Patriots have big problems

Former Colts head coach Tony Dungy never made any secret of his intentions in regards to playing time for starters if his team secured the highest playoff seeding and was undefeated.

The stoic Dungy never wavered from his ideology that did not place an emphasis on personal or team records. If a regular season game had no playoff implication, Dungy would sit starters to avoid unnecessary injury.

Indianapolis clinched home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with a win over the Titans on Sunday and now rookie head coach Jim Caldwell faces the same dilemma.

Caldwell said on Monday that the Colts are going to ?play ball?, but didn?t specifically address the topic of starters playing the entire game.

"We're going to approach the 14th game exactly like we did 1 through 13,? said Caldwell. ?We're going to look at this game and prepare just as hard. We've got a great rhythm in terms of our preparation and we're going to go out and play just like we have done in the previous 13.?

The Colts face the Jaguars in Jacksonville on Thursday and the majority of offshore books have not released a line on the game due to the uncertainty of playing time for starters like Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark and Joseph Addai.

Pete Korner, founder of the Sports Club in Las Vegas, said they released a spread of 7-even to its members with a total of 43. Korner was quick to mention that their number was based on the assumption the team?s starters would be playing.

?It?s a major adjustment if they have multiple starters out,? he said. ?We think it?s a legitimate 7, but if they?re resting starters like Manning this could go down to a pick or even Jacksonville favored because they need the game.?

Korner also pointed out that Indianapolis continues to be a ?play against? team among bettors despite accruing a 9-3-1 against the spread record this year.

?Even though these guys have a winning streak going, the play is against them,? said Korner. ?They?ve had some close calls, including this last weekend, but the plays have been against them.?

The Saints will be the second team afforded the opportunity to clinch home-field advantage throughout the playoffs when they face the Cowboys in the season?s first Saturday night showdown.

If New Orleans defeats Dallas, and the Vikings lose to the Panthers on Sunday, the Saints would secure playoff games at the Superdome until the Super Bowl.

?We are well aware that the Saints have played a lot of close games recently, they are just asking to lose,? stated Korner, who sent out a spread of 7 in favor of the Saints with a total of 51. ?But we want to be high on the favorites and try to avoid underdog money.?

The Cowboys are 19-36 since 1997 in games after November and didn?t look like a playoff team in the loss Sunday to San Diego. When asked if he could see the line growing higher than the key number because of Dallas? recent inefficiencies, Korner did not believe it would.

?The Saints play of late has prohibited a line like this one from running,? he said. ?We know that Dallas is a highly visible team and they have their certain followers that just won?t let their numbers go to certain areas.?

Another team that hasn?t played up to par in recent weeks is New England. The Dolphins and Jets are nipping at their heels in the AFC East, both lurking one game behind the Pats.

Randy Moss looked like his old self on Sunday, taking plays off and not running routes with precision. Tom Brady?s lingering injuries, Bill Belichick?s scrutinized fourth-down and tardiness decisions and Moss?s attitude have Patriots backers thinking twice before laying large numbers.

The Sports Club installed the Bills as an 8-point underdog against the Patriots although most shops are currently offering a 7-point spread.

?New England is obviously not the powerhouse they were two years ago,? Korner said. ?I could see the line coming down before it goes up.?

While Buffalo is clearly not an offensive juggernaut, the opening total of 41 seems strangely low for a game involving the Patriots.

?If there is bad weather in Buffalo and it?s windy, then scoring becomes very tough so 8 points could be a lot,? added Korner. ?I think movement will be predicated on the weather. If it?s clear, I think New England could open this up, but if it?s cold, windy and snowy I think the play will be on the Bills.?

Other Week 15 NFL lines: Green Bay Packers at Pittsburgh Steelers (-1); Chicago Bears at Baltimore Ravens (-10); Cleveland Browns at Kansas City Chiefs (-1); Cincinnati Bengals at San Diego Chargers (-7); Oakland Raiders at Denver Broncos (-11.5); Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Seattle Seahawks (-7); Minnesota Vikings at Carolina Panthers (+7); New York Giants at Washington Redskins (+3).

Pointspreads for the Dolphins-Titans, Cardinals-Lions, 49ers-Eagles, Falcons-Jets and Texans-Rams games have not been released as of Monday.

GRIESE TO SAINTS: LOSE -- Former Miami Dolphins quarterback Bob Griese has some advice for the New Orleans Saints (13-0) as they pursue perfection.

"Lose a game before the end of the season," he said. "Your team will go into the playoffs and have the best chance of winning because that monkey won't be on their back."

And, if the Saints and Indianapolis Colts (13-0) do each lose a game, Griese and his former teammates on the 1972 Dolphins probably will break open a bottle of bubbly and continue to celebrate the fact they're the only unbeaten team in NFL history.

TIGER TALK -- In the wake of the Tiger Woods scandal, several professional athletes have expressed support for the world's best golfer. Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis said Woods is "being treated unfair" and joked he "needed to be congratulated" for his ability to keep so many affairs hidden.

"If he could keep that a secret and ain't nobody came out and told (on him), hey, congratulate him," he said. "You know, most of the time there's one or two, and you can't keep that a secret. So if he can balance 14 and keep it a secret, congrats.

"You know, at least he knows what he wants. He don't discriminate, he's not against people, he don't care what your job, what your background is. ... He knew what he was after."

Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas said people shouldn't be so surprised about Woods' behavior.

"Man, I don't know why everybody's sitting around here like it's something new," he said. "Tiger Woods is Tiger Woods! It's not like he looks like Seal. It's not like he's not going to have a whole bunch of women. He's Tiger Woods! I'm surprised 400 girls didn't come out. ... Did you think no women were going to come out? I was expecting at least 25 by the end of this week."

Besides saying "Tiger Woods" about as many times as NBA star Allen Iverson said "practice" in his famous rant, Arenas went out of line when he ripped Seal, who, regardless of his looks, is married to supermodel Heidi Klum.

With a big win over Denver on Sunday, the Indianapolis Colts clinched home-field advantage throughout the playoffs and, in doing so, kicked off some real uncertainty in sports betting circles. Setting those Week 15 NFL betting lines could prove to be challenging?

