McCain drops John Mellencamp snogs when singer points out his stance

February 8, 2008
BY AMANDA LEE MYERS Associated Press

PHOENIX ? It may be ??Our Country,?? but it?s John Mellencamp?s song.

When the liberal rocker found out his songs were being played at events for Republican John McCain?s presidential campaign, Mellencamp?s publicist sent a letter that questioned the campaign?s playlist.

??Are you sure you want to use his music to promote Senator McCain?s efforts??? according to the letter sent to McCain?s campaign on Monday. ??Logic says that the facts might prove to be an embarrassment, were they to be circulated widely.??

McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers in Washington, D.C., said Thursday that the songs would no longer be played. He declined to elaborate.

The letter explained Mellencamp was a liberal who had supported Democrat John Edwards, who recently dropped out of the race.

Publicist Bob Merlis said Mellencamp told him that the situation made him uncomfortable and he couldn?t imagine McCain would want to be associated with him.

??You know, here?s a guy running around saying, ?I?m a true conservative.??? Merlis said. ??Well, if you?re such a true conservative, why are you playing songs that have a very populist pro-labor message written by a guy who would find no argument if you characterized him as left of center???

Mellencamp songs that had been played at McCain?s events included ??Our Country?? and ??Pink Houses.?? In ??Our Country,?? Mellencamp sings, ??There?s room enough here for science to live, and there?s room enough here for religion to forgive.?? In ??Pink Houses,?? he sings about a simple man who ??pays for the thrills, the bills and the pills that kill.??

His other hits include ??Jack and Diane,?? ??Hurts So Good?? and ??Small Town.?? Mellencamp is scheduled to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10 in New York.

I've often wondered if artists had to be at least consulted or if usage had to be approved before using their songs for political purposes. Seems like it should be.

I can hear it now..."I'm John Mellencamp, and I disapprove of this message..."

I don't think Fleetwood Mac wanted their song involved either but it ain't up to the artist. They do get a rights fee though.

Remember when Reagan was using Born In The USA as an Anthem until Springsteen's people told him what the song was about.:mj07:

As far as artists are concerned, the Republicans are finding out that they are limited to some country music singers, Jessica Simpson, Anita Bryant and Chuck Norris. Kinda hard to get people pumped up at a convention or rally with that crew. I mean I can only listen to Kenny Chesney for a little while. Come to think of it, not even a little while. Although I could watch Jessica Simpson bounce around stage (as long as she doesn't act or attempt to act).

wtf are you talking about?

Just focus on backward ass redneck jesus loving gay hating fly over state flag waving dipshits, i.e. your base, and leave the artist, intellectual, musicians alone. You guys don't like the "hollywood" types, and guess what, they don't like you either.

It's gotta be killing the right wing not to be able to use songs like Springsteens "Born in the USA" or Mellankamps Chevy song because those songs appear at first blush to be so pro war, pro America, pro USA can-do-no-wrong.

But once again, reality hits home, and truth hits home. These songs are great for true Americans because they point out the problems with the country and those of us who believe in a free, fair, America for all, can adopt those songs as our own. Is it any wonder why Reagen and McCain dropped the songs when the dolts got beyond the catchyness of the songs and listened to the words and their meanings?

I remember in 1988 when Bobby McFarren asked Bush 1 to stop using "Don't Worry, Be Happy" as his them song. Maybe McCain should try to bring that one back.

I remember scoring a dubbed tape of "As Nasty As They Wanna Be" when I was 11 years old. This was highly-coveted contraband on the sixth grade playgrounds. My Dad caught me listening to it one night and he was PISSED, and confiscated the tape from me. 18 years later, I can understand why.

Once in college, I tried to argue that the album should be considered protected political speech because the opening of the song "Dick Almighty" states, "They took a dick from California, transplanted that motherf*cker to Washington DC and it f*cked the nation!" I tried to persuade the T.A. that the song was actually a criticism of Reagan administration policies (Reagan having come to the White House after serving as the gov of CA), with the male genatalia symbolizing the Reagan administration, the various sex acts symbolizing adminstation policies, and the women in the song symbolizing the black community. The T.A. said, "I admire your creativity, but, um, I'm pretty sure this song is about getting laid."

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Wayne.
