Pity Really

It seems President Barack Obama ? who spoke often during the debate over health care reform of his mother and her fight to get insurance ? may have misspoken.

A new biography of the president?s mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, reports that she had full coverage for her uterine and ovarian cancer.

According to the Washington Post, biographer Janny Scott writes in her book ?A Singular Woman? that what Obama?s mother actually had to pay for were out-of-pocket expenses. She wasn?t fighting to get health insurance, but actually to get disability insurance payments. (10 questions with ?A Singular Woman? author Janny Scott)

Scott, who covered the 2008 presidential campaign as a reporter for the New York Times, based the section of her biography on correspondence between Dunham and her disability insurance carrier.

Obama used his mother to make an emotional argument to the American people about the need for health care reform. In a 2009 speech at the American Medical Association, Obama recalled watching as his mother ?fought cancer in her final days, spending time worrying whether her insurer would claim her illness was a preexisting condition.?

The White House doesn?t dispute Scott?s account. A spokesman, Nicholas Papas, said the book makes clear that Dunham racked up several hundred dollars every month in health-care costs not reimbursed by her insurance company. (Fact checking the Obama press conference)

Despite the biography?s claim that Dunham?s expenses in her final months of life had nothing to do with her preexisting condition, the spokesman stayed true to the White House?s talking points. ?The personal history of the president speaks powerfully to the impact of preexisting condition limits on insurance protection from health-care costs,? Papas said.

On Deficit, Americans Prefer Spending Cuts; Open to Tax Hikes

Twenty percent favor deficit reduction by cutting spending only

by Jeffrey M. Jones
PRINCETON, NJ -- Americans' preferences for deficit reduction clearly favor spending cuts to tax increases, but most Americans favor a mix of the two approaches. Twenty percent favor an approach that relies only on spending cuts and 4% favor an approach that uses tax increases alone.
srxuqqm8qkax643rbt9k-w.gif

These results are based on a July 7-10 Gallup poll, conducted as government leaders from both parties continued negotiating an agreement to raise the federal debt limit. Both Republicans and Democrats appear willing to raise the debt limit, provided the government outlines plans to significantly reduce federal deficits in the future. The parties generally agree on making deep spending cuts, but do not agree on whether tax increases should be included to help reach their target goals for deficit reduction. Many Republicans in Congress oppose any such tax increases; thus, the legislation may not pass if tax hikes are included.
Americans do not necessarily share this view, with 20% saying deficit reduction should come only through spending cuts. That percentage is a little higher, 26%, among those who identify as Republicans. Republicans do, however, tilt heavily in favor of reducing the deficit primarily if not exclusively with spending cuts (67%) as opposed to tax increases (3%). Fifty-one percent of independents share that preference. Democrats are most inclined to want equal amounts of spending cuts and tax increases (42%), though more favor a tilt toward spending cuts (33%) than tax increases (20%).

Media/polls makes things much more complicated than necessary.

Simple fact breaks it down to Tax and Spend.

Gumby/admin will without a doubt after 4 years-have contributed more to national debt than all previous presidents/admins combined.

The 2 years of Gumby/Pelosi passing anything unabated- put this country in such a hole it will take decades to recover-if ever.

The- yes we can-crew is directly responsible for what is to come.

--Another illusion--entitlements

People pay into social security and medicare most their lives--their income is directly proportional to what they pay in.

Medicade and welfare on other hand--for most part- recipients have contributed zilch other that throwing heels up in air and yelling whose your daddy--their income is generally directly proportional to illegitimate kids they have.

Yet we have for most part both parties discussing cutting benefits people have worked/contributed to--and very little discussion on cutting the latter.

I must say I am a bit at odds with GOP on even looking at ssn and medicare while ignoring medicade/welfare for most.

--also believe it is political mistake--as your medicade/welfare base will always vote Democratic regardless of what rebs do.

You're such a partisan hack.

We were losing 750,000 jobs a month when Bush left office, fighting two unfunded wars, the housing market had just collapsed, the financial sector had just melted down, the auto industry was on life-support, and yet we had just had 8 years of Bush tax cuts.

So riddle me this Budweiserman... If tax cuts and deregulation create jobs and grow the economy, then why was the economy in the condition it was in when Bush left office?

As John Kenneth Galbraith said... "Nothing is so admirable in politics as a short memory".

Also you might note 2008 had changing of gaurd in congress--when Dems ranted about worst job record since great depression (with GOP having 4% unemployment despite perils noted above)--then you proceeded to get in power and in fact deliver worst job #'s since great depression--along with creating more debt than all previous admins combined.

Now you can do your liberal 2 step and dance around and try to stear away from the facts-

--but everyone knows they are straightforward and results is obvious.

The bursting of the dotcom bubble was nothing more than a market correction. On the other hand, what the policies of the Bush Administration did to the economy was criminal and everyone but partisan hacks like you knows it.
