Angels-Marlins

ANAHEIM: The Angels activated RHP Troy Percival from the 15-day DL and placed RHP Mickey Callaway on the 15-day DL. Percival had been on the DL since May 23 with a hip injury. ... Callaway wasn't surprised when the club placed him on the DL, his first stint since 1999. He reported stiffness and soreness in his right shoulder during and after pitching three innings in Thursday's 14-inning loss to the Expos. Doctors diagnosed him with tendinitis Friday. ... SS David Eckstein was out of the lineup for the second straight day following an injury to his left hand during batting practice Friday. Eckstein was bruised when he was hit by a line drive by Garret Anderson.

FLORIDA: 3B Mike Lowell is getting tired of the trade rumors, but he is trying not to allow them to affect his play. ``I hear them, but I just tune them out. I just try to play hard, I really don't think about all of that,'' said Lowell, who reportedly is being pursued by the Cubs and Dodgers. Lowell is in the final year of a $3.7 million contract, and the financially strapped Marlins are not expected to extend it. ``I can't control it, and since I can't, it doesn't bother me,'' he said. ``There have been so many different teams named that I kind of say it's bogus.'' ... Less than a week after striking out four times in one game, C Ivan Rodriguez hopes he is finding his swing. Rodriguez hit a three-run homer Friday, giving him a six-game hitting streak. He leads NL catchers in All-Star voting despite hitting .251 with seven home runs and 29 RBIs. ``When you're having a season like I am, you have to keep working, keep swinging the bat, not give up and stay strong. It's going to change.'' ... Florida pitchers had allowed one run in 19 innings and two runs in their last 23.

Red Sox-Brewers

BOSTON: Derek Lowe starts on three days' rest for the first time in his career Sunday at Milwaukee after throwing 85 pitches in seven innings Wednesday in an 8-3 victory at Pittsburgh. Lowe (5-3, 4.93 ERA) is 2-0 with a 2.76 ERA in his last four starts after posting a 6.53 ERA in his first eight starts. ... The Red Sox were 51-30 on the road last year, but through Friday's games were 15-17 away from Fenway Park this season. ... RHP Tim Wakefield sustained a deep contusion to his right ankle when hit by a pitch Friday while batting for the first time this season. He's not scheduled to miss a start but will be re-evaluated Sunday. X-rays were negative.

MILWAUKEE: Glendon Rusch, Sunday's starter, has struggled to a 1-8 record. He failed to hold a 5-0 lead in hilast start. ``We've done a lot with his mechanics,'' manager Ned Yost said. ``So I'm anxious for Glendon to start, to see if that's helped him.'' ... Rusch beat the Red Sox 2-0 in 2001 for the New York Mets, pitching eight innings, allowing one hit and striking out a career-high 10. ... Rickie Weeks, the second overall selection in Tuesday's draft, had an impressive workout with the team. The 20-year-old Weeks, who played at Southern University and spent the last two summers with Team USA, is unsigned but said he was eager to join the Brewers and work his way to the majors. ``That wasn't even in my wildest dreams,'' Weeks said of being the No. 2 choice after not being drafted out of high school in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Yankees-Cubs

NEW YORK: Roger Clemens was agitated by some ball-strike calls and appeared to yell at plate umpire Dan Iassogna after he was pulled in the seventh inning. Clemens refused to comment, but manager Joe Torre did. ``He thought some pitches were strikes. The adrenaline was flowing. He does a lot of talking, he is very animated when he pitches. He thought there were some pitches that were strikes,'' Torre said. ``I thought Roger, under the conditions and the ballpark and everything else, I thought pitched great. And it's unfortunate we came away with the loss.'' Iassogna said he didn't think Clemens was yelling at him. But in the sixth, the umpire said Clemens was unhappy with a fastball that was called a ball. As Clemens walked off the mound after the inning ended, he ``pointed and said, 'I hit my spot,''' Iassogna said. ... Torre said one of the reasons he removed Clemens in the seventh with a 1-0 lead was because he was bothered by an upper respiratory ailment. ``I asked him how he felt and he said, `All right,''' catcher Jorge Posada said. ``He said he was having a little shortness of breath a little bit.'' ... Posada and Derek Jeter said they'd like to put the 300-win hoopla behind them. Clemens has failed three straight times to get the milestone victory, and his next chance comes Friday night at home against the Cardinals. ``We want to get it done so we can go on with the season,'' Posada said. ... New York is 2-3 in interleague play this season and 61-46 since it began in 1997 -- 32-20 at Yankee Stadium and 29-26 on the road.

