NHL Playoff Betting Preview ? Western Conference

The best part of the NHL season has arrived, the Stanley Cup chase. Eight teams from each conference all believing they are the team of destiny. The opening round is often treacherous territory as 12 lower seeds have won the last four years and three other went to a game seven, as the higher seed used its home ice edge to conquer opponent. Goaltending is such a huge part of the Stanley Cup dynamic and five of the seven regular starting netminders in the Western Conference have no previous postseason experience, which will just add to the craziness. All lines courtesy of Bookmaker.com.

(1) San Jose vs (8) Colorado

The West has five legitimate teams capable skill-wise of making the Stanley Cup Finals and the top one at least from talent standpoint is San Jose. The Sharks have five 20-goal scorers, but are more thought of as lion from the Wizard of Oz, lacking courage at crunch time. Among the reasons is San Jose?s inability to outwork the opposition in April and May (let alone June) as past playoffs have shown and though Evgeni Nabokov is among the Top 10 goalies in the game, he is 32-31 in the postseason and did nothing to enhance is status with disappointing Olympic performance.

Youth was served in Colorado this season as remade roster was coached by first year coach Joe Sacco. The grind of a long season appeared to wear down the young Avs players, losing 10 of final 13 contests. Their top point producers were mostly first year players like Matt Duchene. Goalie Craig Anderson was 10-4 SU in October, but he too saw his play slip, after facing the most shots of any netminder in the NHL.

San Jose is the third choice to be Stanley Cup champions at +390 and have to take advantage of Colorado?s penalty-killing that has surrendered 15 goals in previous 14 games. San Jose is 5-1 on home ice against the Avalanche and 8-4 in the last three years. If the Sharks are truly hungry as they claim, they dominate Avs at home and at worst split in the Rockies.

Pick- San Jose (-400) in five over Colorado (+330)

(2) Chicago vs (7) Nashville

The Blackhawks are actually the top betting choice to be in Cup Finals; however they will have to navigate a potentially treacherous opponent in Nashville. This will be the last series to commence, starting on Friday and the Predators have blue-line talent like Shea Weber and Ryan Suter. They also have netminder who can turn into stone wall in Pekka Rinne, whose had personal win streaks of four or more games three times to go along with seven shutouts. Nashville is offensively challenged but coach Barry Trotz rings out every bit of talent out of this frugal franchise.

Chicago has splendid offensive players like Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith and is stellar as possessing the puck to keep the pressure on opposing defenses. The Blackhawks will look to keep this advantage and force Nashville mistakes, which could prove fatal with the Preds 28th in penalty kills. Chicago?s question mark is between the pipes with Finnish rookie Antti Niemi. The 26-year old has been the nearly impregnable, handing out seven zeroes in only 38 starts and is riding six-game winning streak. How long can it last?

Chicago won four of six, but these Central Division rivals couldn?t be any less familiar with one another, having not met in 2010. These teams only averaged 4.5 goals a game in their meetings, thus the Under and Chicago looks like the best bet.

Pick- Chicago (-410) in five over Nashville (+340)
(3) Vancouver vs (6) Los Angeles

Unlike the 4 vs.5 matchup, Vancouver and Los Angeles will play in the same time zone for the duration of their series, playing every other day. The Canucks organization (to sound Canadien, pronounce it organ-EYE-zation) thinks of itself more than just a fringe player out West. They see themselves as real contenders with NHL's point?s leader Henrik Sedin leading a deep, balanced offense that can apply continual pressure. In net, Robert Luongo is regarded as one of the best keepers in the game, but can melt down like an ice cream cone on a warm summer?s day, leaving a mess. The Canucks were 30-11 on home ice, but face an under the radar Kings club that could be troublesome.

Though Los Angeles is a sixth seed compared Vancouver at No. 3, they only finished two points behind the Canucks in final standings and reached the 100-point total for the first time in 19 long years. The Kings have quality youngsters like Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty and have no real expectations, thus can perform pressure-free compared to Vancouver. The Kings stay in the post-season will correspond with the play of goalie Jonathan Quick. The 24-year old was having brilliant campaign, but lost his final eight starts.

