U.S. Says 755 Arrested Linked to Mexican Drug Cartel (Update1)

Feb. 25 (Bloomberg) -- More than 750 suspects have been arrested in a 21-month investigation of Mexican drug cartels, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced today.

Holder told a news conference at the Justice Department in Washington that the crackdown against the Sinaloa drug cartel has been carried out with the cooperation of Mexican authorities.

?International drug trafficking organizations pose a sustained, serious threat,? he said. ?As the world grows smaller and international criminals step up their efforts to operate inside our borders, the Department of Justice will confront them head on to keep our communities safe.?

The drug trade from Mexico has caused an increase in violence in U.S. border areas, with authorities citing kidnappings and killings as rival cartels battle for dominance.

The U.S. investigation, called Operation Xcellerator, has netted 23 tons of Mexican narcotics, including cocaine and marijuana, that were brought into the U.S. Authorities also seized more than $59 million in drug money, the Justice Department said in a statement.

Today, 52 suspects in California, Minnesota and Maryland were arrested in the latest sweep, the department said.