CHICAGO: C Damian Miller said he nearly got sick to his stomach as he watched teammate Hee Seop Choi lay motionless on the ground after colliding with Kerry Wood while they chased a popup. ``I felt bad because it was my ball,'' said Miller, who lost it in the sun. ``It was really ugly at first, his eyes rolled back.'' Miller said he and his teammates were all relieved when doctors asked Choi he if he knew his name and he was able to respond. ... Mark Grudzielanek returned to the team after missing three games for the birth of his son. He had a leadoff single in the first off Roger Clemens. ``To see my son born was the most amazing thing in my life, far more important than being here,'' Grudzielanek said. ... Eric Karros and Sammy Sosa said it was one of the most exciting games they'd ever played in. Sosa was able to play because he is appealing an eight-game suspension for using a corked bat. He had two singles off Clemens, the pitcher who served up his first major league homer back in 1989. ... Approximately 480 single-game media passes were issued. That number does not include season credentials. The only game at Wrigley Field with more media was the first night game (556) on Aug. 8, 1988. ... Kerry Wood has 32 career double-digit strikeout games, including six this season.

Rangers-Expos

TEXAS: SS Alex Rodriguez was out of the starting lineup with a bruised left knee. ``I tweaked it a little bit last night,'' he said. ``I'm not sure what play. It started swelling up last night, so I iced it and took anti-inflammatories.'' Rodriguez had played 445 consecutive games. Oakland's Miguel Tejada has the longest active streak of 491 games. ... The Rangers made two roster moves, activating right-hander Chan Ho Park and outfielder Doug Glanville from the 15-day disabled list. Texas optioned right-hander Reynaldo Garcia to Triple-A Oklahoma and sent outfielder Ryan Christenson outright to Oklahoma. ... Texas agreed to terms with two of its draft picks -- seventh-rounder RHP Matthew Farnum and 25th-rounder C Justin Hatcher.

MONTREAL: Vladimir Guerrero will undergo extensive therapy on his injured back the next two weeks. Guerrero, who went on the disabled list with a herniated disc Friday, flew to Florida to see back specialist Dr. Barth Green of the University of Miami on Saturday. ``The doctor is very optimistic about his condition,'' assistant GM Tony Siegle said. ... Ron Calloway got his third straight start in right field in place of Guerrero. Calloway homered the past two games. ``As long as he's swinging the bat well, he'll get a lot of time out there,'' manager Frank Robinson said. ``If he slacks off, I'll get someone else out there.'' ... Edwards Guzman arrived from Triple-A Edmonton to replace Guerrero. ``He's a utility-type guy,'' Robinson said. ``That's one of the reasons why he's here.'' ... Livan Hernandez, Jose Vidro, Javier Vazquez and Brian Schneider welcomed local kids to the game with free tickets and souvenirs as part of the ``Buses for Baseball'' program.