L.A. was 24-17 SU on the road, but lost both contests at Vancouver scoring a total of two goals. They will need Quick to be extra quick and score early to make Canucks breathe with greater uncertainty. This could go the distance with upset potential.

Pick- Vancouver (-240) in seven over Los Angeles (+200)
(4) Phoenix vs (5) Detroit

Without a doubt the most compelling first round matchup of all. Phoenix was the most engaging story in hockey all year. A franchise owned by the league trying to find an owner to keep it in the desert, bringing in a coach just days before the start of the regular season, yet miraculously the Coyotes ended up with the 50 wins (fourth best) and are in the playoffs for the first time in eight years. Coach Dave Babcock is a back of the net choice for coach of the year and netminder Ilya Bryzgalov is a legitimate candidate for the Hart (best player) and Vezina (top goalie) trophies this year. Phoenix is the only higher seed not to be favored in a series and realistically for good reason.

It was not that long along Detroit was fighting just to earn the final spot in the West to make the postseason. However, the Red Wings got healthier week by week after the Olympic break and are on serious roll at 17-3-2. They Red Wings have the players known for high-level performances this time of year. Detroit will look to play keep away with the puck to slow down defensive-minded Phoenix and don?t have to fear the ?Yotes prowess in shootouts (14 of the Coyotes wins came by this method) since regular overtime will decide winners.

These teams split four conflicts and if Phoenix wants to go beyond Cinderella fairy-tale dressed up as dogs, no better team to prove it against. Red Wings rookie goaltender Jimmy Howard has NO experience this time of the year; however Bryzgalov has just 16 playoff games under his sweater. Coyotes have to stay out of the penalty box and play their game to continue dream season.

Pick- Detroit (-185) in six over Phoenix (+165)

Stanley Cup Playoff Preview - San Jose vs. Colorado

SAN JOSE SHARKS (1st seed, West)

REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 51-20-11

2009 PLAYOFFS: Lost to Anaheim 4-2 in conference quarterfinals

REVIEW: For the second season in a row, the San Jose Sharks head into the postseason as the Western Conference's top seed. Make no mistake, though, the Sharks do not want history to repeat itself.

The reason for that is simple; last year, the Sharks headed into the playoffs fresh off a 117-point season that netted them the Presidents' Trophy and high expectations. To say San Jose ended up underachieving is putting it nicely. Many felt that the Sharks choked.

The Sharks were eliminated in the first round by the Anaheim Ducks in six games, not the way head coach Todd McLellan wanted to begin his tenure with San Jose in his postseason debut.

Unlike last season, the Sharks do have some momentum this time around. They went 5-4-1 in their final 10 games a year ago, but wrapped up 2009-10 with a four-game winning streak and an 8-1-1 mark in their last 10.

Similar to last season, the Sharks have the tools for a deep run in what is their sixth straight appearance in the postseason. However, just one of those has gone past the semifinals, a 2004 Western Conference finals loss to Calgary.

Goaltender Evgeni Nabokov finished second in the NHL with 44 wins and the Sharks boast potentially one of the top lines in the game with Joe Thornton centering wingers Patrick Marleau and Dany Heatley. Thornton finished second in the league with 69 assists and eighth with 89 points, while Marleau was fourth with 44 goals. Heatley, in his first season with San Jose, wasn't far back with 39 goals.

Should San Jose's top line get shut down, the Sharks will look to Ryane Clowe, Joe Pavelski and Devin Setoguchi to pick up the slack. Both Pavelski (25 goals) and Setoguchi (20) reached the 20-goal mark, while Clowe chipped in 19 goals and 57 points.

Thornton is a veteran of 76 playoff games, posting 41 assists and 53 points in that span. Heatley, meanwhile, has 11 goals and 35 points in 34 playoff contests and Marleau has posted 37 goals and 62 points in 92 postseason appearances.

Offense won't only come from up front for the Sharks. Defenseman Dan Boyle was fourth on the club with 58 points -- fourth highest among NHL defenders -- while Rob Blake ended with 30. Those two tied for second in scoring during San Jose's short run in last year's playoffs with four points each, one behind Thornton.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic was limited to 64 games this year due to injury, but the defenseman turned in an excellent plus-21 rating. Kent Huskins did play in all 82 games and had 22 points, while trade deadline addition Niclas Wallin will help at the blueline as well.

