On Wednesday, March 6, 2002, a Brazilian man claimed the world record for the most sit-ups.
How many did he do?
Edmar Freitas did 111,000 sit-ups in twenty-four hours. That?s a lot of sit-ups!
Freitas, a weight-training instructor, did his sit-ups on a stage in the city of Curitiba. Curitiba is the capital of Southern Parana state, and it?s a very busy city. Every hour Freitas ate an energy bar and drank a glass of coconut milk. He needed to keep up his energy and strength while performing the sit-ups. He was also allowed a five minute break every four hours so he could go to the bathroom.
Physical education students counted the sit-ups as Freitas tried to break the world record. On average, Freitas did about 77 sit-ups every minute. So not only did he do a lot, he also did them fast! Freitas had been physically training to break the record for more than a year. During that year he broke a lot of state and South American records.
Before Freitas is officially entered in the Guinness Book of World Records, a tape of his feat will be sent to officials in London. They will actually confirm that he broke the world record, which was previously held by an American. Bill Evans, the former record holder for sit-ups, was in the Guinness Book of World Records for doing 103,000 sit-ups in twenty-four hours.
