Western Michigan headed to NIT

Western Michigan will face Marquette the first round of the NIT at 9 p.m. on Monday night at the Bradley Center, the teams announced.

Marquette (19-11) and Western (19-12) have played 28 times, with Marquette holding a 21-7 series advantage.

Marquette will make its 38th postseason appearance and its 14th in the postseason NIT. It lost to Iowa State in the NIT quarterfinals last season, one year after reaching the NCAA Final Four.

Western, a NCAA Tournament team in 2004, will make its third appearance in the postseason NIT.

AROUND THE NATION
Arkansas Will Refuse Invitation to the NIT

From Associated Press

Arkansas will not accept an invitation to the NIT because the Razorbacks are "emotionally and physically exhausted," Coach Stan Heath said Friday.

Arkansas (18-12) was eliminated from the Southeastern Conference tournament on Thursday night, losing to Tennessee, 65-46.

Heath, in his third season since taking over for the fired Nolan Richardson, had said his goal was to have Arkansas back in the NCAA tournament by this season. The Razorbacks won a national title in 1994 and were second in 1995, but they haven't won an NCAA tournament game since beating Siena in the first round in 1999. They haven't reached the NCAA tournament since 2001.

Missouri gets the nod from the NIT

By MIKE DeARMOND The Kansas City Star

Shortly after 7:30 Sunday night, Missouri got the call it was expecting from the National Invitation Tournament.

“We are in,” said Mario Moccia, senior associate athletic director for MU.

Moccia didn't know the details yet, such as when, where and the opponent.

“But we'll let you know as soon as we know,” he told The Star.

The bid, which was immediately accepted by MU, means that the Tigers men's basketball team will play in the postseason for a seventh straight year. MU made the NCAA Tournament the final year under coach Norm Stewart, the first four years under coach Quin Snyder and last season made the NIT under Snyder.

MU finished the regular season 16-16, and a year ago the NIT picked only one team, Villanova, with a .500 record. But as Moccia confirmed, Missouri is in.
