Billy Beane being touted as a genius can be summed up in three words....Hudson,Mulder,Zito.

Have read Moneyball twice....can't describe how much I despise that guy. What an egotistical pr*ck.

nothing against oakland, their fans, or really billy bean for that matter..but that book was arrogant and having the best three pitchers in baseball was probably more the reason they won the way they did

you guys need to give your head a shake

you are trash talking a team that pays their team a quarter of what they pay their team in new york and the yanks are shittin their pants to play them in the playoffs

i take offence to reading what you write

not sure how you call some one ego tistical etc
laughin at their record this year

your ignorance a joke

teams like oakland and minnesota give the little guy hope and being able to pay a team a quarter or half of what other teams are paid and be a top 5 team year after year is pretty genius in my book

but thats just my opinion

will be nice to see harden back and blanton become the gem he will become

horseshit reading this thread

Wormdog,

First off, I'm with you on the A's play tomorrow.

That being said, I think your post was off-base. "Moneyball" smacked of arrogance the entire way through... it was as if they thought they'd found the holy grail to winning baseball games with their forumlated OBP-based strategy. Now, it's beginning to look like they won in spite of that theory, not because of it, largely due to the fact that they happened to have three of the top pitchers in baseball that kept them in games they generally wouldn't have been in.

I don't think aligning Oakland with Minnesota is fair to the Twins, who have used the draft (and Rule 5 draft) and trades to build a team that will win over the long haul. At this point, the A's appear to be a team that was built to win as long as it had three great pitchers going every five days. Now that they don't have that, we're looking at a sub-.500 club.

its all a matter of opinion

they build their team and they got to give guys away because of lack of cash.

they have an all star team sitting on other teams, same story as the montreal expos.

in my opinion any team that can be there year after year on that payroll is doing something right, its a long season, we will see if they can turn it around,

they also built via draft, swisher, blanton et al.

they got some injuries and zito will turn it on

we will see

I think a lot of guys don't (or don't want to) realize the following:

1. Billy Beane didn't write "Moneyball", Michael Lewis did.
2. Most successfull teams in the league today use sabermetrics. The only difference between small market teams like Oakland and huge market teams like the Yankees, is that the Yanks have more money to use in acquiring guys that fit into the sabermetric/moneyball-philosophy. That was the whole point of moneyball, discover low-profile players that do the same job as star players at a lower price. Remember, if you don't get on base, you don't score runs. If you don't score runs, you don't win ballgames. Simple as that. Doesn't matter if your name is Alex Rodriguez or Keith Ginter.

With that being said, yes, the A's do suck this year. Take away the best starting pitchers from any team without replacing them, and it will be in serious trouble. Imagine Minnesota without Santana and Radke...

Wormdog...I am not ripping the A's. I am ripping Billy Beane for being egotistical. If you read Moneyball (I know Lewis was the author) you will also come to the conclusion Beane is obnoxiously arrogant. The way he rips his scouts and shows them zero respect is just one of the many ways his ego shines through. Have you read or heard any interviews with him??? To say he's NOT egotistical is ridiculous (sp?).

Most other general mgrs give at least some credit to their scouting depts (John Schuerholz and the twins gm come to mind).

Quite simply...with Billy it's always about Billy.

If Billy was just about Billy he would be somewhere else getting paid a helluva lot more money. It is easy to discuss the Big 3, but lots of teams could have had those guys and passed. Is he arrogant, sure. But the successful folks in sports almost always are, arent they?

As for the book, Lewis obviously wants to sell copies and dissing Beane helps that. The problem with the book though is the quotes of Beane in essence laughing at the same folks he has to deal with.

As a side note, last I checked the Red Sox are World Series Champs - who was the GM's mentor?

I am an As fan and frustrated about the past years, but this year is no surprise. Until the last couple of weeks (and Haren) the pitching had been pretty good. They just cant hit. Of course, I dont see folks on here ripping the Astros GM - you probably dont know who he is. With a payroll near the bottom the As were in the playoffs or contending for what, 6 years. It is easy to take shots now, but the GM that can do that did something right.

The As have new ownership, are looking to build a new stadium and spend more money. Time will tell.

2 points...

Lewis doesn't diss Beane in the book, he fawns all over him.

Who were the gms in Toronto and LA last year, and who was their mentor?

I guess this would be point 3. The reason Billy does not go get a lot more money elsewhere: he promised himself after signing his first contract as a player and not accept a college scholarship (to Stanford I believe) that he would never do something "just for the money" ever again. He also has stated a desire to remain close to his daughter who I believe lives in southern California.

Hudson...was not drafted by Beane who became gm in late 1997.

Mulder...2nd pick of the entire 1999 draft.

Zito...9th pick of the entire 1999 draft.

I don't see where "lots of teams could of had these guys and passed"