Nabokov could be under the biggest spotlight, outside of maybe Thornton. The 34-year-old is 32-31 in the postseason with a 2.23 goals-against average, but posted a 2.82 GAA and .890 save percentage in last year's first-round exit.

San Jose was tied for fourth in the regular season, converting at a 21 percent clip on the power play, while also finishing fifth on the penalty kill at 85 percent.

COLORADO AVALANCHE (8th seed, West)

REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 43-30-9

2009 PLAYOFFS: Did not qualify

REVIEW: If the Colorado Avalanche look like a bunch of rookies skating around the ice when this series opens, that is because for the most part, they are.

Colorado's youth movement pushed the fast-forward button in 2009-10, as the club posted an 11-win turnaround to grab the eighth seed one season after finishing last in the Western Conference with 69 points. That gave the Avs their third playoff appearance in five seasons since the lockout.

Seven of Colorado's top nine scorers this year are under 24, giving Rocky Mountain fans some hope for long-term success. However, those seven skaters also have just 22 games of playoff experience between them. Nine of those games have been played by leading scorer Paul Stastny, with defenseman Kyle Quincey possessing the other 13.

Inexperience doesn't stop at the net, as goaltender Craig Anderson makes his playoff debut. Colorado signed Anderson to be its No. 1 goaltender this past offseason and he responded with a 38-25-7 record with seven shutouts and a 2.64 goals-against average in 71 starts.

The Avalanche will hope that their lack of playoff experience doesn't hurt them in this series, but keep in mind this will also be head coach Joe Sacco's playoff debut as well.

After being limited to 45 games a season ago, Stastny turned in a career year, setting a new personal best with 79 points off of 20 goals and a career-high 59 assists.

At 24, Stastny is the elder statesman among 22-year-old Chris Stewart and 19- year-old rookie Matt Duchene. Stewart, a 2006 first round pick, was second on the club with 64 points, including a team-high 28 goals, while 2009 third overall pick Duchene put together a Calder Trophy-worthy season with 24 goals and freshman-leading 55 points.

Duchene was slowed by a torso injury late in the season but should be okay for this series.

Peter Mueller, however, might not be after suffering a concussion on April 4 versus the Sharks on a hit by Blake. Mueller revived his young career after getting traded from Phoenix to Colorado at the deadline, posting nine goals and 20 points in 15 games after the trade as opposed to four goals and 17 points in 54 games before it.

Milan Hejduk, 34, managed 44 points despite playing in just 56 games due to injury and has 75 points in 109 playoff games, while 21-year-old T.J. Galiardi notched 24 points on the season.

The Avalanche had five defenseman reach the 20-point mark, lead by John- Michael Liles (31) and Quincey (29). Ryan Wilson, Brett Clark and Kyle Cumiskey also reached or passed the plateau, and those skaters will lean on captain Adam Foote for leadership.

Foote, 38, is second on the team in playoff experience with 164 games, a span that includes two Stanley Cup titles with Colorado in 1996 and 2001.

Forward Stephane Yelle should also be valuable to the locker room as he has appeared in a team-leading 165 playoff games.

The Avalanche finished near the middle of the pack on both the power play (18.1 percent) and penalty kill (80.2 percent).

MATCHUP
The Avalanche will try to become the third eight seed in five seasons to knock off the top-seeded club. However, the Sharks had the better of the season series, going 2-1-1 and winning both games in San Jose.

Marleau led the Sharks with three goals and five points in the four games versus the Avalanche, while Pavelski, Boyle, Heatley and Clowe all ended with a goal and three assists. Thornton was limited to just two assists in three games versus Colorado.

If Mueller is unable to go in this series, the Avalanche will miss his four goals and five points in two meetings with the Sharks in a Colorado sweater. Duchene notched a goal and three assists in the season series, while Hejduk had four assists.

Nabokov started three of the four games for San Jose, going 1-1-1 with a 3.60 GAA, while Anderson notched a 3.27 GAA in the four meetings.

