The drive in from Colorado (I was visiting a buddy there) was uneventful, weather excellent... Nothing like an 80 mph speed limit, and 'no services next 100 miles'

I usually take the slow scenic southern route (via Taos, Monument Valley, Grand Canyon, Oatman) but did the rare run out I-70 and I-15...

Most of the afternoon I spent at Callville Resort and Marina at Lake Mead. My buddy Rocky and his gal Stef were hired to provide the music for the annual car show out there... This impressive 1949 Mercury won 1st prize.

Rocky had a good regional career playng gigs all over Kansas and the Midwest decades ago - but he had to get out of the music business as all the easy drugs and booze and stuff was ruining his health....several years ago he started playing again, he just couldn't stay away, but this time he was able to find venues (jam nights at certain clubs) where like-minded musicians gathered and played. Right off the bat, he met Steph....

As an example of how laid back and easy going Rocky is, one of his original songs was a regional hit in the midwest. He didn't record it tho. Some dude stole it, put it out there as his own. "You pissed off, did you sue him?" No, said Rocky, "I was just glad one of my songs got a bunch of local radio play"....here he is singing about his return.

For lunch I couldn't decide if I wanted a sub or pizza. So that means I go to Cheba Hut and get the compromise, a kinda half and half of both, the toasted "Dank Sinatra" (marinara, cream cheese, salami, provolone, pepperoni, green bells, onion, mushroom, black olives, parmesan + oregano). Darn good, but I found the marinara sauce a bit too acidic, but I suppose some folks like it that way. I shook some sugar over it to cut the acidity, then it was real good!

yes, Cheba Hut is pot-themed. It is a regional chain consisting of a couple dozen outlets in Western states, started in Tempe, AZ, 1998.

Location isn't everything - but you see this first Las Vegas Cheba Hut opened next to a big weed dispensary at Sahara and Rainbow streets, a few miles west of the Strip.

You can legally buy small amounts of weed for recreational consumption in Las Vegas, but there is no place to smoke it except inside at home.

Open and public consumption of weed is not legal in Nevada. The Gov wanted to create rules for weed lounges, but numerous concerns caused the discussion among regulators here to be left to a later date. They are especially watching how Colorado is rolling out their first-in-the-nation licensing of such places.

evidently, there are still benefits to having a medical card to getting stoned

and pot entrepreneurs have even started up a local magazine

I visited a few new ones today

I had buffet at Aliante Casino, never been to that place. Way NW Las Vegas. It opened right when bad recession hit in 2008, the company (Station Casinos) went bankrupt the next year (they had a few other new properties open or expanded, were way overextended). Boyd Gaming bought it last year for half what it cost to build it in 2008!...and locals told me the buffet has suffered, not what it used to be.

but they do have a very nice sports book!

I also checked out The Lucky Dragon Casino and Motel. It was the first Las Vegas new-built casino hotel in 6 years (Cosmopolitan was previous one). Opened a year ago. Lots of gaming tables, not as many slot machines, does cater to the Asian crowd.

I signed up for the player card and they gave me $8.88 in free play. 8 is considered by the Asian gambling crowd to be a lucky number (made $12 profit off the free play in a deuces wild video poker machine).. Their phone number is (702) 889-8018...They have no sports book. But restaurants are supposed to be real good and offer late night discounts. Some time I'll be driving down Sahara Blvd late and I'll stop and grab something. They are about a block west of The Strip.

What, what? Station Casinos went bankrupt? I did not know that? I guess Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta got it back, they seem to be doing well now.......

OK, that mention of noodles got me hungry!...I just drove out to Shang Artisan Noodle on Flamingo Blvd and got this bowl of "Shang Beef Noodle" (Beef Broth, Braised Beef Brisket, Veggies) for $8.95.

As you can see, this little spot has real hand-pulled noodles.

I also got the Beef pancakes ($5.49), which are a kind of Chinese meat pie, filled with meat and hot broth. I cut the first few, then I decided to try to bite them, thinking I could control the hot broth inside. Nope! It squirted all over my shirt..

Shang Artisan Noodle is a small joint in a strip mall, seats about 35. It is bit over mile west of The Strip...Really excellent food at very reasonable price!

Now I have to look over and read about today's sports bets...I'm still adjusting to these 4pm game time starts, as I was on the East Coast and used to the 7pm starts for so long...

Lunch Thurs was Fuku Burger. This is the "Kinoko" burger - Fuku patty (marinated all beef patty with some Asian flavors mixed in like soy sauce and yuzu, but you still tasted the beef just fine), grilled shittake mushrooms, pickled red ginger, kizami shoga and finished with a wasabi mayo....real good if you like the asian/burger fusion mix. It was tasty, but I'd prefer a real basic classic beef and cheese tasting burger...

the garlic fries weren't as good or fancy as the burger:

Fuku Burger was just a food truck for some years, but they now have this brick and mortar place where Chinatown has sprawled out Jones and Desert Inn Rd

The strip mall across the parking lot has a "168 Market" for all your Asian cuisines. The hot takeout food part looks good and busy!

customers are picky about the fresh fish, so like many Asian markets, you can choose and package your own raw selections.

and plenty of so-fresh-it's-alive options, at very good prices. The small Maine lobster is only about $1.50 more a pound here than back in Maine....So no complaints about getting fresh fish in the middle of the desert anymore!

a trip out to Jerry's Nugget in North Las Vegas, check out the independent sports book lines there, one of the very few independents left...and they offer the best parlay payouts in the area.

First thing you notice driving up Las Vegas Blvd from Fremont St and Glitter Gulch is the homeless corridor along the road - tarps, blankets, old tents, grocery carts form makeshift shelters for 100 or so folks lining the fence on the sidewalk alongside Las Vegas Blvd beside Catholic Charities and HELP Las Vegas. The city of North Las Vegas is so strapped for cash they almost declared bankruptcy a few years back, and can't afford to chase off the homeless on a regular basis..

I first visited Silver Nugget tho, as new card members get anywhere from $3 to $100 free slot play. I got $5 when I put in my $20 bill. I played out the free play and made about $3 off it!...The Silver Nuggets has a small William Hill sportsbook...then I was off to the nicer Jerry's Nugget down the road.

The building you see up the street with the red roof is the famous Palomino Club - it is the only strip club in the valley with both a full alcohol bar & totally nude strippers. All other stripper clubs in Las Vegas area are limited to topless if they serve alcohol, but the old Palomino Club got their practice grandfathered in when the updated regulations came out.

the cafe at Jerry's Nugget is famous for their pies and big old fashioned desserts.

for late night snack, I went to Cheffini's Hot Dogs in Container Park, got the Panchero Dog (grilled frank, dry chorizo bits, carmelized onions, red bell pepper aioli and chimichurri sauce) $6.99 seems a lot for a hotdog, but it was so darn good! Next time I'm gonna order extra chimichurri.
