Orlando at Cleveland, Game 5

The Cleveland Cavaliers will be staring elimination in the face Thursday when they play host to Orlando in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals at Quicken Loans Arena. Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Mike Brown?s team as an eight-point favorite with a total of 191.

As of early Wednesday night, most sports books had Cleveland (75-19 straight up, 57-36-1 against the spread) as a 7 ?-point ?chalk? with the total adjusted to 190. Bettors can back the Magic to win outright for a plus-300 return (risk $100 to win $300).

Stan Van Gundy?s squad took a 3-1 series lead thanks to Tuesday?s 116-114 overtime win as a one-point home underdog. Dwight Howard took over in the extra session, scoring 10 of his 27 points. The fifth-year center also pulled down 14 rebounds to go with four assists and three blocked shots.

Nevertheless, the Cavs had a chance to win at the buzzer but unlike in Game 2, LeBron James? 3-pointer at the horn was off the mark. James put forth a valiant effort in defeat, finishing with 44 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. He forced OT by draining a pair of free throws with 0.5 seconds remaining in regulation.

On the ensuing possession, the Magic attempted a lob to Howard who was well defended by Anderson Varejao. The home crowd wanted a whistle on Varejao, but I thought it was an excellent no-call.

Orlando (70-29 SU, 59-39-1 ATS) has now covered the number in nine consecutive head-to-head meetings against the Cavs. Howard and Co. have also taken the cash in six straight games dating back to the Boston series.

Cleveland continues to have all sorts of problems defending Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu. Lewis had 17 points in Game 4, while Turkoglu produced 15 points, eight assists and seven boards.

Rafer Alston erupted for 26 points Tuesday, knocking down 6-of-12 attempts from 3-point land. As a team, the Magic hit 17 treys on 44 shots from beyond the arc (44.7%).

Mickael Pietrus was once again Orlando?s unsung hero in Game 4. He had 17 points and made James work for everything. In fact, Pietrus should get much of the credit for forcing James into eight turnovers, several of which came in the final stanza and OT.

Mo Williams ?guaranteed? a Cavs? victory, but he was just 5-for-15 from the floor. Williams had 18 points and just two assists. Delonte West was extremely steady in Game 4, tallying 17 points and seven assists without committing a turnover.

Mike Brown?s team returns home where it has enjoyed a ton of success this year. The Cavs are 44-3 SU and 32-15 ATS at Quicken Loans. As for the Magic, it has compiled a 32-18 SU record and a 31-18-1 spread mark.

The ?under? is 52-41-1 overall for the Cavs, 26-20-1 in their home games. The ?under? is 56-43 overall for the Magic, 25-25 in its road assignments. However, the ?over? has hit at a 3-1 clip in this series and is 4-1 in the last five head-to-head meetings between these clubs.

Tip-off on TNT is scheduled for 8:35 p.m. Eastern.

--For gamblers that wagered on Orlando to win the East finals in five games at BoDog, a ticket at 40/1 odds could be cashed if the Magic can prevail in Game 5.

--Dating back to 1947, NBA teams with a 3-1 series lead have prevailed 182 times in 190 chances.

--It remains to be seen what Cleveland will do in the rest of this series. However, if I?m a Cavs? fan, I like the tone of my leader in the post-game presser after Game 4. James had a look of utter determination and zero fear. He said, "I know I am looking forward to the challenge. I'll be ready." There?s no doubt that with James, Cleveland has the potential to become the ninth team to rally from a 3-1 series deficit.

--The Lakers took a 3-2 series advantage in the West finals by capturing a 103-94 victory over Denver in Wednesday's Game 5. They covered the spread as six-point favorites, while the 197 combined points dipped 'under' the 209 1/2-point total.

--LVSC opened Denver as a five-point home favorite for Friday's Game 6 at Pepsi Center. The total was 207 1/2 on the send-out.

--Denver was in control of the game until missing 11 straight shots at one point in the second half, when it shot just 29 percent from the field. But a 6-0 run pulled the Nuggets to within four at 91-87 with 4:29 left. That's when the game turned after a terrific defensive possession for Denver ended on a terrible call. Pau Gasol clearly put his head down and buried his elbow into Nene, who had beaten Gasol to the spot and took a charge that was inexplicably called a block. It was Nene's sixth foul and resulted in a pair of free throws from Gasol.

(3) Orlando Magic (3-1) at (1) Cleveland Cavaliers (1-3), 8:30 p.m.

Just over a week ago the Cleveland Cavaliers were flying high.

Coming off consecutive sweeps of Detroit and Atlanta, it wasn't a question of 'would the Cavs beat Orlando?', it was when.

