Obama Compares Virginia Tech Massacre to Outsourcing
Radley Balko | April 17, 2007, 5:28pm
This, taken from a speech today from Barack Obama, isn't just ignorant, it's exploitative and offensive:

"There's also another kind of violence that we're going to have to think about. It's not necessarily the physical violence, but the violence that we perpetrate on each other in other ways," he said, and goes on to catalogue other forms of "violence."

There's the "verbal violence" of Imus.

There's "the violence of men and women who have worked all their lives and suddenly have the rug pulled out from under them because their job is moved to another country."

Ugh. Words aren't violence. And to suggest they are betrays a nonchalance about the First Amendment that's rather disturbing (but not surprising given the generally hysterical reactions to Imus). After all, if words are as bad as guns, if Imus' comments were even remotely comparable to the Virginia Tech slaughter, then words, like guns, should be heavily regulated, right? Or even banned?

The outsourcing line was even worse. No one has the "right" to be paid by someone else for their labor. Employment in a free market is peaceful and voluntary, on both sides. So is the decision to stop that agreement, both for the laborer, who may find a better job, or for the employer, who may find someone who can do the job better, or cheaper, or both. There's nothing remotely violent about any of it. To compare a business decision to employ cheaper labor to the senseless slaughter of innocents--even if by way of tortured, nonsensical metaphor--is really reprehensible. It reeks of exploitation. "See, the people who are really upset about this massacre, the people who really care about the victims, they vote for me, and take the same position I do on controversial issues."

Also, does this also make the poor people in developing countries who take outsourced jobs complicit in the "violence?"

Jesus. Couldn't the politicians wait a full 48 hours before propping up the dead for campaign speeches?

Ben Smith suggests this speech showcases what many people love about Obama. To me, it shows that the guy is still bush-league.

Havent listened to the entire speech, but have read the text.
Can someone explain why the hell you even need to mention outsourcing and imus in the same breath as this massacre?
But maybe i am reading this wrong.
You tell me, but i think i may be right.

Have to agree with you Sam. This guy has lost any chance of getting my support the past few days. I dunno who his handlers are but they have to come up with better stuff than this.

I'm white and he hasn't lost my vote yet. As for getting piped in the ass, all I can say is what goes around comes around.

Obama hasn't lost my vote either. I never intended to vote for him anyway.

But Obama will lose white votes.

Don Imus nappy crack was quoted directly from a Spike Lee Movie. IMUS Sidekick Bernard McGuirk said it's "a Spike Lee Thing"

I wonder if OBAMA knew this ,when he started doing double dutch on IMUS? And would OBAMA turn on his brotha SPIKE ? Would Obama make demands on Brotha Spike to be punished the same way since Spike is The source for Don Imus ? The answer is no.

IT's just more of the double standard that exists.

AND REALLY..you now can't even say the word "Articulate" to /about a black person.

GIVE ME A BREAK :142smilie

In away we do cause so much that happens with our words and nasty attitudes towards some one who has a different opinion then yourself. Or the bullies who pound on with words some weaker guy or gal. And some time force. And they go on checked. Then some guy blows shows up at high school and shoots some kids. We took care of some those bullies back in late 50's and early 60's. And no one got shot.

Not to make this any type of a numbers by race thing....

Obama was also catching it from the "black" leadership for not talking up "black" issues loudly enough. I think he's all over the road of late and burning all kinds of bridges in all races. I got a feeling they have some kind of big picture plan with the way his handlers have been directing him but I don't get it. It might be all for some kind of money grab of some sort (up against Hillary and all) or it's all directed at her base and how she's speaking out on the issues. It's almost like he had to get in something (lame) on what happened and relate it to the constituents before Lucifer did. I think he's showing how much of a rookie he is at this gig. Not good for the long haul in this card game. If Hillary is smart, she's says nothing.

i remember people stating that they will vote for obama once he announced that he was running...without knowing anything about him...i always found that to be strange

now people are going to learn alot about obama by him being in the national spotlight for the first time ever...& they'll see his inexperience at work.

Agreed. But guns are more available now. Too available. For instance. Cho bought one gun at a Virginia store, the other at a Wisconsin online gun store. They did a background check on Cho but only 17 states report psychological problems. The effect of having different gun laws in every state is that we end up with essentially no gun laws at all. Exactly what the NRA wants. Another example: a gun gets brought into a Chicago school the other day. The kid meant no harm to anyone, but the gun discharged accidently and a person was injured. How did the gun get in? Apparently, the security guard manning the metal detector stepped away and a teacher was manning the post and didn't catch it. Jesus, were talking about schools... metal detector's, security guards. Other countries get by without all of this. Maybe we need to be looking to see what they do differently.