How hard will the 13-0 Colts attempt to win their last three games? Will they go for a perfect season? Or, will they rest their starters?

"We're going to approach it like we do any other game," said Indianapolis coach Jim Caldwell on his plans for Thursday?s contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars. (Not that I trust what coaches tell the media. Nor should you.)

The crucial Indy player to rest or not to rest, of course, is quarterback Peyton Manning, who?s thrown 13 touchdown passes in his last five games. Coincidence that the Colts haven?t lost a game against the point spread over those five games? Probably not. A big key to beating the number as a big favorite, as Indianapolis often finds itself, is converting in the red zone, and let?s just say Colts kicker Matt Stover hasn?t attempted too many field goals in recent weeks.

"We'll do whatever coach Caldwell wants us to do, but I haven't spoken with him," Manning said. "I'd like to play against Jacksonville, being that it's Jacksonville, it's a division team, it is a short week and we've got to get ready to play."

Bodog?s players have been cashing in big time on Indianapolis, but it?ll be interesting to see if the specter of rookie Curtis Painter at quarterback will change betters? outlooks.

More betting news and notes from around the NFL:

Another team our players won nicely on last week is Minnesota. The Vikings head to Carolina on Sunday as 7-point favorites to play a Panthers team that just covered a big spread in New England. Carolina has a decent defense, particularly against the pass ? just ask Randy Moss ? but whether it?s Jake Delhomme or Matt Moore at quarterback, scoring points on offense has been a problem.

A team many of our players are getting a little tired of is New Orleans. Even though the Saints have yet to lose, they?ve failed to cover five of their last seven point spreads. New Orleans hosts Dallas on Saturday and is a modest 7-point favorite over a Cowboys side that?s fighting for its playoff life. Of note, the Saints have yet to win by fewer than eight at home this season.

We expect a good amount of action on the Packers (pick) on the road in Pittsburgh this Sunday. Green Bay has finally figured out how to protect Aaron Rodgers, and the Steelers? playoff hopes are just about done.

Trend Setters - Week 15

Trend Setters - Week 15

Trend Setters - Week 15
December 16, 2009

It's never easy handicapping the NFL with favorites and underdogs fluctuating on a weekly basis. The 'chalk' went 10-6 ATS last week following a 6-10 ATS mark by favorites in Week 12. The time is here to dissect the top trends for Week 15, including the Patriots heading to Orchard Park.

Patriots (-7, 40 ?) at Bills - 1:00 PM EST

New England looks for its first win outside of Foxboro in the continental United States this Sunday, traveling to Buffalo to battle the Bills. The Patriots own a one-game lead in the AFC East over both the Dolphins and Jets with three games to go. Buffalo is trying to salvage a lost season, winning two of its last three to improve to 5-8.

The Bills have not had much luck with the Patriots since Bill Belichick took over the reins in New England. Buffalo is 3-9 ATS and 0-12 SU the last 12 meetings with New England, including an 0-5 SU/ATS mark the last five at home in this series. The Bills haven't responded well at home off a road victory, compiling a 2-5 ATS mark since 2006.

Despite falling at Miami two weeks ago, the Pats own an 8-1 ATS record the last nine as road favorites of four points or more against division foes. New England has slumped recently on the offensive end, scoring 21 points or less in three straight games. This is actually a good thing for Pats' backers this Sunday, as New England is 4-1 ATS under Belichick coming off three consecutive contests tallying less than 21 points.

Falcons at Jets (-5) - 1:00 PM EST

Atlanta has completely fallen apart at the seams, dropping four of five, with the lone victory coming over the 1-12 Buccaneers. The Falcons need a miracle to get in the NFC playoffs, while Matt Ryan and Michael Turner are still banged-up. The Jets, meanwhile, have quietly snuck back into the AFC Wild Card chase, tied with the Dolphins, Jaguars, and Ravens at 7-6.

New York has succeeded at home against NFC opponents, putting together a 7-3 ATS mark since 2004. In the same span, the Jets have struggled in December as a favorite, owning a 3-7 ATS ledger.

The Falcons have lost two straight, but that has not stopped Mike Smith's team from cashing. Atlanta is 9-2 ATS off a SU defeat in the Smith tenure, and 11-2 ATS since December 2007. The Falcons own a perfect 7-0 ATS mark in December as underdogs off a SU loss against an opponent off a double-digit SU win.

49ers at Eagles (-8 ?, 42 ?) - 1:00 PM EST

Both these teams are coming off division victories, as the Niners and Eagles hook up in Philadelphia. San Francisco knocked off Arizona for the second time this season on Monday Night, but the Niners are still on the outside looking in the playoff race at 6-7. The Eagles control their own destiny inside the NFC East, owning a 9-4 record after holding off the Giants on Sunday night.

Mike Singletary has been straight money as an underdog since taking over in San Francisco last November. The Niners are 8-1-2 ATS when receiving points, including a 5-1-2 ATS mark as road 'dogs. San Francisco possesses a 4-0 ATS ledger under "Samurai Mike" off a SU win as an underdog.

The Eagles will likely not have a letdown this week, as Philadelphia brings a 10-1 ATS mark the last 11 games following a road divisional contest. December has been a solid month for Andy Reid's squad, with the Eagles going 7-2 ATS the last nine games in the season's final month.

Bears at Ravens (-11, 40 ?) - 1:00 PM EST

Baltimore bounced back nicely from a Monday Night setback at Green Bay by drilling Detroit, as the Ravens are right in the thick of the AFC Wild Card race. The Bears, meanwhile, have been a huge disappointment in Jay Cutler's first season as quarterback in the Windy City, sitting at 5-8.

Chicago is very unappealing against the number, especially as an underdog. The Bears have failed to cover eight of their last nine games, including a 1-6 ATS record as a 'dog. Lovie Smith's team isn't scoring points, but isn't playing too bad defensively, either. Chicago has finished 'under' the total in five straight games.

The Ravens own a terrific record as a favorite under John Harbaugh, cashing on nine of 12 occasions. Baltimore easily covered in last week's blowout of Detroit, and that situation sets up nicely. The Ravens are 7-4 ATS in Harbaurgh's tenure off a SU/ATS win.

