3* michigan state (-1.5) over michigan

on first glance, this looks like the perfect spot for michigan to finally exact some revenge on their rival because for the L5 years, this hasnt even been a rivalry. wolverines are scorching right now, and msu has had some bumps in the road the last month.

but this is a great spot to play izzo's guys imo. michigan has been riding this long win streak, but theyve needed 2h rallies in a handful of them. the wisconsin game at home (coming back from DD with less than 5 left). the ohio state game on the road (down 7 in the 2h). the northwestern game on the road (down 10 in the 2h). its good to see michigan show heart and not quit, but you simply cannot expect to be able to come back like that if you get down early to michigan state, but thats when izzo and the spartans are at their best. the defense can be suffocating and michigan isnt anywhere near as physical as the spartans.

also- michigan has been riding their freshman standout horton for this entire winning streak. hes become their go-to guy. theres no doubt msu's defensive schemes will be focused on completely suffocating horton and making someone else beat them- and other than blanchard- i dont think michigan has ANYONE that can do damage. i expect horton to be a non-factor honestly. izzo will not get torched by a freshman guard.

and if theres such a thing as a "statement tune-up game", msu just made it a few days ago vs penn state. even though psu was overmatched- the spartans still looked like they had something to prove, holding penn state to a ridiculous 23% from the field (11 of 47) and just 36 total points in a 70-36 win.

normally dont like to get too verbose with these write-ups. because im not a technical capper. in the end, it all comes down to who can defend and who can execute their stuff. basically, i just think msu is still far too physical and just much better fundamentally than their in-state rival. wolverines are riding a great streak- but theyre NOT dominating teams or even outplaying teams for that matter. msu should get this one.

good to hear. your opinion is well-respected. jmo, but public tends to be fickle and have a short term memory. im not saying recent play doesnt matter. it does. but at the same time- if this game was played a month ago- would people be in a rush to bet michigan in a virtual pick-em at home vs the spartans? no doubt msu has struggled of late. but this is the same team that beat kentucky IN LEXINGTON, and the wildcats are about as good as anyone in the nation right now. and spartans also lost in okie by a basket.

michigans signature win was.............ucla in pauley.
at the time, it appeared to be a great win.
boy has the luster really worn off of that one, lol.

im not discrediting michigan by any means. amakers done a hell of a job. but michigan is still outclassed here.

But Gman, look at the rest of MSU's road games! Yes they beat Kentucky and lost to OU by only a basket, but what happened at Minnesota, Purdue, and Iowa? Three road losses in a row and they were favored in two of those games. Their shooting percentage on the road has been horrible. . . shot well against Penn State, but that was at home and against, well, Penn State!

I'm sure you and I could go back and forth on this one listing points for each side from now until tipoff 11 hours away.

One more point:

You mention that the public is fickle by remembering short term results. I agree with this completely. But how can you contend that Kentucky was one of the best teams in the country back when MSU beat them? Seems to me they are playing some of the best ball NOW and not back then (I think this is what you meant, but sounds like you are using that Kentucky win and saying they beat the same Kentucky team that is playing so well right now). Do you see my point? Sure they beat Kentucky back then, but the team just wasn't playing as well and a little inconsistent with losses to Virginia at home a couple weeks before the MSU game and a blowout loss to a hot Louisville team on the road. If they play Louisville now, no question the game is much closer IMO, but short term changes in teams is nothing new when we're dealing with college players.

I think this line is a representation of what has happened in the past few years rather than what has happened THIS year. For fun, suppose Indiana had Michigan's results and was playing Michigan State at home this weekend. No question in your mind that IU would be favored right? It's all about name recognition for this particular line/game. . . MSU has dominated Michigan the past four years so they've got to be favored right? Yet given Michigans results no matter how you want to twist them around (which I do as well so I'm not saying its wrong) should lead to them being favored in this game.

Should be a hell of game no matter what. Thanks for the discussion and you do bring up several good points.

nickelback-

to your points, theres nothing more i can say besides "points very well taken"

sometimes, we (as cappers and posters) fall into the habit of trying to "one up each other" and prove disprove another cappers points.

even though im on msu and i believe its a solid play, everything you said was right on point. it would be stupid for me to try and refute some of the stuff you said.

for example, which approach does one take regarding the line:

1) michigan state is favored on name and past history alone, thus giving michigan good line value in this game.

or

2) the fact that michigan state, at 2-3 in the big 10 and losers of 5 of their last 7 games, is still favored ON THE ROAD over a michigan team that has won 12 straight. in other words, vegas is really takin a stand here and still having msu lay chalk on the road.

michigan backers would go with #1
msu backers would go with #2

you make excellent points.
at very worst, the thread is benefical as it now contains arguments both for michigan and for michigan state.

Well, we all know that michigan will crash and burn soon, Question is: Is today the day?

Don't discount the home cooking vs. a hated rival today, and the effect of the crowd on the officials. It seems to me that in order for Michigan to win. they will need to get to the line often. If the refs allow MSU to out-muscle Mich. the Spartans should prevail.

good point about getting to the line. and actually, one thing that michigan does well is shoot free throws. so the way the refs call the game will have a major impact on the outcome. msu is way more physical, so wolverines need the game called tight.

Tough one that could have gone either way.

BTW: Michigan outscored the spartans 19-5 from the FT line. Times are about to get mighty rough for the Wolvs.
