Nik Turley will be called up Sunday to start against the Giants in San Francisco, according to the Twins. It will be Turley?s major league debut.

Turley has outstanding numbers this season, splitting his time between Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Rochester. In 52.2 IP across the two levels, Turley has a combined 2.05 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and a very high 14.4 K/9.

In his last start Tuesday against Scranton/Wilkes Barre (the Yankees Triple-A affiliate), Turley put up a dominant performance. In 6 scoreless innings, he struck out 15 batters, allowing four hits and two walks. Among his strikeout victims were Gleyber Torres (2 Ks) and Clint Frazier (3 Ks), the Yankees? top two prospects. MLB.com rates Torres and Frazier as the No. 3 and No. 24 prospects in baseball, respectively.

Turley is a newcomer to the organization and will have to be added to the 40-man roster. The Twins signed him out of independent baseball this offseason. He came up in the Yankees? system, and has also pitched in the Giants and Red Sox systems. The 27-year-old has a career 3.50 ERA across 10 minor league seasons.

He's evidently got some perseverance to stick around 10 years in the minors.

Nik Turley was drafted in the 50th round, the sort of guy, if optimistic, you expect might bounce around in the minors for 10 years, then retire...but no, something clicked and he suddenly has this incredible strikeout rate, and not giving up many hits or runs either (tho some in long relief, not starts). He's still using his fastball/curve ball combination to do it, as always did...So no idea what's going on.

Batters seeing these type of southpaw starters generally have problems the first few times at bat vs them...And SF's offense not been much of late, especially against lefties. Since Cain usually much better at home, especially after a bad road start, the "no run 1st inning" and under 5 innings are good bets I think.....