Texans (-10, 43) at Rams - 1:00 PM EST

This isn't exactly the most attractive matchup on the board, but if you can bet on it, mine as well give it a look. Houston snapped a four-game skid with a thrashing of Seattle last Sunday to improve to 6-7. St. Louis continues to have a miserable season, falling 47-7 at Tennessee to drop to 1-12.

How bad has the last two-plus years been for the Rams? Sunday's game against the Texans will mark the 35th consecutive game St. Louis will be listed as an underdog. The Rams are 14-20 ATS in this span, hitting at a 41% clip. St. Louis is just 6-15 ATS the last 21 games as a home 'dog and 1-5 ATS the last six at home against AFC opponents.

The Texans have struggled in the role of a road team off a home victory, going 5-15 ATS in franchise history. Houston is 1-1 in this situation in '09, losing at Arizona, but they did beat Buffalo. Gary Kubiak's team has done well at home in December, but on the road has been a different story, compiling a 1-5 ATS mark the last six.

Colts will be serious vs. Jaguars

Colts will be serious vs. Jaguars

Colts will be serious vs. Jaguars
December 16, 2009

Peyton wants to play. Reggie wants to play. In a game that has no playoff meaning to the Indianapolis Colts, the starters want to be on the field Thursday night against Jacksonville.

That might not be so good for the Jags.

Indy's eyes are on the prize awarded in Miami on Feb. 7, but there's still plenty of pride running through the roster for the regular season. An undefeated record remains on the horizon, even if it's eclipsed - rightfully so - by the quest to win a second Super Bowl in four seasons.

Just how much the regulars are in action is up to coach Jim Caldwell and his staff. But don't think Manning, Wayne, Dwight Freeney and the guys wouldn't like to surpass what the Patriots achieved in 2007 by going 16-0, then sweeping through the playoffs and actually winning the championship.

Although the Colts have no responsibilities toward other NFL teams, if they stay serious in Jacksonville, it helps playoff contenders like Miami, Denver, Baltimore and the New York Jets, who don't want the Jags getting a gimme.

The Colts are nothing close to a gimme with their true lineup participating, even for less than a full game. The oddsmakers didn't put a line on the game because of the uncertainty surrounding who will play for Indy.

COLTS, 21-17

BEST BET: Broncos pretty much can salt away a playoff berth. How sweet would that be against Oakland?

BRONCOS, 30-10

Impossible to figure what's happened to Steelers.

UPSET SPECIAL: PACKERS, 21-20

Saints could clinch NFC home-field advantage against the December flops.

SAINTS, 28-22

Winner clinches division. Chargers have won eight in a row and haven't lost in December since 2005.

CHARGERS, 24-21

Vikings get the NFC North crown with a win.

VIKINGS, 27-10

Titans think they still have a shot at the playoffs. Dolphins know they have a shot.

DOLPHINS, 17-16

With all their troubles, the Patriots still can handle Buffalo.

PATRIOTS, 20-10

Niners showed their mettle against NFC West leader. Can they do so against NFC East leader? Not quite.

EAGLES, 23-14

Defenses might have to score in this one.

JETS, 13-10

Here's a team Giants can get stingy against. If not, they can kiss postseason goodbye.

GIANTS, 20-9

After Monday night's embarrassment, Cardinals need a patsy.

CARDINALS, 31-13

Ravens still thinking wild card.

RAVENS, 17-10

Bucs seem destined to finish 1-15.

SEAHAWKS, 20-3

Rams seem destined to finish 1-15, too.

TEXANS, 27-7

Browns showing something on defense, Chiefs can't protect Matt Cassel.

BROWNS, 12-7

---

RECORD:

Versus spread, 6-8 (88-105-2 season); Straight up, 12-4 (138-60 season)

Best Bet: 6-8

Upset Special: 9-5

Steelers stumbling but could be set to regroup
Almost everything Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says carries an authoritative tone. Tomlin is a confident leader, and when he talks, his words resonate.

Lately, though, Tomlin has been full of hot air and empty threats. He said the Steelers would "unleash hell" after a loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Nov. 29.

What followed was a hell of a disaster -- back-to-back losses to the lowly Oakland Raiders and Cleveland Browns. The defending Super Bowl champs are on a five-game losing streak, turned into chumps by some of the NFL's worst teams.

Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been sacked so many times, he might be safer riding a motorcycle than dropping back to pass. And the Steelers' junkyard-dog defense lost its teeth when safety Troy Polamalu went down to injury.

Polamalu won't play again Sunday when Pittsburgh (6-7) hosts the playoff-bound Green Bay Packers (9-4). The Steelers are 2-point home favorites, and it's questionable whether they should be favored.

Conventional wisdom is the Packers' Aaron Rodgers, an accurate passer with 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions, will cut up the Polamalu-less Pittsburgh secondary. That probably will happen, too. But Rodgers has been sacked 48 times, 10 more than Roethlisberger.

This might be the week when the Steelers regroup and show some fight. Tomlin has a veteran team that's unlikely to throw in the towel in terrible times.

Wide receiver Hines Ward called Pittsburgh's pitiful free fall "embarrassing," and it's clear the Steelers are desperate to find a way to stop their losing streak.

Rarely do you see Pittsburgh lay less than a field goal at home, so the line is appealing, and the timing might be right.

The Packers are on a roll, winning five in a row, but they also are playing on the road for the second consecutive week. The NFC is strong at the top but soft in the middle, and Green Bay is in a position where it can lose and still be in good shape for the postseason.

With Tomlin facing adversity and his team backed into a corner, I'll take a shot and bet on the Steelers to win for a change.

Four more plays for Week 15 (Home team in CAPS):

? SAINTS (-7) over Cowboys: Dallas could be missing top pass rusher DeMarcus Ware because of a sprained neck, and that would make things easier on Drew Brees. In the last meeting between these teams, in December 2006, Brees passed for 384 yards and five touchdowns in New Orleans' 42-17 win. Cowboys coach Wade Phillips has lost six straight against the spread on the road in December. The Saints have been playing with fire in recent narrow victories, but they did blow out New England and the New York Giants at home.

