Trembley option picked up
By Roch Kubatko on October 2, 2009 5:38 PM | Permalink | Comments (7)

Andy MacPhail confirmed that manager Dave Trembley's option will be picked up next season.

MacPhail said the club will be judged more on wins and losses next season. He had several conversations with owner Peter Angelos, the most recent today.

The front office is satisfied with the way Trembley nurtured the young talent, but MacPhail said the focus next year will shift to the present rather than the future.

Trembley comments on his return

Manager Dave Trembley was instructed to meet with Andy MacPhail at 3:30 p.m. today, which made for an uncomfortable walk to the third floor of the warehouse.

"I thought I was walking the Green Mile," Trembley joked.

Trembley could relax now, knowing the Orioles were picking up his option for 2010. MacPhail, president of baseball operations, made the announcement two hours after passing along his decision to Trembley.

"It has been a very, very emotional day for me and for the Baltimore Orioles," Trembley said. "It's been a difficult last couple weeks for everybody, but if you take those last couple weeks aside, what we said we were going to do, we did. And I'm very appreciative and thankful for the opportunity that I've gotten and for the opportunity to go forward. And I understand very clearly what it's all about.

"We're kind of graduating our players right now. We had a lot of first-year players, and I use the term that we had a lot of true freshmen here, and they got better. They got better. Guys improved. Now it's our job to make sure we go to the next step, and the next step for us is to put the best team on the field and do whatever we can each and every game to win."

We knew an announcement was coming when two microphones were set up in the interview room. MacPhail was wearing a suit as he walked out of Trembley's office. Greg Bader, director of communications, stood outside the clubhouse.

Once Trembley flashed a smile as he took a seat beside MacPhail, his return was confirmed. No words were necessary, though plenty of them flowed during a 22-minute news conference.

"I can't tell you how grateful I am and how happy I am," Trembley said. "I'm happy for a lot of people. I'm happy for the philosophy that's existed here since I came on board, and that's do things right, be honest, be fair, understand that the big picture's not yourself, but the Baltimore Orioles. And to me that makes it all worthwhile to get the opportunity to go forward."

Trembley said decisions regarding his coaching staff will be made within a week or so after the season.

Some player thoughts on Trembley

As O's fans await word on whether Dave Trembley will return as manager, a couple of O's pitchers hope he returns. One is a veteran, another a rookie.

"Every manager is a leader and someone that sets a tone," Jeremy Guthrie said. "He gets a team through the tough times. He's done a tremendous job, Dave cares about us and first and foremost, as a player, that's what you have to have.

"You can build off of that. To me, Dave means even more. When I was released by the Indians, he and a few others made phone calls for the O's to take a chance on me.

"Being with Dave, he's probably given me more slack and rope than some other pitchers over these three years. Some times I've earned that and other times I've failed in that regard.

"Manager is an important role. Sometimes they take too much of the blame. As he's gone through these struggles, he's hurt for himself, but he's hurt because the team struggled."

Rookie Chris Tillman had some thoughts on the skipper.

"He's been unbelievable for the young guys. His main thing is making us more comfortable. He did a great job with that. He always wants to make it easier on us. He's been great with the younger players.

"He's very approachable, with some guys you can be a little intimidated. My first spring here, he made a point to say it's about being comfortable here. I have no problem going up to him with any question whatsoever."
