PAST STARS...

Peter Press Maravich

(June 22, 1947 ? January 5, 1988), nicknamed "Pistol Pete", was an American basketball player. He was born in Pennsylvania. Maravich starred in college at Louisiana State University (LSU) and for three NBA teams. He is still the all-time leading NCAA Division I scorer with 3,667 points scored and an average of 44.2 points per game.[1] He accomplished this without the benefit of a three-point line and despite the fact that NCAA rules prohibited him from playing on the varsity team as a freshman.

Years later former LSU head basketball coach Dale Brown charted every college game Maravich played, taking into consideration all shots he took. The coach calculated that at the NCAA rule of a three-point line at 19-foot, 9-inches from the rim, Maravich would have averaged thirteen 3-point scores per game, which would have given the player a career average of 57 points per game.[citation needed]

Maravich died suddenly at age 40 as a consequence of a previously undetected congenital heart defect. His last words, spoken less than a minute before he was stricken and died, were "I feel great."

Old School, Pete was Pete. Press was his father. To get Pete, LSU made Press their coach. People don't realize that there was another player on that team that ave 25 points a game. Don't remember his whole name but I believe it was "Apple" White, the center who got all the passes from Pete when they triple and quardroupled Pete. CM Newton one of the SEC coaches said that no one player could beat his team. He put his best defensive player on Pete and singled teamed him. CM laughs about it now. Pete 63, Ala 61.

I started to mention this earlier. For this thread to work for us, nobody can post if they are only tailing others on the thread. However, if they are doing a consensus of player from all over the net, that will help.

Good luck to all of us

==== gsp ........

==== At the age of 61, I remember Pistol Pete with CLARITY .........

The players' nickname was "APPLE" Sanders ........ they also had a forward that may have averaged double figures (I'm tooooooo lazy to check) by the nickname of "FIG" Newton ..............

Rupp would concentrate on defending the "other" four starters, let Pete get "HIS" and win by 20 !!!!

Issel and Pratt had little problem taking LSU to the woodshed in those days .............

What I remember most, is the fact that PETE could pull off what COUSY could do, only better, and had moves that the black players HADN'T seen before !!!

He was SPECIAL !!!

Congrats to old school for being an inovator with his posts ..........

Thanks,