? BILLS (+7) over Patriots: It could be that Tom Brady is ready to bust loose and New England is primed for a late-season rally. But that perception of the Patriots might not be reality. Bill Belichick, 0-5 straight up in true road games this season, has not found many answers since New England's lucky season-opening win over the Bills. Look for an improved Buffalo defense to keep it close.

? Bears (+11) over RAVENS: The outlook is bleak for the Bears, who are thin on defense and incapable of overcoming Jay Cutler's interceptions. But Baltimore is unreliable as a double-digit favorite. Expect the Ravens to run Ray Rice and win a low-scoring game in the cold and snow.

? REDSKINS (+3) over Giants: Washington, which has covered five straight games, should have upset the Saints two weeks ago. The Redskins are showing obvious improvement. The Giants still are crippled by a weak defense and Eli Manning's errors. The home underdog will be motivated to hurt the Giants' playoff hopes Monday night.

Last week: 3-2 against the spread

Season: 33-35-2

Time: 5:20 p.m. Line: Saints -7 Total: 53?
TV: NFL (317) RADIO: KBAD-AM (920)
Facts: Three teams have put up their season yardage highs against New Orleans: Eagles (463), Rams (434) and Redskins (455). The Saints? average yield of 371 yard since their Week 5 bye would rank them sixth worst over the course of a season. ... Dallas leads the series 14-8 but has lost five in a row, its longest current skid against any team. ... In two prime-time home games this year, New Orleans? Drew Brees has thrown for seven TDs and 679 yards, with one interception.
Analysis: The Cowboys? offensive line will have a solid size advantage against the Saints? 4-3 and could dominate possession. That alignment is a key, because Dallas is 1-3 against 3-4s, averaging 11 points in those losses and beating only K.C.
Forecast: Cowboys 38, Saints 31

SUNDAY?S GAMES

San Francisco (6-7) at Philadelphia (9-4)
Time: 10 a.m. Line: Eagles -8? Total: 42?
TV: Fox (5)
Weather: Mid-30s, 70 percent chance of precipitation

Analysis: Both teams are feasting on turnovers, with Philly going plus-3 its past two games and the 49ers forcing seven to beat Arizona on Monday. But that victory was the cherry on their season. They won?t have the same giddy-up in this early jet-lag game.
Forecast: Eagles 31, 49ers 14

New England (8-5) at Buffalo (5-8)
Time: 10 a.m. Line: Patriots -7 Total: 40?
TV: None
Weather: Mid-20s, 10 percent chance of snow
Facts: New England has beaten Buffalo 12 straight times. ... The Patriots? rally from an 24-13 fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Bills 25-24 in Week 1 matches the third-best fourth-quarter rally in a victory in 2009. The biggest occurred nine weeks later when the Colts overcame a 31-14 deficit to stagger New England. ... Patriots WR Randy Moss had 12 catches in Week 1, but six in the past three.
Analysis: Buffalo leads the NFL in interceptions and is tied for the league lead in defensive passer rating, which carries clout. Plus, it has the ability to play keep-away with a running game that had 200 yards at Kansas City last week.
Forecast: Patriots 20, Bills 17

Arizona (8-5) at Detroit (2-11)
Time: 10 a.m. Line: Cardinals -12? Total: 47
TV: None
Facts: Detroit is a league-worst 3-9-1 against the line this year, marking its sixth straight season with a sub-.500 mark. ... How come no one?s talking about the Lions? December swoon? Counting a 1997 playoff loss, they haven?t been over .500 in this month since 1995. ... The Cardinals bemoaned the fact they had seven turnovers Monday against the 49ers and couldn?t expect to win with that kind of performance. Tennessee did just that in 2000, beating Cleveland despite a minus-6 turnover differential.
Analysis: With the heart of Detroit?s team, Matthew Stafford, still suffering (questionable, shoulder) and RB Kevin Smith on IR, it?s up to backup QB Daunte Culpepper to carry the load. Look for him on the waiver wire soon.
Forecast: Cardinals 45, Lions 10

Cleveland (2-11) at Kansas City (3-10)
Time: 10 a.m. Line: Chiefs -2 Total: 37
TV: None
Weather: Low 40s, 10 percent chance of rain
Facts: This is the first game of the season between two teams that are guaranteed to turn in their gear in two weeks. ... Kansas City?s Matt Cassel and Detroit?s Culpepper are the only QBs this season to have back-to-back starts with a passer rating below the 39.6 Mendoza line, the score you?d get for having an incompletion on every pass. ... Cleveland?s all-purpose threat, Joshua Cribbs, has been limited in practice (questionable, ankle).
Analysis: The Chiefs will do what they often do this time of year when no one?s paying attention ? lay the wood to a visiting team in the last meaningless home game of the year.
Forecast: Chiefs 38, Browns 10

Atlanta (6-7) at N.Y. Jets (7-6)
Time: 10 a.m. Line: Off Total: Off
RADIO: KWWN-AM (1100)
Weather: Mid-30s, 90 percent chance of precipitation
Facts: Atlanta coach Mike Smith will be looking for a new headset after mangling his old one in a tirade last week against the Saints. ... QB Mark Sanchez returns to start for the Jets after spraining a knee ligament. And it looks like Chris Redman again for Atlanta in place of Matt Ryan (questionable, turf toe). Redman skewered the Saints for 303 yards last week.
Analysis: It?s tough to trust Sanchez even when he?s healthy, but in wet weather it?s harder to go against a Jets defense that has held its past three foes to a stunning 2.7 yards per pass.
Forecast: Jets 21, Falcons 10

Houston (6-7) at St. Louis (1-12)
Time: 10 a.m. Line: Texans -11 Total: 43
TV: None
Facts: Rams rookie QB Keith Null pitched five interceptions in his emergency start last week at Tennessee in place of Kyle Boller (questionable, illness/thigh). Null?s position coach in college was Ryan Leaf. ... Houston WR Andre Johnson had 193 yards in last week?s 34-7 cakewalk over Seattle and its 28th-rated pass defense (based on passer rating). St. Louis? unit is 29th. ... In 2005, Houston blew a 24-3 second-half lead to St. Louis and lost 33-27 in OT.
Analysis: The Rams kicked one of their starting guards off the team, and their other one is injured. That?s miserable news for the QB of choice. On the other side, there?s little reason to think QB Matt Schaub and Johnson won?t enjoy their day.
Forecast: Texans 34, Rams 13