These two clubs will meet in the postseason for the fourth time, with the last coming in 2004. The Sharks won that series, 4-2, in the semifinals before losing in six games to the Flames in the conference finals.

The Sharks were actually outscored by the Avalanche, 14-13, in this year's season series, showing just how close this series could end up being. It will be experience versus youth, a matchup that tends to tip towards the former.

predicted outcome: Sharks in 6

Stanley Cup Playoff Preview - Vancouver vs. Los Angeles

Stanley Cup Playoff Preview - Vancouver vs. Los Angeles

Stanley Cup Playoff Preview - Vancouver vs. Los Angeles

VANCOUVER CANUCKS (3rd seed, West)

REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 49-28-5

2009 PLAYOFFS: Defeated St. Louis 4-0 in conference quarterfinals; lost to Chicago 4-2 in conference semifinals

REVIEW: The Vancouver Canucks know that they have always had one of the best goaltenders in the game. However, the rest of North America now knows they also have one of the more talented scorers as well.

With netminder Roberto Luongo and recent Art Ross Trophy winner Henrik Sedin leading the charge, the Canucks feel the time is now for a deep postseason run.

Vancouver enters the playoffs having captured its second straight Northwest Division title, reaching the playoffs for the third time in four seasons. While they would like a repeat of last year's conference quarterfinals -- a four-game sweep of the Blues -- the Canucks were then ousted in the semifinals by Chicago and haven't made it past the second round since reaching the Stanley Cup Finals in 1994.

It will be up to Luongo and Sedin to change that.

Luongo has already been to the top of the hockey mountain once this year, as he supplanted New Jersey's Martin Brodeur as the starting goaltender for a Team Canada squad that went on to win the gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics at hosting Vancouver.

That was just one highlight for a season in which the 31-year-old Luongo went 40-22-4 with a 2.57 goals-against average and .913 save percentage in 68 games. He has had mixed success in the playoffs though as he holds a 2.09 career GAA in 22 games, but is just 11-11 in that span.

He'll get offensive help from Sedin, who became the first Canuck to win the Art Ross Trophy after he posted a club-record 112 points. Sedin also set career highs with 29 goals and 83 assists, with 10 of those goals coming during an 18-game span in October and November in which twin brother Daniel missed time with a broken foot.

Henrik had little trouble going back to his play-making role when Daniel returned, with the latter brother finishing the season with 29 goals and 56 assists. The two also helped the Canucks endure the strain of an NHL-record 14-game road trip that was made necessary by Vancouver hosting the Winter Olympic games, a trek in which the Canucks went 8-5-1.

The club also had one of the best home records in the league at 30-8-3.

Vancouver got plenty of offense from players not named Sedin, finishing second in the NHL with 268 goals, trailing only Washington's 313. Alex Burrows netted 35 goals playing alongside the Sedins, while center Ryan Kesler did his best Henrik impression with 25 goals and 50 assists.

Former Red Wing and first-year Canuck Mikael Samuelsson also reached the 30- goal mark for the first time in his career despite missing eight games due to a shoulder injury, while Mason Raymond rounds out the scoring (25 goals, 28 assists).

Samuelsson brings plenty of playoff experience thanks to his time in Detroit, as he has 13 goals and 35 points in 69 games. Vancouver will also look to Pavel Demitra, owner of 83 games and 53 points in the postseason.

Vancouver tied for 11th in the NHL with 218 goals allowed, and is a bit banged up at the blueline. Sami Salo (leg), Shane O'Brien (shoulder) and Aaron Rome (undisclosed) are all day-to-day with various injuries.

Christian Ehrhoff led all Vancouver defenders with 37 assists, 44 points and a plus-36 rating. Though he tweaked his knee prior to the end of the regular season, he should be ready to go for this one. That's good news for fellow defensemen Alexander Edler (5g, 37a), Kevin Bieksa (3g, 19a) and Andrew Alberts.

With the Sedin brothers making plays, Vancouver finished sixth on the power play at 20.9 percent, but the penalty kill struggled to an 18th-place finish at 81.6 percent.

