BGU opens at -4. I love Bowling Green in this spot. An unranked home favorite over a ranked opponent. Anyone else like Bowling Green?

Does anyone know the winning percentage ats of unranked home favorite over ranked opponents.

bowling green probably gonna by my strongest play of next weekend. i was hoping bgsu would open around (-3) or a little less, but the fact that it opened at (-4) kinda makes me like bgsu even more, because that line is clearly gonna attract a lot of public money on northern.

ive got all the respect in the world for niu. novak has done a phenomenal job with that program and they are a legit top 25 kind of team. but bowling green is an awfully tough place to play. and that stadium is gonna be jacked. falcons have been a big time moneymaker at home over the last few years. i think niu is gonna have major problems with the spread offense of bgsu. harris could have a big day.

also - to answer your question, i dont know what the % is in football. i know its something to keep an eye on in college basketball, as it happens much more frequently (since they play more games, as opposed to once a week in football). but the linesmaker clearly knows what hes doing by opening bowling green as the favorite here

just saw the AP poll a few minutes ago.

bowling green cracked the top 25 this week. theyre #23.

fwiw, espn gameday is going to be in bowling green this coming weekend:

ESPN's College Gameday Coming to Bowling Green
College Gameday and College Gameday Radio will air live from Doyt Perry Stadium next Saturday, Oct. 25.

Oct. 19, 2003

Toledo
k gman, lets break this game down...

as you said earlier, there is a reason why BG is favored against a highly ranked team. A team with the best running back in the MAC and one of the better defenses.

Whats at stake:

a chance to host the MAC Championship game -- HOWEVER, the road to that goes through Toledo ;) BG has 2 tough games coming up for them. This week with NIU and next week they gotta play at Miami. But everybodys motto this year is "win the west" - in fact, iam getting sick of hearing that.

Offensive Powers?:

This is hard to say who is more of a offensive weapon...NIUs players or BGs..buttt Iam gonna have to side with Bowling Green here. Josh Harris is amazing. He has ripped every single defense that he has seen - INCLUDING Ohio St's. He's a big QB, built alot like Rod Rutherford, but I think Harris is bigger then Rutherford, especially in the thighs and in the ass which is big because having a bigger lower body makes is difficult to tackle someone. Harris will have a few weapons to throw to, Cole Magner who had a career day against Ohio St. BJ Pope offers a good set of hands out of the backfield, very realible. And cant forget Charles Sharon, my favorite cuz he talks shit during the game lol. BJ Pope is not Mike Turner, but he can produce numbers out of the backfield, but more importantly, he`s a good blocker.

We all know about Mike Turner. I think he will get over 100 yards on Saturday against this defense. Obviously the Huskies are banged up - which is why I have been fading them. Not having Dan Sheldon is a big deal IMO. It wasnt a big deal last game as I thought it would be, but it`ll come and bite them when it counts. I still dont think Haldi is a quality QB. He gets too many kudos from the media.

Defense:

alright, gotta give this to NIU. I know BG is capable of being a good defense...but they havent showed it to me lately. Whats gonna be critical for BG backers is this....will Mitch Hewitt and Mike Malone play???? Their 2 best defensive players no doubt. They didnt play the last game. They are gonna be needed BADLY if BG is gonna have a chance to contain Turner.

NIU, we all know they are nailed with the injury bug. Dont think for 1 second that last week they did a good job. As I stated in another thread, the score is MISLEADING! Western drove into NIU redzone twice and twice picked off and twice turned into points. 28 point swing. Your prolly looking at the box score thinking, Western got -2 rushing yards???? wtf? Yea well, Phil Reed(top 5 back in the MAC) had to leave teh game with an injury early in the first quarter. Western had to sway away from the running game and had to throw the ball to play catch-up. And the week before, Central Michigan ripped them for over 200 yards rushing. So did Ohio, ya`ll see a trend here???

What this game will come down to:

Special Teams!! Dan Sheldon, one of the best kick returners in the NATION isnt playing in this game - so some mook will be running back kicks for the Huskies. But thats not the intangible here. For those who have been to a Bowling Green game before, you`ll know what Iam talking about. Looking at the early forecast, I see its gonna rain...with rain comes wind. That stadium is like a wind tunnel. Both ends of the stadiums are open and there is nothing but flat land laid alllll around the stadium. Kickers have a hard time kicking there. Its more of a swirly wind - hard to kick in, hard to throw. Few weeks ago with BG and Central Michigan....gman, we both saw a few missed field goals from 2 reliable kickers from short distance. Nobody really has no idea what Iam talking about - but trust me, the wind sucks coming right off of I-75.

