I don't know why one has not been in place before now? Living in Las Vegas is like living on an island with nothing around it. I-15 is packed with traffic every weekend and holidays, forget it. If there were a high speed train running between LA and Las Vegas it would save time and money. High speed rail system connecting all major cities, sweet.

"If you think about the Midwest, think about right here, what we've got is all kind of towns that we could connect," Obama said. "All of these cities are, they basically take in the air about 45 minutes to an hour to fly."

"But by the time you get to the airport," Obama continued, "take off your shoes, get to the terminal, realize that your flight's been delayed two hours, go pay $10 for a cup of coffee, and a sandwich for another $10, come back, you get on the plane, you're sitting on the tarmac for another 25 minutes, you finally take off, you're circling above the city for another half hour, when you land they can't find your luggage, and then you get to where you're going -- by the time it's all done it's a five-hour trip! ?So the time is right now for us to start thinking about high-speed rail as an alternative to air transportation, connecting all these cities and think about what a great project that would be in terms of rebuilding America." -Barack Obama.

If Japan and the French can make itwork we can to. And should have it in some areas. More Jobs.
And plenty of cash when you included private money and all the money Iraq will pay back. And of course we won't be throwing 12 billion a month down that rat hole Iraq.

Can you even be serious? After the spending of the last 7.5 years? Just asking.

wrong on each and every count(but i don`t feel like hacking out the iraq war for the thousandth time)....tax breaks for the oil companies?....

make em pay,right,wocky?...

you know how much of "big oil`s windfall already goes to the gov`t?...the more profit the companies earn, the more corporate income tax they pay...

but to add a five-year tax increase on top of that to pay for a one-year gift to voters would, indeed, increase the cost of doing business...

you don`t think that cost would be passed along in forgone investment in new production, lower dividends for pension funds and other shareholders, and higher prices at the pump?.....

- thus socking it to the consumers whom the plan is supposed to help?....

you`re a deep thinker,bud...no doubt...

and btw.. you meant the "proven" missile defense systems...ask stevie`s buddy`s the japanese(and putin..he`s having a baby over missile defense)...

.i wonder why obama`s dropping like a turd from a tall cow`s ass in the polls?...

wha` happened?...this was supposed to be a bag shot...hell,i thought it was a bag shot...

can`t hammer iraq anymore....

he`s plateauing...because the candidates are reaching the point where they've got to start laying out policy.....at some point,he`ll HAVE to debate the old man...

gonna be tough to "buy" eneough voters to win without hillary and bill.....

she`s got bock by the short hairs...:142smilie

it`s gonna get alot more interesting than i ever suspected it could...

So, because the US and Japan have engaged in a joint R&D effort, you believe that we can reliably take down ICBM's in a real world situation? Good for you.

If you want the reality of what we have to show for our 100's of billions spent you can look into it. I will even give you a head start

http://www.cdi.org/program/document.cfm?DocumentID=3983&from_page=../index.cfm

"One potentially fatal weakness of the GMD system is its susceptibility to countermeasures. Discrimination is very hard for the interceptor, more so if its target is surrounded by decoys or other objects that make it more difficult to determine which object is the actual threat. Any country that can make a rudimentary ICBM is also capable of launching a few countermeasures, so any missile defense system that wants to be able to defend against real-world threats should be capable of handling countermeasures. The U.S. system cannot. It has actually regressed in its testing of the GMD system, in that it has gone from using several decoys during a flight test in the early stages of the system (albeit decoys that were rigged to look very different from the test target so that the interceptor was absolutely certain of where to go), to no decoys used during the September 2006 test. Usually weapons systems start off with easy tests and get more demanding as the system progresses, not the other way around."

But putting missile defense and our failed energy policy aside (created behind closed doors with execs from big oil and Dick "big oil" Cheney)

Please refute the following facts:

Government spending has DOUBLED under the current administration.

The war in Iraq will end up costing the US taxpayers upwards of 3 trillion dollars with 100+ billion going to private contractors.
(see Joseph Stiglitz's up coming book Our 'Three Trillion Dollar War')
essay link

?The military-industrial-complex [would] cause military spending to be driven not by national security needs but by a network of weapons makers, lobbyists and elected officials.? ? Dwight D. Eisenhower

The current administration has increased the US debt by 80%

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/jul/29/bush-successor-faces-massive-debt/?page=2

"He inherited four consecutive years of budget surpluses, including a record surplus of $236 billion in 2000, and President Clinton notched a total surplus of $63 billion for his eight years in office. Based on the latest estimates, the cumulative budget deficits during Mr. Bush's two terms will exceed $2.5 trillion. Over the same period, the national debt will have increased 80 percent, rising from $5.8 trillion to $10.4 trillion."

Sorry to hit you with facts GW. Carry on with your flights of fantasy and spirited diatribes.

Yeah, you're right, Wease. We're better off not trying to consider new options for transportation and saving resources. Let's just let the oil companies drill and come up with that half percent of oil that will last for a few years, that should do the trick for everyone for the rest of everyone's lives.

Funny how conservative leaners make fun of dems when they talk about these things, and the only thing they can seemingly come up with is drilling for oil in places other than in all the places the oil companies already have that they don't use. You talk about a compromise and and overall view - but it rarely comes out that way when talking about specifics, now does it?

I'm for drilling in these areas (50 miles offshore or more, in the small area in ANWAR), but we've gotta look at more than that. And we certainly waste (or at least arguably waste) a ton of money for worse things than this project.

i think i can get a compromise here for Weasel. We go along with this rail system but we hire all cheap labor immigrants. Its a win win. We get the rail system and Weasel gets to see Americans watch others do the job and make the money.

Why does the debating continue?

One side will never convince the other. It is a monumental waste of time.

The rail system would be SUPERB for this country by the way & is a much better usage of funds....whoops nevermind. Fell into the trap.....

Money does not grow on trees, but the fed is printing it like newspapers. I know where we can get 12 billion a month.

Yeah, this whole car-gas-oil thing is working out really well for everyone. Only the elite will use a high speed rail system? Do you really think that? Or more likely, the elite will continue to drive their Hummers and Lexus' everywhere they want to go, while others might take advantage of a system like this?

I realize how easy it is to rip feeble minded freaks, but with a post like this, I'd be careful which side of the freak show you're representing.

With the success of Amtrak and Iraq under its belt --and 100 trillion surplus in the bank -- SuperGov is ready for the next big challenge!

If our government tried to run a Free Air system, half the population would asphyxiate in a month.
