis ? in last week?s loss to the ?Fins. Bettors should check the status of these players later in the week.

--Philadelphia rookie WR Jeremy Maclin is expected to miss the next 1-2 games, but veteran Kevin Curtis is now healthy and likely to play this week vs. San Francisco.

--Arizona WR Larry Fitzgerald had an MRI on his knee Tuesday, but the Cardinals expect him to play this week at Detroit.

--The ?under? is an NFL-best 9-4 for the Bears, Broncos, Texans and Cardinals.

--If I had an NFL MVP vote, it would look like this:
1-Drew Brees (New Orleans)
2-Peyton Manning (Indianapolis)
3-Chris Johnson (Tennessee)
4-Jared Allen (Minnesota)
5-Brett Favre (Minnesota)

--Coach of the Year:
1-Sean Payton (Saints
2-Marvin Lewis (Bengals)
3-Jim Caldwell (Colts)
4-Josh McDaniels (Broncos)
5-Jack Del Rio (Jags)

--Hot Seats:
1-Wade Phillips (Dallas)
2-Eric Mangini (Cleveland)
3-Tom Cable (Oakland)
4-Jim Zorn (Washington)
5-Gary Kubiak (Houston)
6-John Fox (Carolina)

Colts' sackmasters Freeney and Mathis miss practice

Indianapolis Colts defensive ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis missed practice on Tuesday, according to the team's website. The two players have combined for 21 of the team?s 30 sacks this season.

Freeney, who is nursing an abdomen injury, has recorded a sack in each of his last two games. The 11th overall pick of the 2002 draft, Freeney leads the team with 11.5 sacks this season.

Mathis, who is dealing with a nagging quad injury, has recorded 37 tackles and 9.5 sacks in 13 games this year.

Colts head coach Jim Caldwell said on Monday that healthy players will play in the Thursday night game against the Jaguars despite having locked up home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

A total of 10 players missed Tuesday?s practice including notables such as running back Donald Brown and safety Antoine Bethea.

It would be wise to check Wednesday?s practice report before assuming any of these players will be out for the game on Thursday.

Most offshore books waited until Tuesday to release a line on the game because of the uncertainty of the Colts starters. Shops that are currently offering the game have Indy listed as a 3-point favorite with a total of 41.5.

Colts at Jaguars

Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville Jaguars (+3, 42)

The Indianapolis Colts (13-0) have locked up the division title, a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Jacksonville (7-6) controls its own playoff destiny. If the Jaguars win out they?ll make the playoffs because they hold tiebreaker edges on the rest of the 7-6 AFC teams. A Jags? loss and their playoff hopes are just about over.

Drawing the line

With all the uncertainty about the Colts? plans, even the offshore books were afraid to post a number here. Convinced that the Colts' starters will play, they finally listed Indy as a 3-point favorite with the total of 42.

Weather

The forecast calls for scattered showers with temperatures in the lower 60s.

Rest vs. Rust

Indy coach Jim Caldwell has said that Peyton Manning and Co. will play the entire game.

"We're going to approach the 14th game exactly as we did [games] 1 to 13," Caldwell said. "We're going to go out and play just like we have done the previous 13."

Should we believe him? If the Colts started resting their stars now, they wouldn?t play a meaningful game for 34 or 35 days and first-year coach Caldwell knows that?s too long. Look for Manning, Reggie Wayne and Joseph Addai to begin their vacations next week against Jets.

The only disturbing statement in the entire matter was made by Manning himself, who said he hoped the coaching staff didn?t announce its game plans publically as it has in the past.
Still, all signs point to Manning going the distance here especially since he no longer has Jim Sorgi to back him up. Sorgi was put on IR a week ago leaving rookie Curtis Painter as Manning's back-up and he has not played all season.

The Marshall Plan?

Jacksonville wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker, who was listed as doubtful last week with a calf injury but still played the entire game, practiced fully for the first time in weeks on Tuesday. MSW was a non-factor in the team?s first meeting but has since become the leading wideout for the Jags with 53 catches, 758 yards and six TDS.

Sims-Walker has struggled mightily the past two weeks. He has just two catches despite being targeted 16 times in that span. He?s still the only Jag receiver with the size and speed to take advantage of a Colts secondary that watched Denver's Brandon Marshall catch a record 21 balls in last week's game.
Jags in disarray

The Jaguars may be gunning for a playoff berth but they sure aren't sharp. Last week the Jags had 12 men on the field twice and on a crucial fourth-down play in the fourth quarter they had only 10 men on offense. When Miami safety Yeremiah Bell realized he didn't have a receiver to cover because the Jaguars were short a player he freelanced and knocked down a pass to Sims-Walker that ended the drive at the Dolphins 45.

