I met Red Skelton once,
he was really old, towards the
end of his life. I think it was 1997?
It was the opening of the new tower
at the Nugget in Sparks,NV. He, Jay Leno
and Wayne Newton were performing for
the grand opening and I and another bartender
poured at a High Rollers Party.
The next day I was working the service bar in the
new tower and the fire alarms inadvertently went off as well as the fire suppresion. So Red comes down in a service elevator in a wheel chair, a shell of a man. John Ascuaga is there to greet him and see WTF is going on in his 100 million dollar building, Red springs to action and goes into a routine and thrashes Ascuaga, it was one of the funniest things I had seen. After 5 mins of that Red slumps back into his chair and sinks back into his shell.
If you are ever in the Reno area, go to the Nugget, Red had performed there for over 40 years and there is priceless art by Skelton himself.