Eight days later, top-seeded Cleveland will be fighting for its playoff life and trying to avoid elimination at the hands of the Magic in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals at Quicken Loans Arena.

Orlando moved one victory from its second trip to the NBA Finals on Tuesday, this time surviving a miss from league MVP LeBron James at the final buzzer in overtime.

In NBA postseason history, teams with a 3-1 series lead have advanced to the next round 95.8 percent of the time, an imposing a 182-8 series record. Perhaps, more troubling for the Cavaliers is that the Magic have won 10 of the past 14 meetings between the teams.

Dwight Howard scored 10 of his 27 points in the extra session, pulled down 14 rebounds and the Magic held on for a 116-114 win over the Cavaliers in Game 4.

"I think as a team we want it more than any other year that I have been here," said Howard. "I have been talking about winning a championship since I have been here. But I think this is the first year that everybody is locked in on our goal."

James totaled 44 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists, but also accounted for eight of Cleveland's 14 turnovers, seven of those in the fourth quarter and overtime. Mo Williams, who guaranteed Cleveland would win Game 4 and the series, scored 18 but was just 5-of-15 from the floor, and Delonte West chipped in 17 in defeat.

"Our backs are against the wall," said Williams. "We are going to have a lay it all out on the line type of attitude and game. We will be competitive and go down with a fight. We feel like the series is not over."

James, who won Game 2 with a miraculous long-distance shot at the buzzer, had a chance to repeat the feat, but he came up empty in the end. He hit a quick three-pointer with 4.1 seconds remaining, pulling the Cavs within 115-114, but Rashard Lewis was then fouled with 3.2 seconds left and missed the first foul shot before sinking the second.

James received the ensuing inbounds pass in the backcourt, dribbled to the left side and launched a long three-pointer that missed to the left of the basket.

"I always feel like I can make any shot that I take," said James. "As it traveled, it didn't look good. It felt good leaving my hand but didn't look good in the air. Those are the breaks we have gotten this series. It just didn't go."

It was the third game of the series decided on the final possession, and this time the Magic, thanks in part to 17 made three-pointers, most off the high pick and roll, moved to a 3-1 lead.

"We can't be satisfied about winning this game," said Lewis. "It is a good win for us. We're up 3-1, but you can't relax. Anything can happen. We've got to go to Cleveland looking to try to close these guys out."

Rafer Alston added a career playoff-high 26 points and hit a clutch three- pointer near the end of regulation for the Magic, who were swept by Houston in their lone trip to the league finals in 1995.

Lewis scored 17, while Hedo Turkoglu ended with 15 points, seven boards and eight assists. Mickael Pietrus netted 17 for Orlando, which went 17-of-38 from beyond the arc.

Despite another powerful performance, Howard received his sixth technical foul of the playoffs during the game but got a break on Wednesday when the NBA rescinded the original call. Once a player reaches seven technicals in the postseason, he faces an automatic one-game suspension.

"I was playing with emotion," said Howard, who now has some breathing room with five technicals. "I might have to really use some duct tape."

James, who is averaging a gaudy 42.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 7.3 assists in the series, needs help from his teammates but hasn't lost his swagger.

"I'm up for the challenge," James said. "I think my play, my leadership has spoke for that. So I will be ready, and I think our guys will be ready also."

Meanwhile, Cavs coach Mike Brown is taking the glass is half-full approach.

"This is about as even of a series as you can ask for," the reigning coach of the year said. "They've just made one or two plays down the stretch more than us. But I still feel the confidence, I still feel the togetherness and I still feel like we have a chance to win this."

Game 6 in the series, if necessary is scheduled for Saturday back in Orlando.

Heavy action on Magic in Game 5

Orlando Magic at Cleveland Cavaliers

Line/Total: We opened the Cavs 7.5 and so far all the early money is on the Magic. About 75 percent of the money is on the dog +7.5. We're also seeing significant action on the Magic moneyline at +320. As for the total, we're booking money on the over so far. About 85 percent of the action has been bet on the over.

Series Price: The Magic are -260 favorites to finish off the Cavs in this series on that they hold a big 3-1 lead. They're one game away from their first NBA Finals appearance since 1995.

Prop of the Game: LeBron James (Cavs) Total Points+Assists 42.5

Comments: This series has been unbelievably competitive, with three of the four games coming down to the last possession. The Cavs have come up short in two of those three games and find themselves in a big hole vs. the Magic. The Magic are 7-2 vs. the Cavs in the past three regular seasons, including a 2-1 mark this regular season. Should we be that surprised that the Magic now lead this series 3-1? The Magic still have to get by their toughest challenge, winning the clinching Game 4 against a desperate Cavs club.
