I try to eat healthy but know that I dont.

Lately I have been buying organic bananas and
green apples.

They cost more but there is something I noticed.

There is definately a differant taste to them. And its a better taste to me than the regular ones.

Now what my question is, why do the regular ones taste differant ? Is it because of the pesticides or whatever ?

Scott,

I made the switch to all organic food about a year ago. I was reluctant at first, but the difference not only in taste, but my overall health is AMAZING.

I feel so much better, I won't even eat the other stuff. I just skip a meal.

Strangely, I have endured quite a bit of criticism for the switch.

Read a book or two on the subject and when you learn what you are ingesting, it will def sway you. Was a pain in Indy because Whole Foods was a 30 minute drive (past 10 Mcdonalds) and 40% higher. But here in the Republic of Boulder, everything is Organic! :00hour :00hour

Try some Organic Milk. I used to hate Milk, now I drink 1 or 2 glasses a day.

A majority of the food my wife and I eat is organic. We haven't made the switch to the bananas yet, but we'll have to try them now. Think if you peel if it shouldn't matter..ie bananas, apples.

My biggest thing is sometimes I wonder if it really is organic, or if they are putting the label on it to charge 2x as much for the same thing.

Above the Clouds....
Local news did an article on organic foods. They said if you peel it such as oranges, bananas, and other fruits and veggies you are wasting your money. I don't know but you guys said you feel that much better?

Something to consider.

I have often wondered the same thing about the free range egg and meats (and organic stuff). I think it is very strictly regulated.

Yes, of course it is. There is a whole agency dedicated to it.

They make sure those chickens run around free for a while and that makes us somehow healthier. Or more gullible. Or whatever.

I have just gotten into this organic.

The best thing I have tasted are the bananas. They almost taste like custard. Hard to explain.

Of course it probably helps that I love bananas and have eaten them every week of my life.

Also even when the organic bananas are green they can be eaten. They last longer from what I see.

Let me put it this way, would you rather drink milk from a cow that is injected with steroids and antibiotics to make it un-naturally produce milk 24 hours a day, and stand there with it's weight crushing its legs.

OR would you rather drink from one without all that shit, that produces once a day like it is supposed to, and is able to actually move a little and be happy?

If you are what you eat, ............

Just like the myth of bottled water.

My wife was insistant for years about bottled water coming from fresh streams in fawking France.

I have been telling her for years its just tap water.

When that article came out recently saying all bottled water comes from the same place as tap water. She was pissed.

She still buys it though. Woman are creatures of habit.

Oh man, don't get me started. I have been eating organic food since I was pretty young, for a variety of reasons.

As a lover of food and an avid cook, the taste difference is unbelievable. As many have pointed out, you feel a lot better since your body doesn't have to work so hard to filter out all the pesticides and nitrates etc. Pesticides and unorganic fertilizers are some of the biggest polluters of the earth - the runoff into drinking water has long been known to cause cancer and leukemia and all kinds of problems. Usually you are supporting smaller farmers rather than large corporations. I don't agree that food you have to peel is OK, since the fertilizer that these foods are absorbing for nutrients are surely still present, but I haven't done much research.

As far as bananas go, I will never eat a non-organic one. Chiquita banana (formerly United Fruit Company) is one of the MOST notorious corporations in the world. Responsible for lots of exploitative neocolonialism in several Latin American colonies. I took a whole class in college about this subject, and it was astounding the power that corporations can have over whole countries (as we are seeing more and more in America today). And the taste difference in bananas is one of the most extreme.

As far as meat and dairy, I was vegan for many years mainly to protest the way that these animals are treated. I never liked the taste of milk growing up, but recently I started drinking some organic milk, mainly because I am allergic to a lot of foods and needed more calcium. I can actually handle the taste of it - it is SO much better than regular milk.

My last point would be, that so much of what we do in America is quite artificial - that is, we shop at Walmart for food that is imported fom around the world, we eat microwave meals and fast food with ingredients that have unpronouncable names...it's not "real" food. I like to think that the reason my great-grandma lived to be 100 years old is because she ate quite naturally. Organic food is more natural, because there are not all the additives that our body needs to deal with.

You are what you eat.

Sorry, I started and I guess I couldn't stop...

I know a little bit about organic farming. I have friends in Saskatchewan that grow organic flax.

To be organic, they can't use herbicide, pesticide, or commercial fertilizer. They do have a manure attachment that looks like a corkscrew that they spread their cattle dung with onto the organic fields. Their crop yield is almost 30% less or more, but they can sell it for so much more, and they aren't out the chemical costs.

The apples from the trees in my backyard are organic because I don't spray them.

I think it's mostly hocus pocus to make people pay more, but I'll give it some credence now since you guys think the food tastes differently.
