I was just wondering if anyone knows is there some type of litmus test that a country must pass to make it acceptable to have nuclear weapons? I was wondering this since the world seems oppossed to Iran restarting their nuclear energy program (although I believe they are more than likely also using this program to attempt to build a nuclear weapon), but what is the criteria that makes it unacceptable for Iran to arm itself whereas countries such as India and Pakistan are allowed to arm themselves with nuclear weapons and I think we would all agree that neither of those countries are stable and both have a high tension level amongst each other. My understanding is that there are eight countries that have nuclear capabilities: USA, UK, Russia, India, Pakistan, China, Israel and France, but in researching the subject I have not been able to find why it is acceptable for these countries to have nuclear arms.
