Oklahoma?s No. 1, Bama No. 2 in AP poll

By RALPH D. RUSSO, AP College Football Writer 2 hours, 20 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP)?Oklahoma, where the No. 1 ranking rests again.

The Sooners sit atop the AP Top 25 on Sunday after the first upset-filled weekend of the season gave the media poll a powerful shake. Alabama was both a mover and a shaker, as the Crimson Tide rose to No. 2 after a surprising 41-30 pounding of Georgia.

Previously top-ranked Southern California lost at Oregon State to set the tone for a weekend that brought back memories of the topsy-turvy 2007 season.

On Saturday, two more top-five teams fell. Florida was stunned at home by Mississippi, 31-30. Georgia, which started the season No. 1, was down 31 points by halftime to Alabama and never recovered.

Overall, nine ranked teams lost, six to unranked foes.

The last time such a shake-up occurred? One year ago, when in the last week of September three of the top-five teams fell and seven ranked teams lost to unranked opponents.

?I think we talked (Friday) that anyone can beat anyone on any given Saturday, and that?s why you?ve got to come out and you?ve got to play on edge, full tilt every game because if not, someone?s liable to come in and beat you,? Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford said after the Sooners? 35-10 victory over TCU on Saturday.

Oklahoma is No. 1 for the 96th time in the history of the AP poll, breaking a tie with Notre Dame for the most ever. The last time the Sooners were No. 1 was 2003, when they were atop the polls all season before losing the Big 12 title game to Kansas State.

Oklahoma received 43 of a possible 65 first-place votes and 1,599 points.

Alabama?s impressive performance jumped the Tide six spots. Alabama hasn?t been ranked this high since it was No. 2 for the first eight polls of the 1993 season.

The Tide received 21 first-place votes and 1,565 points.

LSU is No. 3, moving up two spots. No. 4 Missouri, which received a first-place vote, and No. 5 Texas also moved up two places and left the top five under the control of the Big 12 (three teams) and Southeastern Conference (two).

Penn State moved up six spots to No. 6 after its 38-24 victory against Illinois.

Texas Tech was idle, but took advantage of the attrition in the top 10 to move up to No. 7. BYU is eighth, USC dropped eight spots to No. 9 and South Florida is No. 10.

Georgia and Florida each dropped eight spots. The Bulldogs are No. 11 and Florida is No. 12, followed by fellow SEC rival Auburn at 13th.

No. 14 Ohio State is followed by Utah, Kansas, Boise State and Wisconsin, which dropped nine spots after blowing a 19-point lead and losing to Michigan 27-25.

No. 19 Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech, which moved back into the rankings with 35-30 win at Nebraska, rounded out the top 20.

No. 21 Oklahoma State is ranked for the first time since 2004.

Fresno State, Oregon, Connecticut and Wake Forest, which was upset 24-17 at home by Navy, are the final five. UConn is in the rankings for the first time this season.

Clemson, Illinois, East Carolina, which lost its second straight game, and TCU all fell out of the rankings.

Couldn't disagree more with LSU being #3. I realize teams rarely get punished as long as they win, but they barely squeaked out a home win against a horrible Miss. State team.

Hell, Mizzou was idle and they probably should have leapfrogged LSU. Not to mention Texas who beat an SEC team by 42 points. If they're going to reward teams in the standings for blowing out inferior opponents, they need to punish them for laying an egg against inferior opponents as well.

I have nothing against LSU, I just don't like the current way the ranking is done. And I know LSU is a much better team than what they showed on Saturday. It just feels like they're being rewarded for playing poorly is all.

No point in discussing the AP Poll. Unless you are Pete Carroll or Scott4USC it is completely meaningless.

The polls are garbage and I really wish they had no meaning. In terms of performance Bama is most deserving of #1. But they also had a dud game against a bad team. At 4 or 5 weeks most teams havent played anybody yet, so who knows if OU, Texas or Mizzou are any good. They are given Top 5 more on potential than performance.

But Bama has as easy a schedule as you can have in the SEC, and OU simply isnt losing unless maybe to Mizzou in the Big 12 title game. They should meet each other...which of course means they wont.

Respect your knowledge of college football Sun and agree with you on most of your points. I'm not thrilled with Alabama leap frogging LSU. I really thought it would be OU-1, LSU-2 and Bama-3. Polls are meaningless as far as I'm concerned though. They are for the fans and the media. Here is Nick Saban's response last night to being asked if he was interested in being #1. "It doesn't matter where you are until the end. It's the only time it counts."

With Clemson's loss at home to Maryland yesterday, the nation sees what a fraud Tommy Bowden and his Tigers are. Alabama can't really tout the opening night win against Clemson as much... but the point is, when they played each other, Clemson was #9 and Alabama was unranked. I don't think many people are giving Tulane much credit either. I wouldn't call Tulane a bad team at all. They are the only team to date to give Alabama any type of competition.

In 100% agreement about your Big 12 teams mentioned (Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri). Their rankings are based more on potential than performance. OU has played Chattanooga, Cincinnati, Washington and TCU. Three of four games have been at home and they haven't even started conference play yet. Texas has played Florida Atlantic, UTEP, Rice and Arkansas. Again, three of four at home and no conference games. Mizzou has played Illinois, SE Missouri State, Nevada and Buffalo. Once again, three of four at home and no conference games. It will be very interesting to see how the next few weeks play out in the Big 12 (Mizzou at Texas on 10/18; Texas and Oklahoma on 10/11). I'm not flaming against the Big 12 by the way, just using the three teams you named in your previous post.

I do disagree about your comment on Alabama's schedule. Alabama has played #9 Clemson in Atlanta, then Tulane and Western Kentucky at home and had to go on the road for back to back conference games at Arkansas and #3 Georgia. Next up is 4-0 Kentucky, then an Ole Miss team that just went into Gainesville and won, not to mention road trips at Tennessee and LSU and the season ending match-up against Auburn. I don't see what's very easy about that schedule.

I said about as easy as it can be in the SEC . Different than saying its easy. Auburn and Tenn dont look like much at this point. I cant believe you dodged Vandy this year. LSU is the only concerning road game left. Frankly it should be the only concerning game at all if they bother showing up.

Nice win by the way yesterday against the Boilers. :toast:

I thought so. Wish there was some top 15 teams on the schedule to see how they're progressing, but they'll get thumped by SC, lose 1-2 to somebody they shouldn't and get "overbowled" and get thumped there too.

But I like what I'm seeing.