Iam gonna wait to bet this cuz I think the line will drop due to the public hammering this game. Iam hoping for 3

Good Luck :)

hellah:

very solid stuff you posted. obviously, i agree with pretty much everything you said.

a few things to add.

**magner is nails. since hes white, he gets labeled with the
tag of "possession receiver", but he is really diverse player. his game against ohio state was incredible. he is not intimidated going over the middle and he catches everything thrown his way. its so apparant that magner is the receiver harris trusts most on that team. whenever they need a first down or someone to get the ball in traffic, harris looks for magner. hes not the most explosive guy (in comparison to sharon) but he is definitely the most reliable. he could really be an x-factor in that game. as you know, bg runs a lot of different packages with him, and he will line up in the backfield and run the ball or even take a few snaps at quarterback. just a tough matchup and it wouldnt surprise me to see him make a game changing play.

**we both agree that turner is gonna get his yards. partially because hes that good, but also because the falcons have shown to be a little vulnerable up front against the run. but i think bgsu is gonna stack the box and make haldi beat them. i just dont see the falcons letting turner run wild. niu is a little depleted because of injuries, and that sheldon loss could really show up here. whats weird about the bgsu defense is that they

**the wind could definitely be a factor in this game, and could wreak havoc on the kickers. youre right, its getting pretty fu/ckin cold in the area and the wind in northwest ohio is ridiculous at times. kickers really gonna have their work cut out for them. falcons hold the edge at the place kicking spot, but like you said, even a good kicker like suisham isnt immune to having trouble kicking in the wind at bowling green. that central michigan game was nuts. chip shot field goals being missed on both sides.

**niu definitely has the more favorable schedule as far as winning the west. they have a cake schedule after this game until they travel to toledo. bgsu cant afford to not take care of business here, as (like you said) they travel to oxford next week and then still have a tough game with toledo. fortunately, that one is at home, and as you know- the bgsu/toledo series has really been a home dominated series so i think bgsu can feel good about that one. but i gotta think brandon is stressing the fact that they gotta make sure they get this one at home. obviously, bgsu doesnt need any more motivation this week- with gameday coming and the falcons playing a top 15 team. but they still cant get caught looking to next week in miami.

.............................................

Have to disagree and say the public is hammering BG. Its the obvious play come on. That stadium , Josh Harris, spread fawking offense , wind , etc etc.....

and it seems to me if that wind is swirling around like you say it will be then BG will have a harder time passing, and Turner could run roughshod.

NI and the points look like they may take me to the ticket window.

how many people really know the BG runs a spread offense? that plays at that stadium? that does this and that?

i can tell you right now, half of toledo dont know cuz they dont care. they all kiss Ohio St and Michigans ass that they could care less about BG. And when they see NIU ranked and being on ESPN every week...they will take NIU....

been around this area too long to know. if folks dont know here...then what makes me think hey know across the nation?

honestly, i was hoping bgsu would come into the game unranked. but with both teams now being ranked- line may hold true at (-4) or so. was kinda hoping for an "unranked favorite" in bowling green. didnt happen though, as the AP poll put bgsu at #23.

the one thing i want to know is how miami, ohio isnt ranked.

i guess the logic is that bg has a big ten win (purdue) whereas miami got beat by iowa in the opener.

redhawks beat colorado state IN colorado state and have beat pounding the sh1t outta teams lately.

weird thing about this game is that if bowling green wins this game - theyll probably move up to about #17 or #18 in the country.

and then theyll go to miami next weekend and be underdogs by about 3 or 4 points to the redhawks

guess it just goes to show polls mean nothing.

still amazed miami isnt ranked though. they havent absolutely steamrolled teams since losing to iowa in the opener

you have a grudge against NIU ever since that Alabama game, and you havnt liked them from the very beginning. They are 7-0 .

You just want BG to kick their ass.
I have watched Josh Harris and he dont look the the next montana to me.