LOS ANGELES KINGS (6th seed, West)

REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 46-27-9

2009 PLAYOFFS: Did not qualify

REVIEW: It sure has been a long while since the likes of Ziggy Palffy, Jason Allison, Adam Deadmarsh and Felix Potvin were leading the Los Angeles Kings' last playoff run.

Behind their best season since a 102-point campaign in 1990-91, the Kings return to the postseason for the first time since 2002 after collecting 46 wins and 101 points this year. Los Angeles' third-place Pacific Division finish was also its best since the lockout, ending an eight-year playoff drought that was both painful and fruitful for the Kings.

Losing does come with one advantage and Los Angeles is reaping that now. The Kings have been steadily rebuilding their team through the draft and the selling off of veterans, with five of their top six scorers 27 years of age or younger.

That includes 22-year-old Anze Kopitar, the Kings' 2005 first-round draft pick who set career highs across the board in goals (34), assists (47) and points (81).

Kopitar is joined by 20-year-old and 2008 second-overall selection Drew Doughty, who notched 16 goals, 43 assists and was second on the club with 59 points in his second NHL season. He also led the club with an average of 24 minutes and 58 seconds of ice time per game, teaming with 23-year-old Jack Johnson (8 goals, 28 assists) on Los Angles' young blueline.

Kopitar and 25-year-old captain Dustin Brown (24g, 32a) do have veteran help up front in Ryan Smyth (22g, 31a) and Justin Williams, who was limited to just 10 goals and 49 games due to injury. A pair of 27-year-olds in Alexander Frolov (19g, 32a) and Jarret Stoll (16g, 31a) round out the offensive depth at forward along with veteran center Michal Handzus.

Smyth and Handzus have both been through the playoff trenches before, as Smyth has 25 goals and 52 points in 81 postseason contests and Handzus adding 25 points in 60 games. Smyth and Stoll both played for Edmonton when it reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 2006.

While Johnson and Doughty tend to lean towards offense from the back end, the Kings have their share of shut-down defenders too. Rob Scuderi was a plus-16 in his first season with the Kings after winning the Cup with the Penguins last year, while Sean O'Donnell has a team-leading 87 playoff games under his belt.

Randy Jones and Matt Greene also patrol the blueline for the Kings, and they will try to keep things clear for 24-year-old goaltender Jonathan Quick.

Quick had one of the best seasons in franchise history, setting new records with 39 wins, 4,258 minutes played and 72 games. Quick ended the season 39-24-7 with four shutouts, a 2.54 GAA and .907 save percentage. However, he will be making his playoff debut and enters the postseason knowing he went 0-3-3 over his final eight starts and was pulled early twice in that span.

Backup Erik Ersberg may need to be ready, but he has never played in the postseason either.

Like the Canucks, the Kings finished the regular season with a good power play (20.8 percent that ranked ninth) and a sub par penalty kill (80.3 percent that ranked 20th).

MATCHUP
The Canucks season-long success at home was evident to the Kings, who dropped both tests at GM Place this year by a combined 7-2 margin. Los Angeles lost three of four to Vancouver, but did post an 8-3 home victory in the final meeting on April 1.

Brown had a hat trick in that battle, but was held without a goal in the other three contests. Stoll and Kopitar both had a goal and two assists in the season series, while Frolov added a pair of goals and an assist. Quick was in net for all three losses, posting a 2.28 GAA.

Henrik Sedin led the Canucks with a goal and four assists versus the Kings, while Wellwood and Kesler notched four points each. Daniel Sedin played in just two of the four meetings, notching a pair of assists. Luongo went 2-1-0 versus the Kings with a 3.33 GAA thanks in part to allowing all eight goals in the April loss.

While Vancouver head coach Alain Vigneault has been to the postseason in three of the last four seasons, Kings bench master Terry Murray is back in the postseason for the first time since 1999-2000 with the Panthers. Murray did lead the Flyers to the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals.

The Kings and Canucks have met three times before in the postseason, with Los Angeles winning two of those series, but not since 1993, when Los Angeles was led by some guy named Wayne Gretzky.