Orioles-Cardinals

BALTIMORE: The Orioles wore St. Louis Browns uniforms from 1944. The Browns moved to Baltimore following the 1953 season. The Browns and Cardinals met in the 1944 World Series. Orioles manager Mike Hargrove isn't a big fan of throwback days. ``I don't see any value in it,'' Hargrove said. ``Someone must like it, but I didn't have a vote.'' ... The Orioles will start right-hander Jason Johnson (5-3, 3.63) against Matt Morris (7-3, 2.57) in Sunday's series finale. Baltimore then goes home to Camden Yards for three games against the Chicago Cubs, followed by three against Milwaukee. ... The Orioles have had 10 or more hits in 14 of the last 17 games, including nine straight coming in. In those games, the Orioles hiked their team batting average from .251 to .275. ... Baltimore will host a reunion luncheon and autograph session June 28 at Camden Yards with members of the 1983 Orioles and Phillies World Series teams. Tickets for the luncheon are $60, with the proceeds benefiting charity. Members of those teams will play in a three-inning, old-timers game before the June 29 game.

ST. LOUIS: C Chris Widger said his right thumb was better after he bruised it making a throw on a steal attempt and was forced to leave Friday's game. Widger hit his hand on Melvin Mora's helmet on the follow-through of a throw to second. Widger jumped around in pain, then was taken out after manager Tony La Russa and trainer Barry Weinberg watched him make a handful of throws back to the mound. X-rays were negative. ``It's fine,'' Widger said. ``I was pretty scared at first. I was afraid to look at the thumb.'' ... After getting nobody out and allowing five runs in the ninth inning Thursday against Toronto, reliever Dustin Hermanson pitched two-thirds of an inning. ``He cares,'' La Russa said. ``It's people who don't care a darn that you have to worry about. Dustin cares.'' ... The Cardinals have a road trip coming up to Boston and New York in interleague action. As a kid, La Russa said he was a Yankees fan. ``Mantle was my man,'' La Russa said. ... La Russa predicts Tino Martinez will get a terrific welcome in New York. ``He's got four rings,'' La Russa said. ``The fans love him. The fans here are coming around. The silent majority is making some noise for him.''

Devil Rays-Astros

TAMPA BAY: INF-OF Jeff Liefer, claimed off waivers Friday from Montreal, was in the starting lineup at third base. Liefer hit .193 in 35 games for the Expos this season. ... The Devil Rays called up RHP Jorge Sosa from Triple-A Durham. Sosa was 1-5 with a 5.60 ERA in nine appearances, including five starts, for Tampa Bay earlier this season. At Durham, he was 1-1 with a 5.47 ERA. ... To make room on the roster, LHP Nick Bierbrodt was designated for assignment and INF Jason Smith was optioned to Durham.

HOUSTON: Richard Hidalgo, on the DL with tonsillitis and a virus since May 23, was activated and put in the starting lineup. To make room for him on the roster, the team sent Colin Porter down to Triple-A New Orleans. ... Billy Wagner got his 18th save in 19 chances and tied Dave Smith for the franchise record with 199.

Blue Jays-Reds

TORONTO: Add RHP Roy Halladay to the list of pitchers who believe the Cincinnati mound is flat. ``It was noticeably low, but I thought the slope was fine,'' he said after allowing one unearned run in eight innings of the Blue Jays' 9-2 win Friday. ``It's one of the lowest mounds I have seen. You can tell by standing on the side and looking at it. You get on it, and you feel like you're at eye level with the hitter. It's flat, but you adjust.'' Major league baseball has measured the mound and found the height and slope to be correct ... Carlos Delgado's first-inning homer Saturday was his 33rd in interleague play, snapping a tie with Texas' Rafael Palmeiro for the career interleague homer lead.

CINCINATTI: Adam Dunn's first multihit game as a leadoff hitter Friday, which included his first career leadoff home run, could mean that he's getting used to the role. ``I kind of like Dunn in that spot, especially if he starts swinging like he did (Friday) night,'' manager Bob Boone said Saturday. ``I like the look of it, even if it's not the prototype. I think he fits in there.'' Though Dunn drew a leadoff walk Saturday, Boone doesn't believe Dunn will spend his career in that role. ... RHP John Riedling complained about the Great American Ball Park mound following his loss to Toronto Friday, but Boone blamed poor mechanics that he said developed in Riedling's previous start at Florida. Riedling has allowed 16 hits and 12 earned runs in 6 2-3 innings over his last two starts.