Colts-Jags part deux

Manning threw for 301 yards as Indy edged Jacksonville 14-12 in Week 1 as the road team covered for the fifth straight time in the series.

The Jaguars have given up 20 TD passes on the season and have just 14 sacks and that should mean that Manning, who leads the NFL with 3,905 passing yards will have a lot of time to throw.

Maurice Jones-Drew rushed for 97 yards on 21 carries in the opener and should get a ton of touches in this one. He has scored 14 of the Jags? 27 TDs.

Injury report

One thing?s for sure, anyone seriously injured for the Colts won?t play for the rest of the regular season. That should eliminate back-up running back Donald Brown, who?s been sidelined for several weeks with a chest injury.

Joseph Addai is not 100 percent but will play. Mike Hart will also get some carries.

DEs Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis are questionable and were among 10 players who did not participate in practice on Tuesday.

Jacksonville will be without fullback Greg Lewis (ankle). Montell Owens is expected to start. Cornerback Rashean Mathis is also questionable with a groin injury.

Short week, no problem

The Colts have played four games on Thursday after playing the previous Sunday and won them all. They?ve also scored at least 31 points in each of the games including a 31-24 win at Jacksonville last year.

Trend-setting

The Colts have won 13 of 17 in this series. They are 6-0-1 ATS in their last seven Thursday games.

Indianapolis is the best team in the NFL against the spread. The Colts are 9-3-1 against the number while the Jaguars are one of the worst at 5-8.

Jacksonville has scored less the 20 points eight times this year and is averaging a woeful 9.2 points in losses.

The over is 6-2 in the last eight meetings in Jacksonville.

Colts' perfect quest may fall to backup QB Painter

Colts' perfect quest may fall to backup QB Painter

Colts' perfect quest may fall to backup QB Painter

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -Curtis Painter has lived his NFL life in obscurity - like most of Peyton Manning's backups.

He's taken more questions than snaps this season, and spent more time learning the complexities of the Indianapolis offense than demonstrating his skills.

Those days may be about to end.

With Indy locking up the AFC South title, a first-round bye and home-field advantage in the playoffs, Manning's playing time will likely be reduced over the next three weeks, putting Painter in the spotlight as the Colts pursue perfection.

``I won't put any added pressure on myself,'' Painter said Tuesday. ``I don't think anything is going to change. But if I go in, I'm going to be expected to play at a high level.''

It's a standard philosophy for unbeaten Indy (13-0), which has proved the mantra ``next man up'' can work.

Safety Melvin Bullitt has played the best football of his three-year career, replacing 2007 NFL defensive player of the year Bob Sanders.

When projected starter Anthony Gonzalez went down with a knee injury in the first quarter of Indy's season-opener, the Colts turned to rookie Austin Collie, whose 50 receptions are No. 3 on the team, and second-year receiver Pierre Garcon, who needs 251 yards to reach 1,000.

Rookie cornerbacks Jerraud Powers and Jacob Lacey rank fifth and sixth on the team in tackles after filling in for injured Kelvin Hayden and Marlin Jackson, and linebacker Philip Wheeler has done a reasonable job replacing Tyjuan Hagler, also sidelined with an injury.

But replacing Manning?

The three-time MVP has never missed a start in his 12-year career, a streak of 189 regular-season games and 15 in the postseason, and he's not likely to miss one this year, either. Coach Jim Caldwell announced this week that ``healthy'' starters would play Thursday night at Jacksonville, though he hasn't said whether they'll be on a play count.

If the Colts follow past trends, Manning will play briefly in the final two games before being lifted.

That would make Painter the first rookie quarterback to enter a Colts game since Jim Sorgi in 2004.

No, it's not the way Indy scripted it, but when Sorgi hurt his throwing shoulder in practice a month ago, Indy went to Plan B.

Painter was elevated to No. 2.

When Sorgi went on season-ending injured reserve last season, Painter was the only other active quarterback on Indy's roster.

``It's never good going on IR this time of year,'' Sorgi said dejectedly Thursday. ``You got through the whole season and this is my time. But I've still got a job to do.''

His task: Helping Painter, the former Purdue starter and Indiana native, prepare for his NFL debut - whether it's this week at Jacksonville or next week in Lucas Oil Stadium against the Jets.

The longtime backup to Manning insists he can be an asset, and Painter will take all the help he can get.