Miami (7-6) at Tennessee (6-7)
Time: 10 a.m. Line: Titans -3 Total: 41?
TV: None
Weather: Low 40s, 20 percent chance of rain
Facts: Miami is in a three-way tie for the final AFC wild-card berth and would take over first in the East with a victory and a Patriots loss to Buffalo. Tennessee is in a four-team pack with seven losses, but has the worst conference mark of the bunch. ... Titans QB Vince Young (questionable, hamstring) practiced Thursday. ... Tennessee RB Chris Johnson, on pace for 2,001 rushing yards, is averaging 125 a game. Miami hasn?t allowed anyone more than 122 this season.
Analysis: That bull?s-eye on Johnson?s jersey might be getting heavier; discounting a 39-yard run, he averaged only 2.9 yards on 27 carries last week against St. Louis. Miami?s tricky and punishing ground game warrants an edge.
Forecast: Dolphins 24, Titans 21

Oakland (4-9) at Denver (8-5)
Time: 1:05 p.m. Line: Broncos -14 Total: 37
TV: None
Weather: Low 50s, 10 percent chance of rain
Facts: Denver hasn?t been this big a favorite since winning 13-3 as a 14-point home favorite over Oakland in 2006. ... In Week 3, Denver overcame a minus-2 turnover differential to beat Oakland 23-3. ... J.P. Losman, who guided Las Vegas to the UFL title, is the Raiders? new third-team QB. The last time he faced NFL competition, with Buffalo last season, he committed three turnovers in the final two minutes of a gruesome 31-27 loss to the Jets.
Analysis: Oakland?s Charlie Frye takes over at QB for injured Bruce Gradkowski. Two years ago there was a 48-hour period in which Frye went from Cleveland?s Week 1 starter to Seattle?s scout team. He doesn?t stand a chance against a unit that intercepted Peyton Manning three times last week.
Forecast: Broncos 30, Raiders 6

Cincinnati (9-4) at San Diego (10-3)
Time: 1:05 p.m. Line: Chargers -6? Total: 43?
TV: CBS (8) RADIO: KWWN-AM (1100)
Weather: Low 70s, 10 percent chance of rain
Facts: The Chargers, who have won an NFL-record 16 straight December games, have had the fewest penalty yards in the league and are fourth in the league with a plus-8 turnover differential. ... Cincinnati closed out a 4-11-1 season last year with upset victories in Weeks 15-17. ... Before making a name for himself, Cincinnati?s Chad Ochocinco had a league-best 27 catches for 20-plus yards in 2007. He?s had only 17 the past two seasons combined.
Analysis: Both teams have two-game division leads and are on the verge of clinching, but at stake here is a playoff bye. The long trip, though, and the grief caused by the shocking death of WR Chris Henry can?t help but drain Cincinnati.
Forecast: Chargers 31, Bengals 20

Chicago (5-8) at Baltimore (7-6)
Time: 1:15 p.m. Line: Ravens -11 Total: 40?
TV: None
Weather: Mid-30s, 70 percent chance of snow
Facts: The weather is going to play havoc here. The starting time has been pushed back three hours, presumably to allow more time for snow removal. ... Chicago and QB Jay Cutler have lost six in a row against the line. Counting Cutler?s days in Denver, he?s 14-35-1 (.286) against the spread when he starts. The man he swapped huddles with, Kyle Orton, is 26-17-3 (.605). ... If Baltimore wins out, it isn?t guaranteed a playoff spot.
Analysis: Too many Ravens play-makers are questionable (WR Derrick Mason, S Ed Reed, LB/DE Terrell Suggs) to warrant such a big line. Speedy Johnny Knox could cause problems for Baltimore?s gambling secondary.
Forecast: Ravens 24, Bears 23

Green Bay (9-4) at Pittsburgh (6-7)
Time: 1:15 p.m. Line: Steelers -2 Total: 40?
TV: Fox (5)
Weather: Low 30s, 30 percent chance of rain/snow
Facts: Don?t see this too often: A team on a five-game losing streak is a favorite over one on a five-game winning streak. ... Pittsburgh is second in sacks with 38, while Green Bay has allowed a league-high 48. The Packers have had only one game in which they didn?t allow any, against Cleveland in Week 7. Those Browns matched an NFL-best with eight last Thursday against Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Green Bay is an incredible 3-0 against the line when committing 100-plus yards in penalties, compared with a 5-8 mark for the rest of the league. But the well-rested and bitter Steelers will make them pay this time.
Forecast: Steelers 20, Packers 14

Tampa Bay (1-12) at Seattle (5-8)
Time: 1:15 p.m. Line: Seahawks -6? Total: 39?
TV: None
Weather: Low 50s, 80 percent chance of rain
Facts: It can?t get much worse for Bucs QB Josh Freeman. He has thrown eight interceptions in the past two games without leading his team on a TD drive. ... On the other hand, Seattle?s butterfingered Matt Hasselbeck has fumbled three times in each of his past two games. ... The Bucs had only six first downs in their dreary 26-3 home loss to the Jets last week. The only time a team had fewer this year was when Tampa Bay had five in a 24-0 loss to the Giants.
Analysis: After Seattle?s 34-7 road loss to Houston last week, coach Jim Mora suggested his offensive linemen open up a can of Whup Keister. They?ll probably come out growling against a team that?s next to last on the run charts, allowing 4.7 yards a carry.
Forecast: Seahawks 26, Buccaneers 7