Los Angeles' reward for reaching the postseason? How about a date with the top offensive club in the Western Conference. That should give the Kings an ominous feeling considering how Quick performed down the stretch. With Luongo at the other end for Vancouver, a high-scoring affair favors the Canucks.

predicted outcome: Canucks in 7

Stanley Cup Playoff Preview - Phoenix vs. Detroit

Stanley Cup Playoff Preview - Phoenix vs. Detroit

Stanley Cup Playoff Preview - Phoenix vs. Detroit

PHOENIX COYOTES (4th seed, West)

REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 50-25-7

2009 PLAYOFFS: Did not qualify

REVIEW: No, that is not a misprint. The Phoenix Coyotes are back in the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2002.

The Coyotes have gone from bankruptcy court to NHL ownership to postseason darlings in the span of an 82-game season that saw the club post franchise marks in wins (50) and points (107), emerging as surprise contenders for the Pacific Division title before settling into the Western Conference's fourth seed.

Now the franchise will be expected to win its first playoff series since 1987, when it was still the Winnipeg Jets. No pressure.

So how did the Coyotes get to this point?

General manager Don Maloney deserves a lion's share of the credit. When Wayne Gretzky stepped down as the club's head coach and director of hockey operations before the season, Maloney went out and got a proven winner to replace "The Great One" in Dave Tippett.

Tippett, who coached Pacific Division rival Dallas before coming to the desert, ranks second in the NHL in wins since the start of 2002-03 with 321, behind only Mike Babcock (325) of Detroit, and could land himself the Jack Adams Trophy as the league's top coach.

Starting late last year, Maloney started adding to a solid core that included veterans Shane Doan, Ed Jovanovski and Ilya Bryzgalov by bringing in the likes of Matthew Lombardi, Scottie Upshall and Radim Vrbata among others.

And, Maloney was perhaps the biggest winner at the trade deadline, making numerous trades and hitting home runs by adding Wojtek Wolski, Lee Stempniak and Derek Morris in separate pickups.

Stempniak especially shined after being acquired from the Maple Leafs, going off for 14 goals in 18 games with the Coyotes after posting just 14 goals in 62 games with Toronto this year.

Wolski added six goals and 18 points in 18 games since coming over from Colorado, while Morris logged nearly 20 minutes of ice time for Phoenix to take some of the pressure off of Jovanovski and Keith Yandle.

Phoenix, though, might only go as far as Shane Doan's 33-year-old legs can carry them. A member of the franchise since it was located in Winnipeg, the Coyotes captain logged 18 goals and 55 points while skating in all 82 games.

Doan will have help. In addition to the late-comers, Matthew Lombardi posted 19 goals and 34 assists in 78 games, while Vrbata added a team-leading 24 goals and 43 points in 82 games. Upshall was also contributing nicely with 18 goals in 49 games before going down with a season-ending knee injury.

However, it likely won't be offense that will carry the Coyotes. While they ranked just 24th in the NHL with 211 goals, they allowed the third-fewest goals in the league at 196.

Bryzgalov will man the pipes after a 42-20-6 season that saw him post a 2.29 goals-against average (sixth-best in the league) and .920 save percentage. He also finished second in the NHL with eight shutouts and has been very good in the playoffs before coming over to Phoenix.

Bryzgalov got into 16 games with the Ducks in the 2006 and '07 playoffs, going 9-5 with a 1.68 GAA and three shutouts.

He'll have some playoff experience in front of him in Jovanovski (58 playoff games) and Adrian Aucoin (40 games), while the Coyotes could also slide trade deadline pickup Mathieu Schneider, owner of 111 career playoff games, in if necessary.

Jovanovski ended with 34 points in the regular season, while Yandle led all Phoenix blueliners with 41. Add in shot-block specialist Zbynek Michalek and the Coyotes come in with an underrated defense.

That mentality also carries over to special teams, where Phoenix was sixth on the penalty kill (84.5 percent) while finishing near the bottom on the power play (14.6 percent).

DETROIT RED WINGS (5th seed, West)

REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 44-24-14

2009 PLAYOFFS: Defeated Columbus 4-0 in conference quarterfinals; defeated Anaheim 4-3 in conference semifinals; defeated Chicago 4-1 in conference finals; lost to Pittsburgh 4-3 in Stanley Cup Finals

REVIEW: No that is not a misprint. The defending Western Conference champion Detroit Red Wings enter the 2010 playoffs as the fifth seed and on the road.