Thats a homer grudge play imo.

i wouldnt say that scott. I even took them the game after Bama...I took them -6.5 at home vs. Iowa St. I just happen to think NIU defense wont do anything to Harris and that if BG is up by 10 or more...NIU cant play catch-up

:)

scott:

you bring up a interesting point about grudges.

i think all of us as cappers are -- at times -- guilty of carrying grudges so to speak, and it can have an adverse affect on our capping.

i dont know/recall hellah's bets on or against niu, so im making the post completely aside from what youre referencing about him and niu. everything in this entire post has nothing to do with what you specifically referred to with hellah (niu). just making a general handicapping statement.

i think your point about grudges (as a whole) is valid.

sometimes we get burned by a team and -- out of spite -- we try to fade them the next week, with the belief that "theyre not that good". and sometimes we keep getting burned and burned. at some point, we just gotta give credit where credit is due and not throw our money against a team that keeps killing us.

i do my best to look objectively at each game.
one team i just cant win with this year is texas tech.
i dont know what to make of that team. i see such a soft bunch of pu$$ies on defense, and a very un-physical team. but they burned me twice in consecutive weeks and i simply will avoid their games from here on out. they just find a way to cover -- with this past week being in miraculous fashion. to me, i dont see how theyre favored at missouri this week. but im not going to chase any money after em by going anti-tech. their litmus test will come down the road when they play the bigger boys of the conference. for now, i learned me lesson in consecutive weeks. even though im not sold on em, i dont want to hold a grudge to where i fade em just to fade em.

i just think you bring up a very good point.

conversely, i think this applies to a team that is winning for you for a couple weeks. yes, its sometimes nice to ride a hot team, but sometimes we dont always look objectively at a teams deficiencies. we just see them cover for us and we ride em again. which isnt necessarily bad if you honestly believe theyre in a good spot. the right team doesnt always cover though. its important to learn as much from your WINS as it is from your losses. i think as cappers, theres always something to learn from a win. just because you cash a ticket doesnt mean you were on the right side, or doesnt mean your team is playing well or will necessarily play well its next game. i try to look with a discerning eye on my wins a lot of the time -- asking myself rhetorically "was my team superior in all facets of the game today...or were they the beneficiary of some mistakes by their opponent or a fluke comeback or some fluke plays"

i guess what im trying to say is theres a lot to learn from both winning plays and losing plays. your point about not holding grudges against teams that beat us is a solid point. just like we cant look with rose colored glasses on the teams that cover for us, because if we do that, were vulnerable to overrating a team just because they win a few bucks for us.

If its and butts were candy and nuts we would all be happy cappers.

Your logic is weak.

I have seen hellah10 do this before so I have to be watchful. and the fact remains heallah10 likes this Josh Harris way too much imo.

Alabama play affected him . thats not why to make the play.

just relax hellah10 it gets better.

"Northern Illinois @ Alabama

Well here`s an interesting match-up huh? All MAC-Mighty NIU travels to Tuscaloosa to face the Tide. NIU coming off a buy week before destorying Tennessee Tech - Mike Turner got 134 yards, and Jash Haldi threw for 252 yards. Not bad?? Yea I guess not. Beating Maryland isnt too shabby either, but was Maryland looking ahead to Florida St??? Perhaps - none-the-less a win is a win.

However....

This isnt Maryland nor is it Tennessee Tech...this is BAMA. The Dirtay Souf where they live on tradition and have some of the deepest roots there is in college football. Bama coming off an impressive victory over Fat Ass Jared Lorenzen and only holding them to 17 points. But does that really surprise anybody?? Certainly not me, Bama always has a good pass rush and Lorenzen sure as hell found that out Saturday. Kentucky had just 6 yards and no first downs on its first four possessions before Lorenzen got the offense going with his arm and his legs.

How does NIU match-up with Bama??? Well...they dont lol. Ive watched Bama on TV against Oklahoma and KY Jelly...and man they got speed. They dont have depth...but they sure have speed and talent!! Not bad for a team that was almost gonna get the death punishiment.

Bama WILL stop Mike Turner.

Considering NIUs offense goes through Mike Turner - even to setup the pass - its not gonna happen! Josh Haldi WILL GET SACKED AT LEAST 5 TIMES!!! Mark my words. He`s gonna face a defense that Wisconsin didnt bring...that Maryland wished they had this year...that any school in the MAC could dream of - Josh Haldi...welcome to Tuscaloosa, please pay me 5 units thank you
.....................................................

hellah10 just seems like you grudging here !