Royals-Rockies

KANSAS CITY: OF Aaron Guiel had an autographed jersey of Colorado's Larry Walker hanging in his locker, a gift from Walker. Guiel grew up a few blocks from Walker in Maple Ridge, B.C., and Walker delivered the signed jersey before Saturday's first game of the doubleheader. ... D.J. Carrasco made his first career start in the second game of the doubleheader. Carrasco made his major league debut on April 2 against Chicago. ... Pena said he was vindicated in his use of 1B Mike Sweeney. Sweeney, who has an injured finger on his left hand, hit a grand slam in the second inning of Game 1. ``His hand is fine,'' Pena said. ... Sweeney's grand slam was the second of his career, the second by a Kansas City player this season and the 87th in franchise history. Dee Brown hit a grand slam for the Royals on April 9 at Detroit. ... Chris George (6-4), winner of the first game, leads the Royals in wins despite going 2-2 with a 10.17 ERA over his last six starts.

COLORADO: Charles Johnson's eighth-inning grand slam was the second of his career. His other came as a pinch-hitter May 13, 2001, at San Diego while he was playing for Florida. ... Kansas City's run off Justin Speier in the sixth inning snapped a franchise-record 16 1-3 scoreless innings streak by the Rockies' bullpen. The old mark of 14 2-3 innings was set June 20-25, 1995. ... In Game 2 of the doubleheader, RHP Todd Jones made his first career start in the majors. He has made 632 appearances in relief. His last start was in the minors in 1991. ... 2B Ronnie Belliard, on the DL with a sprained right ankle, has begun taking some grounders and hitting balls off a tee. ... RHP Denny Stark made his first rehab start at Double-A Tulsa on Friday night, giving up five runs -- three earned -- on four hits in 4 1-3 innings. Stark went on the DL March 29 with a strained upper back muscle. ... Outfield versatility is one reason the Rockies felt comfortable in sending Gabe Kapler to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Jay Payton, the starting left fielder, also has played center field, and he would be available to spell starting center fielder Preston Wilson. And infielder Juan Uribe, just off the disabled list (broken foot), also will be used in the outfield. Manager Clint Hurdle believes Uribe, a natural shortstop, also can play second base, third base and all three outfield positions. Uribe played some games in the outfield during his minor league rehab assignment. ``He doesn't have a lot of experience in the outfield, but I've seen the kid go out there and run the ball down,'' Hurdle said.

Twins-Padres

MINNESOTA: SS Chris Gomez was taken for an MRI exam of his right knee before the game. He was hurt trying to catch a bloop hit by the Padres' Ryan Klesko in the ninth inning Friday. Still, Gomez stayed in the game and delivered a two-run double in the 11th for a 7-5 victory. ... The Twins signed four players selected in this year's draft, including 14th-round pick Levale Speigner, a right-handed pitcher from Auburn.

SAN DIEGO: 3B Sean Burroughs returned to the starting lineup after being a late scratch Friday with a left forearm contusion. He eventually entered Friday's game as part of a double switch. ... San Diego honored 31 middle-school students who will each receive a $5,000 scholarship from the Padres Scholars program upon entering college. This is the ninth year of the program, which has awarded 259 scholarships.

Tigers-Giants

DETROIT: 3B Eric Munson was held out of the starting lineup for the third straight day with a strained groin but entered to pinch hit in the seventh and drove in a run. ... OF Bobby Higginson sat out with a sore left hamstring and will be out a couple games. ... Giants manager Felipe Alou worked as bench coach for the Tigers last season under Luis Pujols, now San Francisco's first-base coach. Alou considers Mike Maroth to be one of the best sinkerball pitchers in the American League despite his record. Maroth (1-11) was the loser in Saturday's 7-5 setback. ``He's 1-11 but he's a strong young man and he can handle it,'' Tigers manager Alan Trammell said. Maroth skipped his last start to rest a strained right hamstring he hurt against Cleveland on May 28, meaning he was pitching on nine days' rest. He gave up two runs and six hits in six innings. ``All you can do is keep going,'' Maroth said. ``What else can I do? You just fight through it and figure it will get better. It gets frustrating, the same questions after every start, but if I keep pitching well good things will happen.'' ... Dmitri Young extended his hitting streak to 11 games with an eighth-inning single.

