Old School...help please...

Howdy OS. Man, weed city came in my new fescue yard. It's freaking horrible! I've put down pre-emergent(late it appears) and now am planning on Weed-Be-Gone when I get home. I think I'll have a yard with a bunch of dead weeds but I think there's grass under it.

Onion grass is absurd. Don't want to use Round-Up. No way to pull all of them up though.

Do you agree with pre-emergent and then the Weed-Be-Gone immediately or wait on the WBG?

Heavy rain for tomorrow predicted. Thinking I might wait on WBG?

Also, Spring fertilizer? Wait a month or 2 since pre-emergent is down?

just saw the post..


the pre will stop seed growth for a minm. of 4-5 months..or more depending on how dense the fan spin was..

if it's me I try to find a great weed killer like Comfront or similar.."WeedBGone will certainly work though...once ya run the weeds out then fert with a slow release that is best suited for your soil...any ChemLawn or that type guy out there can tell ya the ratio[16-0-8 for me in spring and summer] they are using say by late April or so..should take a couple of apps of weedkiller like Comfront or WEEDBGONE to run that crap out of it..so appox 6 weeks from now w/the fert app.


was it existing lawn or new soil and seed..that is always the tuffest to keep clean the first time thru because the fresh soil germanates every damn thing..

you can contact Scotts via the free line as well..in years past I would seek the Guru's out as well.

best to find the super tech in the area that is doing a great job for his route customers..those guys who have been in a neigboorhood for 8-10 years or so and have properties all over with rich green lawns right now are the guys who have the #'s and app's all in their head from the jump-street..just pick their brain..smart guys love sharing smart stuff..:0074

cut the lawn if you haven't already to open up the pore heads on those weeds and allow 3 or 4 days to spray the weedbgone..

the onion-grass may need a better killer..look in Lowes or Homedepot or the like for a liquid that makes a clear statement of killin' onion grass..he said either store should have a good onion grass killer...and of course they have the weedbgone if ya need some more..

the time frame you laid out sounded right to him as well..

the pre may detour any hope for new seed to fill in for ya.

hopefully the pre ya did stops any crabgrass and the like the rest of the way..

come Sept/Oct. plan on overseeding ..then Late Jan. with the first app of Pre..


here again just ask buddy..

there are 2 golf course lawn guys who's knowledge dwarfs mine who frequent MJ's too.

interested to read their responses if they see this..

Thanks very much OS. I did an entire kill so yard started basically from scratch. I kinda figured it had something to do with new fescue trying to come in as I overseeded and fertilized my neighbors yard in the Fall with an established yard and minimal weeds came in. His yard is going to look awesome in a couple of months!

I'm disappointed to see 4-5 months before the pre-emergent runs it's course( I poured it on pretty thick). That puts me at August and there's no point in trying to grow anything then as I'll be over-seeding in Oct. Oh well. Will not kill entire yard this go-round. Just spot kill that damn Bermuda grass!

I'll shoot for Wednesday to apply WBG. I also bought a weed-killer product made by Bayer. Got good reports on it. Have not heard of Comfront but will check into it.

1st app Wed but then how long before next app of WBG?

I thought I remembered waiting a couple of days for those pores to open so I'm glad I waited. Wed will be my 1st app of WBG. I mowed Sunday. Rain all day tomorrow is forecasted.

Nice to know there is a product out there to kill the onion grass! The guy at Lowe's said Round-UP but I didn't agree with that.
