The Treasury Department said Tuesday that the government took in a surplus of $2.9 billion in January, helped by nearly $9 billion more in Social Security taxes. Last month Congress and the White House allowed a temporary cut in Social Security taxes to expire.
The monthly surplus was the first since September.
Through the first four months of the 2013 budget year, the deficit has grown $290.4 billion. That's nearly $60 billion lower than the same period a year ago.
Revenue through those four months is 12.4 percent higher compared with the same period last year, while spending has grown only 3.5 percent.
The budget year began on Oct. 1.
The Congressional Budget Office forecasts that the deficit will total $845 billion when the budget year ends on Sept. 30. If correct, that would be first time the government has run annual deficit below $1 trillion since 2008.
The deficit is the amount the government must borrow when its expenses exceed its revenue. Each month's deficit is volatile and can be affected by calendar quirks that shift government spending or revenue from one month to another.
The annual deficit is projected to be smaller this year because the government is collecting more revenue this year, mainly because of faster job growth and higher taxes.

Ronnie
Just get in and go along for the ride.
Everything will be ok.
Where is Willard these days. On vacation in Cayman islands counting his money.
Trying to debate people who live in a non-reality based world, and for whom accepting reality is viewed with the same suspicion as a guillotine, is fruitless. The only argument they will accept is one that appeals to their irrational emotions. Nothing else will work. These GOPer's and TP type of leaders are masters of operating the strings of their bug-eyed base. The old guard GOP looks on in horror as any form of rationality is cut from their ranks like a nail to the quick. If /they/ cannot appeal to their ranks using rational argument, how much less can anyone else even hope to bring them to any form of fact-based reality. It's impossible.

....................................................................KOD you know I think you are alright in my book but how you can think Obama is good for this country really baffles me. I know full well why you would think the GOP's agenda is headed down the wrong path which may or not be. Romney may not have been the answer. But forget that part of it. Why in the hell do you think Obama is good for this nation?

Its pretty simple really.
I trust him. He is a good man and wants to make changes for the betterment of all the people in America. Being President is a very tough job and he has held up well.
He is intelligent and I believe in him to do the right things to get America going in the right directions.
I had the exact opposite feelings about George W .
I didnt trust anything he said or did and history tells us he was a horrible President with only his cronies and his own interests in mind.
But on the other hand I like Christie and I think I could vote for him vs Hillary.
But for now I will stand behind Obama and his thougtfull ways dealing with this crazy world we live in.
Term limits. Get the lobby shit out now !
Crooks and woebegones need not apply.

Jimmy Carter provides a pretty soft cushion so The Obama won't ever achieve the title of worse President ever.
He's not a bad man and he is not making bad decisions on purpose. He wasn't prepared to be President, wasn't experienced, had not built the relationships required to get things done and then he was taken over by bad advisors, dealt a bad hand when he started and then became exactly the opposite of the characteristics that he ran on.
He's dug in now to punish his "enemies" and try to leave a legacy of being admired based on ignoring the tough decisions and budget cuts that have to be made and spending his way into the hearts and minds of the masses.
It's working for him but, not for the country...and as sad as that is, the Republicans are too incompetent and inept to do a damn thing about it.