SAN FRANCISCO: The Giants have had a penchant for hitting into double plays lately. They hit into three of the five double plays in Friday's game and another Saturday. ``Guatemalan bananas, they come in bunches. That's double-play ball,'' manager Felipe Alou said of the Giants' latest problem. ... Marquis Grissom extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a leadoff single in the first. Ray Durham followed with a single of his own to also reach 11 straight games with a hit. ... 1B J.T. Snow got the day off and Andres Galarraga started in his place on the last day his big brother, Alfonso, was visiting from Venezuela. Galarraga homered in the ninth for career No. 390. Alfonso considered the homer an early birthday present -- he turns 45 Monday. ``That was a gift for him,'' Galarraga said. ``It was special to play today, for him and for me. Any time you hit one out you feel good. Ten more until 400. We'll go have a good dinner.'' ... Barry Bonds, Grissom and Jose Cruz Jr. also homered. Bonds' hit his 628th career homer and also stole a base. The five-time MVP needs to steal two more bags to become the first player with 500 homers and 500 steals. He has five so far this season. ... Cruz's homer was his first since May 9 at Atlanta. The Giants' season high for homers in a game was five, April 7 vs. San Diego. ... Winning pitcher Jason Schmidt (5-2) singled in the second for his first hit of the season, breaking an 0-for-24 drought.

Indians-Diamondbacks

CLEVELAND: A throwing error by C Tim Laker that led to Arizona's first run was the 50th miscue by the Indians in 60 games. ... INF Ricky Gutierrez, who had neck surgery last year, went 0-for-3 for Triple-A Buffalo on Friday night in his second rehab game. He also made two diving catches without any problem. ... Rookie OF Jody Gerut extended his season-high hitting streak to nine games with a single in the seventh inning. ... CF Milton Bradley was 0-for-3, but walked twice to reach base in 44 of his 45 games. ... Cleveland is 55-53 in interleague play, 1-4 this season. ... 2B Brandon Phillips snapped an 0-for-29 skid Friday night, but is now 1-for-51 after going 0-for-4 in this game.

ARIZONA: Right-handed relievers Matt Mantei and Mike Koplove, both on the DL since May 28 with shoulder tendinitis, played catch before the game. Koplove felt fine afterward, but Mantei complained of pain. ``I came in thinking I'd feel a lot better after playing catch, but I didn't,'' Mantei said. Manager Bob Brenly said some discomfort could be expected, but Mantei will be checked again Sunday. ... RHP Bret Prinz threw 45 fastballs on the side. If Prinz, who strained his right groin in the seventh inning on Opening Day, feels strong after throwing on the side again on Tuesday and adding breaking balls and sliders, he plans to ask Brenly to throw BP instead of a third side session. ... CF Steve Finley was held out of a third straight game -- in part because of persistent hamstring pain and partly because Cleveland starter Brian Anderson is a left-hander. Robby Hammock, called up from Triple-A Tucson on Friday, made his second straight start in RF because of the vacancy created by Finley's problem. ... Brenly considered using 3B Shea Hillenbrand at first and starting Hammock at third to get more right-handed hitters in against Anderson. He reconsidered because 1B Mark Grace played well Friday night, going 2-for-4, and hits well against lefties. ... Rookie Robby Hammock has hit safely in eight of his 10 big league games. ... Winner Stephen Randolph (1-0) is one of 12 pitchers to win a game for the Diamondbacks. He and four others are rookies.

