Opening Day of Bowl Season

finished the regular season barely above .500, but profitable, so it's all good.

let's see if i continue my usual trend in the bowl games... start strong and finish terribly.

New Mexico Bowl

byu (-11.5) 2 units. nothing i can really add here... two teams finished the season going in opposite direction, yada yada yada. byu is probably just happy to finally not be going to the las vegas bowl. that was such a strange place for those mormons.

under (51) 1 unit. more of a gut feel than anything else. byu's defense was very good down the stretch, giving up 10 points/game the last 4 games.

so here's a question... who exactly sponsors the humanitarian bowl? a group of nice rich football fans in boise?

fresno (+1.5) 1 unit. probably closer to 1.5 units. just such a huge talent gap here. the mac is godawful bad. also, a big edge for fresno, because of their experience playing on blue turf. yes, i'm joking. i can't imagine fresno will be too fired up for their 2nd trip to boise this year, but i also don't expect NI to be too pumped up after losing the mac championship game. i'm sure they'd rather be in mobile, alabama on 1/6. two teams with questionable motivation gives me a lean on the over, but no play at this point.

this is very difficult, but i'm taking the mac team...

ohio (+2) 3 units. boo is out (well, almost definitely, the last i heard) and the line barely moved. seems awfully suspicious, unless they already knew he'd be out when they made the line. anyway, everybody is on troy, and the line's still not moving. i think ohio's run game, along with the ability to stop the run, is going to be the difference.
