Stars-Wild preview
10/17/2002

By MIKE HEIKA / The Dallas Morning News

Thursday at Minnesota, Xcel Energy Center, 7 p.m.

TV: FSN.
Radio: WBAP-AM 820.
Series: Stars lead, 4-3-1.

SCOUTING THE TEAMS
STARS

Trend: The hottest team during the regular season, the Stars have outscored the competition, 13-5. Playing a looser brand of hockey, Stars players seem to be enjoying themselves more than ever. However, they will have to be on their toes against the Wild, which likes to trap and jump on opponent's mistakes. Dallas won both of its games in Minnesota last season.

Who's hot: Among goalies who have played three games, Marty Turco has the league's best GAA at 0.98. He'll need it, because he had a 3.11 GAA and an .865 save percentage against the Wild last season.

Who's not: It's a strange statistic, because he has played well, but D Richard Matvichuk is a minus-2 on the season.

Notables: Dallas sent Jon Sim to Utah of the AHL Wednesday so that he could get a little playing time during this two-game road trip. ... The Stars signed D Trevor Daley to a three-year rookie contract. Daley will stay with his Ontario Hockey League team, the Soo Greyhounds. ... In three games against the Wild last season, C Pierre Turgeon had two goals and three assists.

Injuries: C Jason Arnott (high ankle sprain) is out.

WILD

Trend: Officially, the hottest team in hockey. Minnesota went 7-0-1 in the preseason and is 2-0-1 during the regular season. Coming off a 4-1 win over Florida on Tuesday, Minnesota is once again playing strong team defense. It has allowed four goals in three games.

Who's hot: Andrew Brunette has two goals and two assists in three games this season. He had two goals and three assists in four games vs. the Stars last season.

Who's not: The Wild is playing so well, it has few soft spots. Young winger Marian Gaborik has three assists, but he has no goals and has fired only six shots on net in three games.

Notables: The Wild has been rotating goalies, and it's Dwayne Roloson's turn to play. That means the Stars probably won't face former teammate Manny Fernandez, who also has a tie to coach Dave Tippett. Fernandez served as goalie on the Houston team that Tippett led to the IHL title in 1999. ... C Cliff Ronning has 799 career points. ... Bill Muckalt had two goals Tuesday but also suffered a foot injury and is not expected to play.

Injuries: C Bill Muckalt (ankle) is doubtful.

Texas,

Your information was correct. I'm listening to the Caps game right now on radio. Washington's announcer said the Capitals won the season series last year. NHL.com, where I get a lot of my information, had it wrong. Thanks again for trying to lend a helping hand. Now, let's hope the Caps pull this game out. Good luck!