White Sox-Dodgers

CHICAGO: Manager Jerry Manuel addressed his team's recent struggles (six losses in seven games), saying, ``The character of the men here is better than we've had in the past. This team comes out fighting every game.'' ... With Magglio Ordonez in a 2-for-28 slump his last seven games, Manuel said the two talked about the right fielder's approach at the plate. ``I think he's trying to do too much and assuming the home run is the way out of it.'' ... Five of Chicago's last six games have been decided by two runs or fewer. The White Sox are 1-5 in those games. ... RHP Bartolo Colon (5-5, 3.96 ERA) entered with 12 complete games since the start of the 2002 season.

LOS ANGELES: With RHP Darren Dreifort lost for the remainder of the season, manager Jim Tracy talked about his options for a fifth starter, beginning with RHP Andy Ashby (0-3, 6.59), who started against the White Sox. ``We're not sending Andy out there with the thought that if he doesn't go five innings it will be an unsuccessful start. We've got protection for him,'' Tracy said. ... The Dodgers purchased the contract of LHP Wilson Alvarez from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned LHP Victor Alvarez to Las Vegas. Tracy said Alvarez would ``piggy-back'' with Ashby in the four starts Dreifort would have had between now and July 5. Alvarez was 5-1 with a 1.34 ERA at Las Vegas. ``Obviously, he's improved immensely in the year since he came off the disabled list with Tampa Bay,'' Tracy said. ... C Paul Lo Duca came in with a 15-game hitting streak, the longest by a Dodger since Adrian Beltre hit in 17 consecutive games from Aug. 25 to Sept. 18, 2001. ... Leadoff man Dave Roberts was rested. ``His legs were a little tired since coming off the DL (May 31),'' Tracy said. ``I definitely want him to be part of tomorrow's game.'' ... Beltre entered having hit safely in eight of his last 11 games, batting .342 (13-for-38) during that span.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Pirates-Braves

PITTSBURGH: The Pirates agreed to terms with 18th-round draft pick Pedro Powell, an outfielder from Middle Georgia College in Cochran. ... Pittsburgh had won only three of the previous 18 games at Turner Field before Saturday night. ... The Pirates are nearly at the year anniversary of their last complete game from a starter, when Jimmy Anderson went the distance June 16, 2002. They've been 151 straight games without one, the longest current streak in the majors, and the longest since the Tampa Bay Devil Rays went 194 straight. That streak ended May 19, 2002. ... RHP Josh Fogg (2-2) starts against the Braves on Sunday, and it'll be his third start since coming off the disabled list May 26. He had a strained left side. Both of his victories this season have come on the road.

ATLANTA: LF Chipper Jones and CF Andruw Jones, both hampered slightly by injuries, took extra fielding practice during BP. Third base coach Fredi Gonzalez stood behind second base and hit fly balls and grounders to both. Andruw Jones was back in the lineup after missing four starts with a hyperextended shoulder (he was scheduled to start Friday night's rainout), and Chipper Jones has a sore left wrist. ... With the rainout, RHP Russ Ortiz (7-3) takes his regular turn in the rotation Sunday and pushes rookie LHP Horacio Ramirez back until Wednesday. ... OF Darren Bragg, who started when Andruw Jones missed those games, is hitless in his past 12 at bats. ... The Braves already have two rainouts this season, the first time that's happened since 1994, when they played in old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

RE: FINANCIALLY STRAPPED MARLINS

RE: FINANCIALLY STRAPPED MARLINS

It's no wonder they are. I just come back from Miami Beach. I went went to Wednesday Nites Marlin /Oakland game and it was empty.

# 1-- Public Transportation Sucks in Miami. You have to leave early in the games to catch last buses. And you have to walk about a half a mile from the bus stop to the stadium.
Buses cut off at a certain hour on bus-routes to the stadium/and or they are far apart.

# 2-- If you drive to the statdium, they have the nerve to charge $9 parking in their stadium lot. They could at least waive that or reduce the fee. It is a huge parking area around the stadium.

#3-- The stadium takes a 1 1/2 hour to 3 hours to get to from south Miami or south Miami Beach by bus.

