NFL's OT

You know it wouldn't hurt for the NFL to take one aspect of the college game and apply to the Pros. And what I am referring to is OT. I knew yesterday that I was either going to win or lose Dallas +1.5 on the OT coin toss. I think its like 75% of the teams that win the coin toss in OT also win the game. Why not give the other team a chance with the ball? Really its the only fair thing to do. I don't think the NFL could set up OT exactly like the college game but each team should have a chance to score. If I'm not mistaken this is the only sport where the defensive and/or opposing team doesn't get an equal chance to score. This is one of very few faults within the NFL and I hope someday they open their eyes and address this issue.

P.S. Cundiff making that damn field goal would have helped too!

Well it's been sudden death for so long, but this is what I'd do.

Play 1 full quarter. Whatever the score is at the end of the fifth quarter, sobeit

Fluctuates each year, but two year ago I know the grand total was 49%. I think the NFL will need to see a real correlation between winning the coin flip and winning the overtime, and from my understanding, that correlation does not exist.

Think your numbers are way off regarding winning toss/winning OT...believe numbers are actually closer to 50/50

Build a killer DEFENSE, put it on the field and WIN IN REGULATION with a team that is a machine, and OT won't be an issue. I came soo damn close to buying a full point instead of just the hook yesterday, I am a little upset myself! But my old signature line used to be "Some gotta win, gotta lose, PUSHES let me play another day! An extra quarter could lead to more injuries than the league would like, not sure about that just a hunch. I always consider the OT possibility in my handicap. Always an OT loser laying 6.5 or more. One interesting study would be how many OT games end with a FG vs a TD, But I am not gonna do that research today.

First of all, college OT SUCKS. You know why? Because its NOT FOOTBALL. Football is more than running plays. Football is field position with kickoffs and punts, etc. I despise college OT b/c they play football for 60 minutes and then play a different game to decide the winner.

I used to not mind NFL's OT but it needs to change. I don't kow the exact stats but it used to be something like 52% wins for coin-toss winner. Keep in mind about 8% ties.
The last decade or so the number is a lot higher. Part of that is better kickers and also the fact that they now kickoff from the 30.

I don't know what the answer is but one would be to kickoff from the 35 in OT. Another would be that you have to score 6 points in OT to win.

Or kicking off from the 10. Which would equalize the field position edge.....and IMO lead to some strategy between reciieving or kicking.

kicking off from the 10? that's even worse, don't you mean kick off from like the 40 or 50 instead? kicking off from the 10 and you're gonna lose the game real quick.

they should play a half a quarter (7:30).....it would almost guarantee each team gets the ball once.

guaranteeing at least one possession for the team that loses the coin toss is completely UNFAIR to the team that wins the toss......

say that team has a nice drive but settles for a short fg....the opposing team knows it has 4 plays for 10 yards to keep the chains moving on the next possession and a punt is not an option...this offensive philosophy keeps drives alive and leads to easliy getting into fg range or getting a td.

Maybe have no kickoff. The team starts off at their own 20. Whoever wins coin toss can still choose defense, but I'm sure they would always take offense, except for Waybe Fontes.

Sorry brain cramp....typing while watching the end of a game.

When I said kick off from 10....I meant start from 10. You lose special teams play on kick off, but you gain a situation where some teams would opt for giving the other team the ball. That indecision....would be a measure of its fairness. Right now, no one opts to go on defense. Its too one sided.

I doubt the NFL will do anything for years. The 52% is their argument (thats from the origin of ot). Does anyone have data from the last 5 or 10 years alone?