Minnesota (11-2) at Carolina (5-8)
Time: 5:20 p.m. Line: Vikings -9 Total: 42?
TV: NBC (3) RADIO: KWWN-AM (1100)
Weather: Low 40s, 20 percent chance of rain
Facts: The Panthers lost last week at New England 20-10 despite a plus-3 turnover margin. Over the past two years, clubs are 43-8-1 with such a differential. ... Vikings WR Percy Harvin (questionable) has been suffering from headaches and missed last week?s game after having 17 catches for 269 yards and three TDs the previous three games. ... Carolina scored two TDs in Matt Moore?s two starts in place of QB Jake Delhomme (questionable, finger). Moore starts again Sunday.
Analysis: Minnesota?s run defense isn?t quite the brick wall it used to be, but still ranks fourth in yards allowed. And with CB Antoine Winfield back, Moore might not have much success.
Forecast: Vikings 27, Panthers 14

MONDAY?S GAME

N.Y. Giants (7-6) at Washington (4-9)
Time: 5:30 p.m. Line: Giants -3 Total: 43
TV: ESPN (30) RADIO: KWWN-AM (1100)
Weather: High 30s, 20 percent chance of precipitation
Facts: The last time the Redskins hosted a Monday night game, Steelers fans drowned out the signals of QB Jason Campbell in a 23-6 Pittsburgh victory last season. ... If Dallas loses to New Orleans today, the Giants will take the field knowing they will earn at least a wild card by winning out. ... Washington has beaten the line in five straight, one off the league?s season best.
Analysis: Redskins RB Quinton Ganther is a nice story coming off the streets to become a starter, but he?s not enough to carry the load against a playoff contender.
Forecast: Giants 24, Redskins 13

Last week: 11-5 vs. spread; 11-5 straight up
Season total: 102-101-4 vs. spread; 124-84 straight up

Fezzik, Blankenship square off heads-up for the title

Sunday's NFL game between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers could go a long way in determining a champion ? in the world of sports handicapping, that is.

This weekend marks the championship of the Leroy's Money Talks Invitational 2009, the prestigious match play sports handicapping tournament between 16 well-known gamblers who each put up $5,000 to enter.

Steve Fezzik, one of Las Vegas' top sports handicappers, and Lance Blankenship, a recreational sports bettor and roofing contractor from Pittsburgh, will meet in the finals.

Fezzik and Blankenship announced their seven plays for this weekend Friday at the Pete & Shorty's Sports Book and Bar inside Hooters Casino. The only game they both picked was Green Bay's trip to Pittsburgh.

Fezzik took the Steelers -2. Blankenship sided with the Packers +2.

"(Pittsburgh) is in the middle of a horrible swing and I don't think Green Bay is a good opportunity to get them out of it," Blankenship said. "Aaron Rodgers has shown his ability and the Pittsburgh defense is horrible right now."

Pittsburgh has lost five straight and, at 6-7, looks like it could miss the playoffs. But that didn't bother Fezzik.

He noted that the Steelers' turnover margin is minus 5, while the Packers are at plus 18.

"If you believe in turnovers being random, then Green Bay has been enormously lucky and Pittsburgh has been very unlucky," Fezzik said.

The champion will be determined by who has a better winning percentage in the seven games they each selected this weekend. Both Fezzik and Blankenship also announced a "best bet" each to serve as tiebreakers.

The winner will take the whole prize of $80,000 ? although both players hinted that they made a deal to pay both places.

"I think that's a private matter between both of us," Fezzik said. "But I can tell you I have a definite incentive financially to win this contest."

This wouldn't be Fezzik's first major sports handicapping contest victory. Last year, he won the Las Vegas Hilton Supercontest.

Fezzik is in third in the Hilton's contest this year. Win or lose both contests, Fezzik has put together quite the run in the last two years.

"I've done a really exhaustive study of this and what I've found is that prior to 2008, I kept picking too many losers," Fezzik said. "Now, I've started picking more winners."

Although Blankenship has not won any major tournaments, he started betting on sports seriously about six years ago. He focuses primarily on college basketball and college football and bets around $1 million per year.

With only three college football games on the board this weekend, Blankenship could be at a disadvantage. The only college game he selected for the contest was Central Florida +4 against Rutgers in the St. Petersburg Bowl.

His other selections are the Dallas Cowboys +7 on the road against the New Orleans Saints, "under" the total of 53.5 in the Cowboys' game, the San Francisco 4ers +8 at the Philadelphia Eagles and "under" the total of 42 in the 49ers' game.

His best bet is the Oakland Raiders +14 at the Denver Broncos.

"Denver just came off a tough loss against Indianapolis," Blankenship said. "I don't know if they're going to come out very sharp in the first half."

Fezzik's plays are "over" the total of 57 in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl between Middle Tennessee State and Southern Miss, Wyoming +11 against Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl, Carolina +10 at home against Minnesota in the NFL, "over" the total of 37 in the Kansas City Chiefs versus the Cleveland Browns and the Tennessee Titans -3 at home against the Miami Dolphins.

His best bet is the Washington Redskins +3 at home against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.

"I like an outright win," Fezzik said. "The Redskins are going to pound the Giants and it will save me because I think I'm going to need this game."

THEIR PICKS ARE HERE

Good grief, Fezzik is such an asshole, if he wins this, he will be intolerable, not that anyone tolerates him now.

Las Vegas Money Moves

Las Vegas Money Moves

Las Vegas Money Moves
December 19, 2009

The Las Vegas City Center opened over the last week, an $8.5 billion master planned community built right on the strip in between the Monte Carlo and Bellagio. The MGM-Mirage venture began before the economic climate changed drastically in Las Vegas, but the hopes of the most in the city is that it becomes an overwhelming success and helps jump-start Las Vegas in a new positive direction.

I visited the only casino in the center, Aria, amid all the condominiums and high end shops in the mall and came away very impressed, in particular with the Race and Sports Book. It was a new concept they went with from the outset that separates Aria?s book from all others in town.

?The main thing that makes it different from other books is that it?s a loungey type of place,? said MGM-Mirage Director of Race and Sports Jay Rood. ?We wanted a place where even if there were no games on TV, it was still a place guests could feel comfortable hanging out in.?

The Book itself is built somewhat like a club with modern couches and comfortable chairs giving the appearance of being in several different rooms wherever you choose to sit. The flat screens and two giant monster screens in the sports area make it impossible to miss any action from all the games, either sitting or standing.