They got the Miami heat Centrally located in Downtown Miami but they got the Marlins in The Boone Docks.

man, you hit the nail square on the head, pujo21. anyone with any sense at all would have built the marlins stadium somewhere around hialeah. building way up north demonstrated a complete lack of knowledge of their potential market and fan base. build a park in the hispanic community and they would fall all over themselves to support it.

The Arizona Republic reports that Steve Finley (OF) Ari will probably be held out of today's game because of his cramped hamstring. The team is hoping to have him back on Tuesday.

Andrew Good (P) Ari made a surprise relief appearance Saturday, just three days after throwing 91 pitches in his start against the White Sox. He showed no ill effects, logging two scoreless innings. "It wasn't too bad," he said of his arm strength. "I thought I'd feel it a little bit, but I felt great. I've never been in this situation before, so it's all new to me. But so far, my arm has reacted really well. I'll go tomorrow if they need me." Good is scheduled to start Wednesday's game.

Jim Edmonds (OF) StL was ejected in the sixth inning Saturday for arguing a called third strike....no injury.

Luis Ayala (P) Mon notched his first career save Saturday. The opportunity fell to him because closer Rocky Biddle had already pitched two innings. Biddle might not be used sunday.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the Cubs will place Hee Seop Choi (1B) ChN on the disabled list today as a result of the concussion sustained in Saturday's collision. "When you have an injury to your head, you don't know the full ramifications [until the next day]," GM Jim Hendry said. "He was conscious. ? He was out for about four or five minutes, but he seems to be coherent. He is moving, though I don't know to what extent. At this point, he's certainly not in any threatening situation."

Manager Jimy Williams will hold Richard Hidalgo (OF) Hou out of today's game, according to the Houston Chronicle. Williams wants to work the outfielder, who recently spent three days in the hospital with a fever and tonsilitis, back into the mix slowly.

The degenerative hip of Troy Percival (P) Ana has caused the closer to revamp his delivery, and there were concerns that he would lose velocity and allow hitters to pick up his pitches a split-second earlier. His first inning of work since returning from the DL showed promise, though, as he worked a scoreless inning and hit 97 on the radar gun, according to the LA Times.

Tim Salmon (OF) Ana left Saturday's game after fouling a ball off his left ankle. X-rays ruled out a broken bone and the injury was diagnosed as a deep bruise, but he told the LA Times he did not expect to play today and was unsure how many days he might miss.

Manager Buck Showalter told the Dallas Morning News that he was considering holding Alex Rodriguez (SS) Tex out of Sunday's game so the All-Star could rest his bruised knee. A-Rod didn't start yesterday but did make an appearance as a pinch-hitter.

Juan Rincon (P) Min was unavailable to pitch on both Friday and Saturday. He's day-to-day with a sore neck.

Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune reports that the Cubs are willing to move both Juan Cruz and Bobby Hill in a trade for Mike Lowell.

The Cubs reportedly will place Hee Seop Choi on the disabled list on Sunday. Dave Kelton likely will be recalled from the minors on Sunday or Tuesday.
Kelton will probably play quite a bit of left field, allowing Moises Alou to rest his legs as a DH.

Chan Ho Park likely will return to the disabled list with more soreness in his back.
The injury flared up during Saturday's start. ''I worked so hard to get back to the game here,'' Park said. ''It got worse. This is making me mad.'' If Park does go on the DL, the Rangers likely will bring up Jamey Wright to replace him in the rotation. However, they may first call on a reliever to replace Park on the roster until the fifth starter is needed.

Lou Merloni is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Sunday for an injured right knee.
Merloni's injury apparently wasn't bad enough to get him sent to the DL instead of Ramon Vazquez, so maybe he'll be back in a couple of days.

Padres placed shortstop Ramon Vazquez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 1, with a strained abdominal muscle.
With Lou Merloni going down, the Padres could no longer afford to carry Vazquez on the active roster. As a result, he'll miss another eight days.
