I go frequently to the one on South Beach here. Well, used to since it's a little bit far now. Good steak, but think Morton's is better. And Ruth's Chris also better. Nothing wrong with S&W though... 'cept the price at all these places :)

Have heard that Ruth's Chris is awesome. Got to get there.

RRC

I will make it a point to hit The Chop House.

Thanks gents

I think each S&W may have it's own "master cheif". There may be a difference between each restaurants style of prepping and cooking things. The cheif that runs the Chicago restaurant is on a local radio station every week. He has never brought up anything about the restaurants from other cities.

Yeah, and I dumped close to 3 beans on Saturdays outing just between me and the girlfriend (and that didn't include the next two stops after dinner). :s4: but it was well worth it.

The 2 waiters were the most knowledgeable I've ever come across. They knew all the wine from a pretty massive list (for her) and everything about all the items on the menu. I've never heard the hired help actually give a personal opinion in a negative light about an item on a menu and steer (get it) you in the right direction in order to improve your experience.

I/O,

I agree. I've been to S&W, Ruth Chris, Chop House and Gene & Georgetti(sp?) all in Chicago. I'd rank S&W 1st, and then G&G, the Chop House and then Ruth Chris. I don't agree with Nosigar about RC. None of them has really lived up to their prices, at least that i've been to. Not really excited about Mortons either. Looks like Nosigar and myself diverge on more than just politics. :)

Best steak you've ever had and you haven't been to Chop House or Ruth's Chris? What are you comparing it to, Applebee's??

Chop House is my fav - put it on your list, IO.

Was reading the responses and noticed this. When I say this, I mean that none of the RC's live up to their prices. The rest do.

BBC, I agree about the Chop House, but none of the RC's have been anything special, IMO. They slather everything with butter, including the steaks. To me, it's not bad, but not nearly on par with the others mentioned here.

That's my problem with RC, too. They slather it and it comes out on a plate that might as well be a skillet just like Friday's or an Outback. Turns medium rare into medium well by the end of the meal. Tried to combat it in Detroit by ordering it rare - and then it came on a regular plate. Spent most of the night on the toilet.

I agree on the crowded part. Also very loud. I disagree on the food. I really like it.

Whatever the case, if I was with buddies, i'd take G&G and on a date Ruth's Chris or S&W or the Chop House.

Exactly. With RC's and Mortons, the gastro-intestinal issues flare up. At least for me and apparently for you as well. Not just Chicagos, but any of them. I'm thinking it's not a coincidence.

Gibson's is my favorite in Chicago. Sullivan's was not too bad either.

been to RC, Mortons, Sullivans, S&W and a slew of other places but never had a better steak than that of a few" local" joints with the meat right off the cow

the presentation and sides are definitely better at the chains, but for a good piece of meat, i will take a few homey places heads up

I went to Chop House when I went to USC/ND game in Oct. Excellent restaurant. Had half a steak and half prime rib. (shared both) The prime rib special is the best. For $30 you got 15 oz prime rib. What made it special is they sear the prime rib before serving it. WOW! First time I had that ever for prime rib and it was gooooood! They give very big portions and best of all it is not ala carte either. Salad and potato with it too! Hate it when meals are ala cart.

Somewhere in Corn Country
Mama--

Tappa's is decent but in no way the greatest steak house in the country. Michael Jordan's place in Grand Central Station serves a fantastic steak--with prices to match, of course...:mj07:

Out of the ones named here, my vote goes to Smith and Wollenskys as well.

Best steak I've ever eaten though would have to be from Rube's in Tama, Iowa. Just up the road from the Indian casino on highway 30...don't know for sure, but I wouldn't be suprised if the beef came from the heard across the street. Only in Iowa....

I think there should be two diferent catagories.

1. Corporate / Chain
2. Local

IMO The chains list as follows:

1. Flemmings
2. Mortons
3. Palm
4. Ruth

The locals in Nashville. My top three are:

1. Jimmy Kelly's
- The chateaubriand here is the best steak I have ever had.
2. Stock yard
- also the home of the oldest bottle of wine in America, awesome food.
3. Captiol Grille (not capital grill) in The Hermitage Hotel.
-Chef Sean Combs is truly a visionary

I have always perfered local places. Honestly, I enter franchises with a degree of predijuce. With that said, I would stack any of my local three places up against any corporate resturant.