``Simply having him on the sideline, whether it's practice or games is valuable for me,'' Painter said. ``He can explain what he's doing, why he's doing it, he helps me out a lot.''

So will Painter be effective when he finally makes it onto the field?

He hasn't taken a game day snap since the preseason. And while he has impressed coaches in practice and meetings, the real test will come when he starts throwing passes.

``He has certainly come along from a conceptual standpoint. He's spent a lot of time in the meeting room, preparing for each game,'' Caldwell said. ``His grasp (of the offense) is improving, but the thing that's missing is his opportunity on the field. Until that happens, I wouldn't be able to give you a full sort of review on his progress.''

The challenge isn't just filling in for Manning.

It's producing the expected results.

Painter will be asked to win games, keeping the Colts' 22-game winning streak and undefeated season intact, things few - if any - rookie quarterbacks have ever been asked to do.

``I'm confident,'' Painter said. ``Each week, you get better and continue to learn more. You never know when it (playing) is going to happen. But there's not a whole lot of difference in preparation. You always prepare like you're going to play.''

Caldwell: 'Healthy' Colts will play against Jags

Caldwell: 'Healthy' Colts will play against Jags

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -Indianapolis coach Jim Caldwell has an answer for starters who want to play the final three games: Be ready to go Thursday night at Jacksonville.

The announcement came one day after three-time MVP Peyton Manning lobbied publicly to play against the division rival Jaguars. Last week, three-time Pro Bowl receiver Reggie Wayne also said he wanted to play the final three games even if the Colts clinched home-field advantage, which they wrapped up with Sunday's win.

For weeks, the biggest question in Indy has been whether the Colts will play or rest starters once playoff seeding was locked up.

Caldwell said ``healthy'' starters would play Thursday. He plans to revisit the debate for each of the final two games.

Colts keep 6 players out of practice with injuries

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -Pro Bowl defensive ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis have missed the Indianapolis Colts' practice, making them uncertain for Thursday's game at Jacksonville.

Colts coach Jim Caldwell has said his ``healthy'' starters will play.

But Freeney (abdomen) and Mathis (quadriceps) were among a half-dozen players who missed Tuesday's practice after playing Sunday. The others were cornerback Jerraud Powers (left hamstring), safety Antoine Bethea (foot), defensive lineman Eric Foster (back) and left tackle Charlie Johnson (foot).

The other four who missed practice - receiver Anthony Gonzalez (knee), kicker Adam Vinatieri (knee), running back Donald Brown (chest) and safety Aaron Francisco (ankle) - did not play Sunday.

Despite loss, Jaguars still control playoff fate

Despite loss, Jaguars still control playoff fate

Despite loss, Jaguars still control playoff fate

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -Despite a 14-10 loss to Miami, the Jacksonville Jaguars still control their postseason fate.

It might only last a few more days.

The Jaguars (7-6) need to upset unbeaten Indianapolis on Thursday night to stay in command of the AFC's final wild-card spot. If not, Jacksonville would need help over the final two weeks to avoid missing the postseason for the eighth time in the last 10 seasons.

``It's the playoffs for us,'' guard Uche Nwaneri said Monday. ``We're in a great situation to still have a hold on what can happen.''

Players thought otherwise Sunday. After the Dolphins snapped Jacksonville's five-game winning streak at home, the Jaguars believed they no longer had a grip on the wild-card spot. But the league confirmed Sunday evening that there's no scenario in which Jacksonville would miss the playoffs if it wins three in a row.

Jacksonville has the same record as Miami, Baltimore and the New York Jets, but the Jaguars have a better conference record than each of them. Even though the Dolphins would win a head-to-head tiebreaker against Jacksonville, if both clubs win their remaining games, Miami would clinch the AFC East and not be involved in any wild-card scenarios.

``We know that we have to win out,'' Nwaneri said. ``That's really the only way to ensure that we'll be in the playoffs. You don't want to leave it to needing to win this and hope these people lose or these people lose. We control our own fate. We still have that fortunately. It's going to be a tough, three-game season. But this is what you play football for, for opportunities to force yourself into the playoffs.''

The Jaguars have lost seven of the last nine meetings with the Colts, who insist they will approach Thursday's game the same way they did the previous 13. So quarterback Peyton Manning, receiver Reggie Wayne and defensive end Dwight Freeney - guys who have given Jacksonville fits in recent years - are expected to play the whole way.

Players said Monday they would prefer to play the Colts at full strength, even though the AFC South champions hold NFL records for consecutive regular-season wins (22) and wins in a decade (114).

