Starting cornerback Carl Ivey has reportedly dropped out of the Kansas football program.
Ivey, a Texas native, is said to be going to Stephen F. Austin University,
which is a Division 1-AA program in Nacogdoches, Texas. Ivey would be able to play
this year if he makes the transition from D-1A to D-1AA.
Ivey started 10 games last season with two interceptions.

Redshirt junior defensive lineman Larry Simmons has left the team to concentrate on
his academics. Simmons was the Cavs? most experienced defensive lineman, but recently
lost his starting job in spring practice. Simmons indicated that his decision was purely
from an academic standpoint as he is on pace to graduate with his psychology degree next May.

Maryland quarterback could be ready to go

Maryland quarterback Chris Kelley could be ready to return for the season opener.
Kelley tore knee ligaments in the spring, and is rehabbing. If he continues to improve,
he could start against Notre Dame.-Steven Lassan

Cal's Callen transfers to Idaho State for fresh start

By Brian White Daily Californian
BERKELEY, Calif. (U-WIRE) -- Up near Memorial Stadium, Atari Callen sat and watched the sun set over the bay as he had many times before.

"I won't be seeing this for a while," he said, a tear forming in his eye.

After being declared academically ineligible for the 2002 season, the California junior cornerback has decided it is time to take his talents elsewhere.

He will travel to Pocatello, Idaho where he will play for the Division I-AA Idaho State Bengals.

The Bengals, who play in the Big Sky Conference with teams such as Sacramento State, finished with a 4-7 record last season.

"(Idaho) is the perfect place for me right now," Callen said. "I need to get away and clear my mind, start fresh."

In his two years playing at Cal, Callen proved to be one of the more consistent players on the field for the Bears. Last season, he led the team with eight pass breakups and added an interception.

Callen was also second on the team in kickoff return yardage and sixth in tackles.

**Apologies for the funky nature of this info. I put it in a text file and when I pasted in this thread, this is how it came out.

One more..

Virginia Tech DB tears knee
Junior corner and special teams player Eric Green suffered a torn ACL in a workout.
There's no timetable yet on whether he'll redshirt or when he might return.

Here is a couple notes from collegefootballnews about Callen and Ivey:

"Juniors Atari Callen and James Bethea return to their starting spots,
but neither plays the whole game with seniors Jemeel Powell and Ray Carmel
seeing equal time. Callen is the best pass defender, but he's nothing all that special."

"Junior Carl Ivey quit the team leaving his starting cornerback job open.
He was the team's best cover corner."
