Odds to win Super Bowl XXXVIII released
Jan. 30, 2003
LAS VEGAS ? Tampa Bay is currently atop the football world compliments of its 48-21 dismantling of Oakland in Super Bowl XXXVII. However, there are a couple teams favored ahead of the Buccaneers to win the Super Bowl next year at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas.
Oddsmakers at Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Philadelphia as a 9/2 ?chalk? to secure its first Super Bowl victory. The Eagles, who lost to Tampa Bay in the NFC Championship, are currently listed at 5/1. Philadelphia will move into Lincoln Financial Field next year after spending 31 years at Veterans Stadium.
?Philadelphia has been to the last two NFC Championship games,? stated LVSC oddsmaker Jason Been. ?The team is hungry to take the next step and is loaded with a lot of talent.?
St. Louis is an intriguing pick to win its second title in four years at 6/1. The Rams should have a couple of factors going for them heading into next season.
?St. Louis was really banged up last year,? said Been. ?The Rams did have a good stretch when they were healthy. Plus, they will have an easier schedule due to their poor record this season.?
Oakland is the highest rated AFC team at 7/1. The Raiders have a couple of key questions that will have to be addressed in the offseason. Some of their key personnel are in the final stages of their careers.
?Oakland is one of the older teams in the league, and injuries might be a concern,? noted Been. ?The Raiders have their odds because they are a public team, even with major cap issues.?
Tampa Bay entertains identical odds as the Raiders, while Pittsburgh is in the thick of things at 8/1. Green Bay, Miami and the New York Jets are also near the top at 12/1.
There is hope for teams in the middle of the pack. The last four Super Bowl winners came out of nowhere to win their first championships.
St. Louis was a 200/1 longshot in 1999-2000 to win Super Bowl XXXIV. Baltimore was 60/1 at one point en route to its Super Bowl triumph. New England shocked the world as a onetime 35/1 selection, and Tampa Bay was 8/1 earlier this season.
That begs the question, what teams if any can pull a similar feat?
?Dallas (35/1) could surprise a few people with Bill Parcells calling the shots along with its defense,? said Been. ?All the Cowboys need is a quarterback, and they can pick one up via free agency.
?Seattle (60/1) has a proven running back in Shaun Alexander, the team just needs to fine-tune its defense. Miami has a great running back in Ricky Williams and a solid defense. The biggest question mark facing the Dolphins is their coaching.?
No team has ever played a Super Bowl in their home stadium, although a few teams have come close. The Los Angeles Rams played in Super Bowl XIV at the Rose Bowl when they played at the Coliseum. San Francisco won Super Bowl XIX when the game was held at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto.
Reliant Stadium in Houston is the home of the expansion Texans. Houston and Cincinnati have the longest odds of unseating Tampa Bay as Super Bowl champions at 250/1.
