Expect to see Curtis Martin, who has just 11 yards on 8 carries this season, run a lot. Also expect to see the defensive game plan pared in half, to about 10 defenses the Jets want to master. The focus of the defense will be, not surprisingly, to stop the run, particularly because the Jets are facing the N.F.L.'s leading rusher in Ricky Williams, and because the Jets are looking to return to Edwards's fundamental philosophy of how to win games: run the ball, stop the other team's runners, create turnovers. Edwards's message to the defense: do your assignment and do it fast.
But more than anything, Edwards wanted to set a tone ? for his players and his assistant coaches ? for a game against Miami that is even more meaningful than usual, a game that has implications in the American Football Conference East and on the team's psyche.