After some early-season misfortunes, they'll take it.

Though the Red Wings had their eight-year run as Central Division champions end, and enter the postseason lower than a two seed for the first time since a fourth-place finish in 2002, the fact that Detroit is where it is despite losing over 300 man-games to injury is pretty remarkable.

And the team didn't just finish strong; it ended playing some of its best hockey of the season. In fact, the Red Wings were one point back of a playoff spot heading into the Olympic break, but went 16-3-2 after the breather, including a 10-1-1 mark over their final 12 games of the regular season.

The Red Wings are also healthy. Johan Franzen managed 21 points in 27 games after missing the first 55 games due to left knee surgery, while Valtteri Filppula, Dan Cleary, Niklas Kronwall, Jason Williams and Kirk Maltby all played in less than 65 games this year. All should be ready for this series.

Injury, as well as offseason losses of Marian Hossa, Mikael Samuelsson and Jiri Hudler, took its toll on Detroit's offense, which finished just 14th with 223 goals scored. After having four 30-goal scorers a year ago, Pavel Datsyuk led the club with 27 goals and was tied with Henrik Zetterberg for the team lead with 70 points.

Tomas Holmstrom also had a solid season with 25 goals and 45 points, while Todd Bertuzzi added 18 goals and Filppula ended with 11.

It wouldn't be playoff hockey without Nicklas Lidstrom, a multiple Norris Trophy winner who leads all of this year's playoff participants in postseason games (235) and points (165) while coming in second behind Boston's Mark Recchi with 46 goals.

Lidstrom's regular-season point total was down to just 49 this year, his lowest output since 2003-04, while fellow blueliner Brian Rafalski had 42. Still, the duo remain reliable rocks at the blueline, while Brad Stuart, Brett Lebda, Jonathan Ericsson and Kronwall round out a defensive unit that was seventh in goals allowed (207).

The biggest question for the Red Wings could come in goal, where rookie Jimmy Howard enters as the No. 1 over veteran Chris Osgood, and will be making his postseason debut. Howard won the role after going 37-15-10 with a 2.26 GAA and .924 save percentage, winning 10 of his final 11 starts.

It is unknown if Howard will be on a short leash due to his playoff inexperience and Osgood did rebound from a sub par 2008-09 season to lead the Red Wings to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Osgood is 74-49 in 129 career playoff games with a 2.09 GAA and 15 shutouts. That includes a 6-3 mark in nine postseason battles with the Coyotes franchise.

Detroit's power play was ninth in the league during the regular season at 19.2 percent, while the club finished 10th on the penalty kill at 83.9 percent.

MATCHUP
Detroit and Phoenix split four regular-season meetings this year, though both of the Coyotes wins came in overtime. One bright spot for the Coyotes versus the Red Wings was their power play, which clicked at a 26.7 percent in the series.

Doan was Phoenix's leading scorer versus Detroit with a goal and four assists, while Lombardi was second with two goals and four points. Yandle chipped in from the blue line with two goals and an assist and Bryzgalov started all four games, posting a 2.95 GAA.

Holmstrom had a team-best three goals versus the Coyotes, while Datsyuk was tops with six points in the season series off two goals and four assists. Zetterberg managed four assists in three games, while Lidstrom had two goals and two assists in the four meetings. Howard started three of the four games, going 2-0-1 with a 2.60 GAA.

The Red Wings and Coyotes will be meeting in the postseason for just the third time and first since Detroit eliminated Phoenix in six games in the 1998 conference quarterfinals. Detroit also finished off Winnipeg in six games of the opening round of the 1996 playoffs.

It's almost a shame that the Coyotes pull such a tough draw in the first round, as the Red Wings are much better than their fifth seed would show. Bryzgalov will need to steal maybe more than one game for Phoenix to have a chance, and some playoff jitters by Howard would help.

However, the Red Wings have the talent and experience to make this a potentially short series.

predicted outcome: Red Wings in 5