Most traditional books have players all seated one way, facing forward, to a display of games or races in front of them. Aria?s Book keeps the action surrounding you and conforms to how or where you want to sit. It?s a complete relaxed environment that makes watching a game about as good as it gets in Las Vegas.

?It definitely is a deviation from the traditional books we?ve seen built, yet we wanted to keep an area alone by itself away from the sports action to give race players a little privacy, ? said Rood.

In Aria?s Race Book-only area there are 27 seats, each with Interactive Player Terminals (IPT), reserved for serious horse players.

The one thing that remained the same on Thursday night, just like all the other books, was that everyone bet the favored Colts on the road at Jacksonville in what turned out to be a classic rock ?em-sock?em shootout with several lead changes throughout.

The bettors didn?t care that the Colts had clinched and could possibly rest several of their key starters like Peyton Manning, Joseph Addai, and Reggie Wayne. All they knew is that the Colts were undefeated and they had covered more times than not.

The Colts opened up a 3-point favorite and by kickoff were sitting at 3 ?. With just over five minutes to go in the game when Wayne hauled in a bomb to make it 35-31, the Aria?s foundation seemed to move slightly with the roar of hundreds of Colt backers.

The public favorite of betting a two-team parlay, favorite to the over, finally hit on Thursday. Every NFL Thursday game this season had gone 'under,' including all three Thanksgiving games.

Other NFL games that moved at MGM-Mirage properties this week include the Broncos jumping to 14-point favorites from the opener of 12 ?. Who was it that finally got into Al Davis' head and said JaMarcus Russell is no good? Needing a backup to play this week due to Bruce Gradkowski being out, the Raiders called up Charlie Frye off their practice squad to get the start. It?s quite possible Russell may be the worst draft pick in NFL history.

The Steelers have a big home game against the Packers as they try to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. The public believes they can do based on the opener moving from pick-em to the Steelers laying 1 ?.

The Patriots have been an awful 1-5 on the road this year, but find themselves with public support at Buffalo this week, moving from a 7-point favorite to 7 ?.

Bad weather is currently circulating in the Carolina?s stretching to northern Virginia and Tennessee. Cities like Baltimore, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia could all see remnants of mother nature?s Christmas cheer by game time. Keep an eye on the doppler and bet accordingly on some of the totals before they move.

The M Resort in Las Vegas has some great Yes-No props regarding the Saints. Will the Saints go 16-0? No is -125 with Yes +105. Will they win the NFC Championship? Yes is even money while the No is -120. The math looks favorable in taking the Yes to go undefeated and Yes to win the Championship.

If you multiplied the money line on your own each week, you?d be hard pressed to get +105 in the Saints three games remaining against Dallas on Saturday, Tampa Bay, and Carolina. On the Championship side, even money would be hard to get multiplying two wins as big favorites. Should the Vikings lose in the first round, the NFC title game spread would be much higher giving the player much value in the prop if betting Yes now.

LVSC Rankings - Week 15

LVSC Rankings - Week 15

LVSC Rankings - Week 15
December 17, 2009

Two undefeated teams remain in the NFL, but that didn't stop a change atop the latest Las Vegas Sports Consultants power rankings. The Colts and Saints flipped spots, despite both clubs owning 13-0 records.

Indianapolis jumped New Orleans for the first position, following a 28-16 home victory over Denver. The Colts started 13-0 back in 2005, but fell at home to the Chargers, and ultimately finished 14-2. Peyton Manning and the Colts head to Jacksonville on Thursday, as Indianapolis has won four of the last five road meetings in this series.

The Saints dropped to the second spot after holding off the Falcons at the Georgia Dome. New Orleans spent eight weeks in the top position before getting knocked out by Indianapolis this week, but Sean Payton's team has larger aspirations. The Saints return to the Superdome this Saturday night to host the struggling Cowboys.

The next four spots all stayed put, as Minnesota, San Diego, New England, and Philadelphia are all coming off victories last week. The Vikings bounced back from the loss at Arizona to thrash the Bengals this past Sunday, improving to 11-2. The Chargers won their eighth straight game at Dallas, while owning a two-game advantage in the AFC West over the Broncos.

The Patriots still have to hold off the Dolphins and Jets inside the AFC East, but New England sits alone in the fourth position this week. New England held off Carolina last Sunday, as the Pats head to Buffalo looking for their 13th consecutive victory over the Bills.

The Eagles are riding a four-game hot streak, which is good enough for a 9-4 record and sole possession of first place in the NFC East. Philadelphia controls its own destiny in the division race after sweeping the Giants, but Andy Reid's team still travels to Dallas in Week 17. The Eagles return home this week for a matchup with the 6-7 Niners.

Many would have though the Packers' season was over after a devastating loss at previously winless Tampa Bay in Week 9. Since then, Green Bay has captured five straight victories to run its record to 9-4 and grab hold of a Wild Card spot in the NFC. The Packers have not clinched yet, but Mike McCarthy's club is in a great position to make the postseason. Green Bay takes its winning streak into Pittsburgh on Sunday, battling a Steelers club that has lost five in a row.

The two teams that made the biggest jumps this week both hail from the AFC North. The Ravens vaulted from 13th to 10th after destroying Detroit, 47-3. Baltimore takes on another NFC North opponent this week, hosting stumbling Chicago. Cleveland, meanwhile, picked up only its second victory of the season by upsetting Pittsburgh. The Browns jumped from 30th to 27th, but still sit at 2-11 as they head to Kansas City this Sunday.

NFL Week 15: Primetime Pro Pigskin Preview

NFL Week 15: Primetime Pro Pigskin Preview

NFL Week 15: Primetime Pro Pigskin Preview

With a Saturday NFL game this weekend, NFL Betting fans have three primetime pro pigskin matchups to look forward to over the next three days.

It all starts with the struggling Dallas Cowboys visiting the unbeaten New Orleans Saints in a Saturday night showdown (8:20 pm ET, NFL Network).

The Saints are a -310 moneyline, 7-point favorite in NFL Lines at betED.com. The over/under total is 54.

