I don't understand it. Seems a stupid rule, especially on the goal T&T scored that didn't count. Any explanations for a soccer dummy like me? Thanks.

same rule in hockey, except the "last defender" is a line on the ice.

but why? That would be like basketball with no fast breaks/snowbirding? What's the reasoning?

so there's no cherry-picking and people can't just sit on the goal line. i like the rule except for the fact that it's puts too much power in the refs hands like pass interference in football.

The offside rule exists to stop goal hanging, where a player stands next to the opposing teams goal keeper in the hope that someone can get the ball to him (probably using a long ball), so he can get it past the goal keeper. Which would make for a very boring game.

It really makes very good sense.

Its not that you cant be behind a defender when recieving the ball....

When the pass is struck you cant be behind the last defender. So on long balls if you out run the defense or catch them flat footed you easily can break out....

The offsides also provides a defensive style of play for teams using the offsides trap to bog down quick strike & long ball teams.

There is no offside offence if a player receives the ball directly from:

a goal kick
a throw-in
a corner kick

Also you cant be offsides in your own end of the field & you are not called for offsides if you arent directly involved in the play.

I think it adds to the game, not take away as I am sure most Americans do as it makes the game much more tactical & adds to make the beautiful game, the beautiful game.

Still don't understand it. Should be more of a risk/reward thing. If you have a guy on the other guys goal, then your team has one less defender on the other end, right?

I guess I'll keep learning the more I watch, but this is a rule that seems silly to me. Thanks for explaining.

they should put a line in soccer. It's lame everytime some gets away for what looks like a goal, it's automatically offsides it seems like.

why not

why not

get rid of the off sides rule for the last ten minutes of each half

that would excite things up a bit

65 -- can't fully explain why (even though I am getting practice with my son on everything).

The difference between soccer and basketball is the fact that there are designated offensive and defensive players, for the most part. A striker (forward most offensive player) hardly ever drops back in defense, so they would have very little motiviation to stay in front of the last defender without the offsides rule.

There is a line in soccer as in hockey. It is the midfield line.

Also in basketball there are 100 plus points scored, so cherry picking has as much risk as reward. Cherry picking in soccer would be nearly impossible to defend due to one on ones with the goalie.

I think it is very telling how Americans, for the most part, don't appreciate soccer. We, as a society, are very much geared toward instant gratification. I also think that's why football is taking over baseball as America's past-time. There may not be as many scores in football as in basketball, but there are first downs, every catch, big tackles etc. that are all tallied by stats. Americans love stuff like that. The best baseball game used to be a 1-0 pitcher's duel. Hardly anyone gives a shit about that anymore. They want the long ball, baby.

Soccer is more about build up and finding holes to exploit in the opposing team's defense.

I predict that the US will either win or be runner-up in one of the next 4 world cups. This may not sound very bold, but say that to a European and see their reaction.

Once we start putting a winning side on the pitch, this sport will grow immensely in poplarity. Our youth programs are already becoming some of the biggest programs, so that generation will have a lot of effect on our future acceptance.

a couple of things..
Look at us "americanizing" futbal.. red line.. no offsides last ten minutes..
2nd Once onsides.. the ball is kicked cant the guy start running and essentially be offsides to get a pass???
I have been watching alot of this futbal and if a long ball is kicked they streak past the last defensive guy .. I guess assuming the ball then coukd be between himself and the keeper which is not offsides...
My 2 cents.. screw offsides get rid of it.. theres enough dudes out there to cover the field...

Typical.

Offsides is a necessary part of the game in soccer. If you've never played while growing up in America, you just simply will never understand.

Just give it a chance, six five, and enjoy it if you can, but if you don't like it, don't let the soccer elitist make you think that it's something that "you just don't get"

The reason that I enjoy it is that you've got to do about 5-6 things right (minimum) just to have the opportunity to score. It's the must frustrating game in the world and that's the reason that the emotion is so strong after a goal.

Throw into the fact that there's so many different styles in place in the world cup it's such a different game every match. The most entertaining games will be in this round, as the team's play gets tighter when it's one and done.

Keep watchin' and I hope you continue to enjoy it
