I know that there is still some games left to be played, but IMO this Oklahoma team may be the best college football team ever. I am 28 so I haven't been around too long, but have seen some great teams, but nothing can match these guys from what I have seen. Would like to get feedback from some others that may have a different perspective.

I could think of a few teams that would beat them or give them a solid game, Osborne's title run at Neb had some outstanding defnesive teams. The year Tenn won the National title they had a similiar balance as Okie on offense and defense, there are numerous others such as pick any of the Hurricane Nat Title teams or even FSU.

Several come to mind, and I'm not in my 20's, I agree a couple of the Neb. teams were outstanding, heard of Johnny Rogers, they hammered My Bama team that year, they were great. But I must make mention of the Alabama 1992 team, ask Miami. Just my opinion.

the 1995 Nebraska team that beat Spurrier's Gators 62-24 deserves serious consideration--starting 11 on defense might be the most athletic to ever step on a field--secondary was best ever at nebraska, and all have played or are playing in the nfl--michael booker, mike minter, eric warfield, eric stokes, jamel williams--throw in terrell farley, an amazing athlete who somehow managed to blow his shot at the league--then to the real horses, the d line--jason and christian peter, two of the nastiest tackles to play college football--and the ends, mike rucker, jared tomich, and grant wistrom--unbelievable

:D

Great team, but as always their legacy will be determined by the bowl game. Would have been nice to see them play a decent team on the road this year.

Make Your Case, I'll spot you Top 50 All Time

Make Your Case, I'll spot you Top 50 All Time

Shouldn't we wait to see if they are the best team this year? What do you think the line is going to be if it's OU vs USC? I'd say that it will open around 9 and ease up until game day. What? Maybe close at 10 - 10'? That's not much confidence in the best team of all time. I guarantee I'll be looking to put something on the ML for USC. Their schedule was okay, considering how wimpy schedules these days go, but middle of the road at best. They really only played 1 good team, and who thought Mack Brown was going to get his first big Texas win against OU?

Are they good? Oh yeah. I'll look to put money on USC on the ML, but it won't be as much as I put down the minute the line posts on OU minus the points. If you want to say they are great, I won't argue, because greatness always tends to shift with today's darling. On the other hand, if you want to say that they are in the top 25 teams of all time, you are going to have to provide a lot of indepth comparisons with a number of Michigan, Notre Dame, Alabama, Miami, FSU, USC, Nebraska teams, not to mention past OU teams and a whole bunch of one year wonders. They may or may not make top 25.

Pretty close USC would be +8
and LSU would be +12

The best college football team ever was the 1972 USC football team. That year, many people thought they would beat a bad Pro Football team. NOT CONTEND! Never before 1972 did they think a college team could be mentioned like an NFL team. I think they had 6 1st rounders on that team and many went in the NFL.

"Keith Jackson, who's forgotten more about college football than we'll ever know, said the '72 Trojans were the best ever."

11-0 season, and blew out everyone. Closest game was a 9pt win against Stanford. USC also "never" trailed in the 2nd half the whole year. Remember, this was 1972!

That 1972 team was the first team in college football history to recieve "unanimous" votes from both polls. HUGE HUGE DEAL IN 1972! Got every single first place vote.

Beat a top 5 WOODY HAYES OHIO ST. team 42-17 in Rose Bowl.

In that Rose Bowl game, USC was near the goal line, and head coach McKay whistled his FB Sam Bam Cunningham, pulled him by the jersey with one hand on sideline, then other hand waved back and forth towards across the field to Woody Hayes, then he motioned OVER THE TOP with his hand. Sent out Cunningham, and Cunningham went over the top and scored a TD. McKay was telling Hayes the play, and said STOP IT!

That was classic!

FIGHT ON!!!!!!!!!!!

Whoa Nelly! Don't Bring Keith Jackson Into This.

Scott4USC,

I think you have a Top 5er here, for sure, but there are a few problems:

1. USC's schedule in 1972 was the usual inbred PAC-8 powderpuff. No Top 10 teams, no Top 20 teams from out of conference, except Notre Dame, of course. Notre Dame, from the 1960's through the mid-90's was consistently ranked a full cohort above where their record/schedule would indicate (14 AP and 12 UPI in 1972). Any other 8-3 school with ND's difficulty of schedule that year would have unranked, nonetheless, they were ranked pretty high when USC whipped them, then fell after the USC and Nebraska losses.

2. Ohio State wasn't a Top 5 team. Well, I guess they were, kind of. They finished 9 (AP) and 3 (UPI), but remember, UPI came out before the bowls and AP after. The UPI rankings don't reflect the bowl loss. I will also say the the UPI polls in those days were notorious for conference loyalty amongst the voting coaches. The Big 10 was sucking wind that year, so Ohio State and Michigan, the only two teams they could vote for with a straight face got ALL of their votes.

3. The 1972 Trojans produced quite unexpected success, improving dramatically over the poor 71 squad. 1970-1971 were dark years, and I suspect that most of the football world, especially Keith Jackson (who I believe lives in California - when he "retired", he agreed to continue to do certain California games like USC/UCLA and the Rose Bowl), were relieved to see them return to glory. This MIGHT have lead to overenthusiastic voting on the left coast.

Just my thoughts on what might tarnish them just enough to avoid the top spot. My vote for best all time? I don't know, maybe the 1972 Trojans?

Do you think I care if you think I am an ass?

What I type is not far from the truth. Those that think I am a homer I take that as a compliment to me and the University of Southern California. It means USC is back, and the truth scares people.

I suppose so! From "possibly the best team ever", to a disputed spot in the national championship game, to finishing #3 for the year.

I guess the big 12 is far from the big boys that they used to be huh?!!

Just glad an SEC team got a share as playing in that strong of a conference with a championship game makes a big difference.