To say the Saints have dominated the Cowboys in recent meetings would be an understatement, as New Orleans is a perfect 5-0 both straight up and against the spread over the past five head-to-head.

But the teams haven?t met in more than three years, since a 42-17 New Orleans win as a 7-point road dog on Dec. 10, 2006.

On Sunday Night Football, the Minnesota Vikings visit the Carolina Panthers (8:20 pm ET, NBC).

betED.com has the Vikings as -450 moneyline, 9-point favorites and the over/under at 43.

The Vikings are 5-3 SU and 4-4 ATS over the past eight meetings. Their last meeting was Sept. 21 last season, when Minnesota doubled Carolina 20-10 as a 3-point home favorite.

The primetime pigskin continues with Monday Night Football, which features an NFC East battle between the New York Giants and the host Washington Redskins (8:35 pm ET, ESPN).

The Giants are -140 moneyline, 2.5-point favorites and the total is 43.5 in NFL Odds.

New York is 7-3 SU and 6-3-1 ATS in the past 10 meetings. The teams last squared off in Week 1 this season, when the Giants won 23-17 as a 6-point home favorite. The score went over the total of 37.

NFL Week 15 Betting Previews

NFL Week 15 Betting Previews

NFL Week 15 Betting Previews

The NFL will have a rare Saturday game this week and it?s a good one. After Indy stayed undefeated on Thursday night, the focus now shifts to the Saints on Saturday.

The Dallas Cowboys are in the Bayou to play New Orleans Saints. Online sportsbook SPORTSBETTING.com currently has the visitor as 8-point underdogs with an Over/Under of 54.

The Cowboys were in good shape not too long ago, on a 6-2 run (straight up) through October and November but have begun, what seems to be, their annual December swoon.

In their last 12 games in the last month of the year, Dallas is an atrocious 1-11 against the spread.

As you would expect, they have not fared well on the road in December, stumbling to a 2-9 mark in their last 11 and are currently on an 0-6 ATS skid in their last six.

Tony Romo and company haven?t fared much better against the Saints, with a record of 1-6 ATS in their last seven overall vs. New Orleans.

At the Superdome, Dallas is 1-5 ATS last six.

Total bettors take note, the last five matchups between these two in New Orleans have produced five straight Unders.

The Saints have been flying high throughout the season, obviously, as they own a polished 13-0 mark.

SPORTSBETTING.com currently has a cool prop bet on: New Orleans is listed at +150 to finish the regular season with a 16-0 record.

In their last 20 when favored by 8-points or less, the Saints are marching, with a record of 15-5 ATS and in their last 10 games against opponents from the NFC East, New Orleans has produced eight straight Overs.

The Saints? last 10 home games, the Over has cashed seven times.

The sports betting public have been jumping on the home team, with 80% of all the action so far coming in on New Orleans.

This should be an entertaining game, as the Saints try and keep pace with the Colts in the run to go undefeated.

- Week 15 will conclude when the New York Giants travel to the nation?s capital to play the Washington Redskins ? the G-Men are favored by a field goal with a Total of 44.

There seems to be just as much disarray amongst the Redskins? front office as there is on the field.

The team has a regular season record of 4-9 while a new GM was hired on Thursday in the form of Bruce Allen, son of late, great Redskins coach George Allen.

Rams' Jackson and Boller miss practice with flu

Rams' Jackson and Boller miss practice with flu

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson sat out Friday's practice with the flu, putting his status in doubt for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Jackson has been unable to practice for many weeks due to a herniated disk but has yet to miss a game this season. He is one of many St. Louis players who are dealing with illness.

"Steven has shown he can do well without practice and I anticipate he'll do very well this week," backup running back Samkon Gado said. "I'd be very surprised if he couldn't go."

The Rams canceled practice Thursday because of confirmed cases of swine flu within the team.

Quarterback Kyle Boller, who missed last week's game with a thigh injury, also missed Friday's practice with the flu.

That could force the Rams to start rookie Keith Null, who threw five interceptions last week in his pro debut.

St. Louis was dominated 47-7 by the Titans last week as 13.5-point underdogs. Tennessee stacked the box against the Rams with the inexperienced Null under center and held Jackson to a season-low 39 yards on 18 carries.

The Rams opened as 10.5-point home underdogs to the Texans, but the flu outbreak in the St. Louis locker room has inflated the spread to as high as 13.5 at some shops.

Charlotte, NC - Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme has been ruled out because of a broken finger on his throwing hand, meaning Matt Moore will make his third straight start Sunday against Minnesota.

Delhomme has been unable to practice since suffering the break in a loss to the Jets on November 29.

Moore completed 15-of-30 passes for 197 yards and one touchdown in last week's loss at New England.

Falcons' Ryan, Turner questionable vs. Jets

- Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and running back Michael Turner were limited participants in practice for a second straight day on Friday and are listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Jets.

Both players missed Wednesday's session due to their respective injuries and had been out of action since the team's November 29 game against Tampa Bay.

In that game, Ryan suffered a turf toe that has kept him sidelined the past two games, both losses with Chris Redman getting the start behind center.

Turner, meanwhile, is still nursing an ankle injury that has forced him to sit out three of the past four games.

Defensive ends John Abraham (not injury related) and Jamaal Anderson (chest), defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux (shoulder), tackle Sam Baker (elbow, hamstring), guard Harvey Dahl (ankle), and center Todd McClure (knee) are also questionable for Sunday.

Cornerback Chris Houston (hamstring) is doubtful after missing practice all week.

Cardinals K Rackers ruled out vs. Lions

The Arizona Cardinals will be without kicker Neil Rackers when they take on the Detroit Lions this Sunday.

Rackers missed practice all week with a right groin injury. Mike Nugent will play in place of Rackers.

Arizona will also be without linebacker Will Davis (knee) and tackle Mike Gandy (pelvis).

Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald (knee), linebacker Gerald Hayes (back), defensive end Kenny Iwebema (shoulder), and cornerback Dominique Rodgers- Cromartie (toe) are questionable for Sunday.

Fitzgerald suffered a bone contusion and right knee sprain during Monday's loss to the 49ers. He plans to play against the Lions despite being limited in practice all week.
