It would seem that any reasonable discussion of this contest would include a word about the Kent State coaching situation, the return to good health of Eugene Jarvis and the high sustained winds of 18 mph gusting to around 25 mph that are projected today. Skies clear, wind chill around 22 degrees.
I would expect that OU takes the Golden Flushes very, very best shot today. What more motivating fators could you ask for? Kent's Martin will be coaching his last game. Local word has it that Martin only agreed to resign only if he were allowed to coach this one last game. It's senior day in Kent ( hard to beileve but some of the Flashes are actually on cource to graduate) but that is motivation as well. The black friday crowd should be small and OU fans travel well so home field advantage will be small at best. I expect to see as much green as blue and gold in the crowd. Ticket sales were so low for this one that Kent announced that a football ticket stub will get you in free for the hoops game later.
Kent RB Eugene Jarvis is a major talent who just got his feet back under him last week after missing almost the entire season. His return makes the Kent rushing attack a viable threat today, especially when considering that the winds should limit QB Keith's tosses downfield. I really think that OU loads the box and will try to force Keith to make some plays which will probably be needed for Kent to win this game.
The Flushes do have some studs on defense and are awesome against the run (2.8 ypc). This is key because Solich wants to control this game on the ground. OU QB Boo Jackson can be a turnover machine and must avoid mistakes while making plays with both his arm and legs himself. A healthy Bates also is a big plus for the Bobcats on offense since they lost their best receiver, Brazzil awhile back.
I am holding OU -3 which I got earlier in the week and the under at 47'. I must admit that I am nervous about the side one but do feel the total is solid. I really think that this is a classic case of the team taking the best care of the ball emerging as the victors. TO's will be a huge factor.
Perhaps the best option for those not down on this yet would be to try to actually watch a first half of football to see how all these factors are playing out.
But I do expect a lot of emotion out of Kent today. I think that they keep it close for a long time with OU prevailing in the end. No doubt about it, the Bobcats are the better total package, but we all know that the best team does not always win.
Good luck however you decide to attack this one.
