Its Gravy,

I hear ya man about the classification of obesity as a disease. I am stuck in the middle because I am in that region. I have been big well my whole life, I just graduated with a degree in Kinesiology and going on for my grad school in Sport Administration. But I will be the first to say that I can't seem to lose weight. I love all sports and am competitive as any other dude when we play but I can't seem to get where I want too. I am not saying its a disease but if you want a test subject or wanna help someone out. I'm listening.....

And well since we are betting people, I will bet ya a flight out to Chicago and a $1000 bucks if you can help me get down to my target weight. I will do everything you say and whatever ya eat and we will see. And at worst if I see results, its a minor expense for me and better lively hood. If you interested I'm here.... wanting to make a change..... How long do you want to go for? Let me know

imo, it's already considered a disability. The great majority of my patients that are not in the hospital due to an age related ailment (heart failure, brittle broken bones, etc) are obese. Obesity is a great contributing factor to type II diabetes mellitus as well, which leads to a whole other host of diseases. I'm talking about people in the thirties and forties with big MIs and strokes. All a product of obesity, and most are already on Medicaid.

IMO, there are people who cannot help being obese (because of genetic makeup), there are people who can help being obese and overweight, and there are people who are in good/great shape.

I'll try to explain this better. A lot of people cannot help being overweight because everyone in their family has been overweight and as hard as they try their genetic makeup will not let them get down to a low weight.

There are people who are overweight and just need to lose weight in order to get to a lower weight. I see this as most common.

Also, there are those of us who are in great shape with low body fat and at our target weight.

As far as the government classifying this as a disease I don't think it should be classified that way at all. I know many overweight people who would be offended if you said they had a disease, that being obesity.

IMO that is the whole problem. Obese people are unable to admit they have a disease, when in reality they do. I'm sick and tired of people saying they can't help it. In most cases they can. And you have to realize the word obese does not mean a little overweight. It is something like a BMI of 27, a person can have a few extra pounds but obesity if a whole different ballgame.

And for everyone who says it's in their family or genetic (fill in the excuse), just look at just about every other country in the world. No one else has this problem like our country, it has to do with 1 word: laziness. Our society is just used to sitting on their butts, on the internet, at work etc. The weight loss formula is simple: eat less and exercise more. The reason why it doesn't happen is that the common American lacks discipline. Have you ever sat down at a restaurant and actually stopped to look at how much food they just sat in front of you. Do people realize it's not normal to eat a 9 oz steak, a lb of mashed potatoes, spiced apples and a blooming onion at outback. Sure, on a limited basis it's fine, but people eat like that all the time. Man wasn't meant to eat that much, it's sickening to me.

I have a few people I know who are overweight, I wouldn't consider then obeses, and they struggle with it so much. They say alcoholism is a disease, and I agree, and it is extremely hard to quit drinking if you have the disease but how do you stop eating. You know if you are hungry you are hungry. If you want to quit smoking you STOP smoking if you want to help lose weight you have to watch what you eat and I can really see that being hard. JMO