``It's not really about them,'' tight end Marcedes Lewis said. ``It's about us and getting back on track. We're anxious to get out there and get this taste out of our mouth. This year, we've been good at bouncing back.''

The Jaguars have rebounded from their last four losses with victories. But those came against Houston (twice), St. Louis and Kansas City. They have considerably less time to regroup from this one, although players said that could be a good thing.

``You can't really get too high or too low because three days later you're playing again,'' Nwaneri said. ``That's going to help. We don't even have the luxury of feeling disappointment after that game for too long. We have to turn around quick. That's going to help get it out of our minds.''

Offensive players would like to forget Sunday's performance.

David Garrard completed just 11 passes and was sacked three times. Maurice Jones-Drew was held to 59 yards rushing on 18 carries. And no receiver caught more than two balls. The offense's lone highlight was a 63-yard completion to Torry Holt on a third-and-13 play in the third quarter. Even then, the Jaguars responded with a delay of game penalty and had to settle for a field goal.

Jacksonville finished with just 217 yards.

``Whenever you stumble like that, our attention to detail is just not good,'' Lewis said. ``It's on us as an offense. The defense went out there and played its heart out. It's on us to go out there and win the game when it's on the line.''

With the offense sputtering, coach Jack Del Rio gambled three times on fourth down in the fourth quarter, hoping to spark a game-winning drive. The Jaguars came up short on the last two, both fourth-and-3 plays.

Jacksonville had just 10 players on the field for the first one, and Garrard's pass to Mike Sims-Walker got batted away.

``That should never happen,'' Lewis said. ``As an offense, we're embarrassed that did happen. Extra point, third down, second down, it doesn't matter. I don't even know how it happened, but we can't have things like that happen, especially when a game's on the line.''

Colts will be serious vs. Jaguars

Colts will be serious vs. Jaguars
December 16, 2009

Peyton wants to play. Reggie wants to play. In a game that has no playoff meaning to the Indianapolis Colts, the starters want to be on the field Thursday night against Jacksonville.

That might not be so good for the Jags.

Indy's eyes are on the prize awarded in Miami on Feb. 7, but there's still plenty of pride running through the roster for the regular season. An undefeated record remains on the horizon, even if it's eclipsed - rightfully so - by the quest to win a second Super Bowl in four seasons.

Just how much the regulars are in action is up to coach Jim Caldwell and his staff. But don't think Manning, Wayne, Dwight Freeney and the guys wouldn't like to surpass what the Patriots achieved in 2007 by going 16-0, then sweeping through the playoffs and actually winning the championship.

Although the Colts have no responsibilities toward other NFL teams, if they stay serious in Jacksonville, it helps playoff contenders like Miami, Denver, Baltimore and the New York Jets, who don't want the Jags getting a gimme.

The Colts are nothing close to a gimme with their true lineup participating, even for less than a full game. The oddsmakers didn't put a line on the game because of the uncertainty surrounding who will play for Indy.

COLTS, 21-17

BEST BET: Broncos pretty much can salt away a playoff berth. How sweet would that be against Oakland?

BRONCOS, 30-10

Impossible to figure what's happened to Steelers.

UPSET SPECIAL: PACKERS, 21-20

Saints could clinch NFC home-field advantage against the December flops.

SAINTS, 28-22

Winner clinches division. Chargers have won eight in a row and haven't lost in December since 2005.

CHARGERS, 24-21

Vikings get the NFC North crown with a win.

VIKINGS, 27-10

Titans think they still have a shot at the playoffs. Dolphins know they have a shot.

DOLPHINS, 17-16

With all their troubles, the Patriots still can handle Buffalo.

PATRIOTS, 20-10

Niners showed their mettle against NFC West leader. Can they do so against NFC East leader? Not quite.

EAGLES, 23-14

Defenses might have to score in this one.

JETS, 13-10

Here's a team Giants can get stingy against. If not, they can kiss postseason goodbye.

GIANTS, 20-9

After Monday night's embarrassment, Cardinals need a patsy.

CARDINALS, 31-13

Ravens still thinking wild card.

RAVENS, 17-10

Bucs seem destined to finish 1-15.

SEAHAWKS, 20-3

Rams seem destined to finish 1-15, too.

TEXANS, 27-7

Browns showing something on defense, Chiefs can't protect Matt Cassel.

BROWNS, 12-7

---

RECORD:

Versus spread, 6-8 (88-105-2 season); Straight up, 12-4 (138-60 season)

Best Bet: 6-8

Upset Special: 9-5
